opinels are sweet......

been carrying my #7 since early july when i got it. love it. gets nice and sharp, very light knife to carry in the pocket. i am constantly checking to make sure it is still there.

i like slipjoints because i don't need a lock for most of my tasks, but there have been a couple of times when i was glad i had it (destroying cardboard boxes interestingly enough. pulling out, blade getting stuck, would have been enough force to close the blade on my hand)

Not to butt-in, but I'm putting an order together for Ragnar. I'm not sure if I should get the 7 or 8? Looks like we have one of each so far. Anybody have any thoughts on which to get? I'm thinking 7 as I plan on getting several wooden handled Moras to serve as my "big" knife.

What makes them so sweet?

I just sharpened my no. 7 on my 1000/8000 norton waterstones and it's AMAZINGLY sharp. WOW!

We'll see how it holds up, but it takes a great edge.

I've been carrying my number 7 for a couple of weeks now, and loving it. I carry it allong with a couple of Spydercos, and it's been seeing a lot more use than either my Delica Or Dragonfly. I can whip out the Waved Delica, cut a couple of straps or whatever and slip it back into my pocket all one handed and as quick as lightning, but sometimes it's nice to slow down and enjoy the act of using a knife and the Opinel had a very high enjoyment factor. And that thin blade cuts like a scalpel.

I've got a #8 I use only for food when there's no knives around. Nice classic knife.

Ive carried #10 since I got married , its small enough I can hide it ( closed ) in my hand , but big enough to be useful for me .

They are a serious little folder , mines skinned more than a few goats , and doest its fair share of kitchen duty when we are camping , including opening green coconuts , I know it doesnt have the same flashy effect as does hacking a chunk out with a machete , but itll cut a plug out , makes for a good drink , then itll slice it in halfs , husk and all , no worries .

THe only problem I ever had was I rolled the edge a few time ( but it peens out OK ) and I butchered the point being brutal to shellfish ...

they DO swell up in humid weather , but thats not a big deal

My wife has carried a little #8 on her belt since 4 years ago , in a neato Opinel pouch with the itty bitty sharpening steel that comes with it

she seriously cares for hers tho , mine looks kinda sad n sorry n well used :)

I like the thin sharp carbon used on the opinels. I have been considering getting the larger one to try out.

why are they sweet... theyare light as a feather take a wicked edge and sharpen easily...they have a classic look, and do about99 percent of what you'd want a knife to do.....the only down side is that the points are paper thin and bend if pressured it'd be sweet to have one in carbon with a spear point (like the garden knife) I don't have one of these but supposedly they are now made of sandvik likethe stainless moras

I've got a #7 that is a great slicer, takes a wicked edge with just sand paper. Also light enough that it's no big deal to keep hidden away in a pack. They are definitely more limited to just slicing compared to other heartier folders, but they do it so well!

I've been wanting to try out their saw a lot, looks like a handy size. It's hard to do, though, since my Vic Farmer already has a good little saw on it.

I have a no8 inox in my survival kit, as i like the facts that it locks well, costs a little, always liked them.

mine had a light sharpened tip, tryed to sharpen it on a stone, better now, any suggestion to make it sharper? cannot see the sharpened edge on mine (almost), 20 degree angle is ok?
i mean it seems to be easier to sharpen it than it really is...

thanks

opinels have a convex micro-bevel so thaey sharpen best by stopping on sandpaper stretched over soft backing like a mousebad or a piece of leather

OH! good to know,
never used sandpaper to sharpen, so a stone or a ceramic V sharpener (gerber like) are not good right?

will search for threads about sand paper sharpening.

thanks!
Maxx

the points are paper thin and bend if pressured
Better to bend than to break, yes?
I love my #10. It's a great food knife, seeing tons of use in my kitchen at home, and *always* coming with me when I'm eating/preparing food outdoors.

Great carbon steel. Very lightweight knife. Simple mechanism. Fun to mod! Nice and cheap!!!!

All around winner. Get several.

The filet knife is my favorite filet knife, and I love the saw too!

mad max if you do a forum search on sharpening a convex grind you should get all the info you need....you can shapen them with a stone but you'll lose the convex bevel (which is nice to have) if sharpening on a stone it should be kept almost completely flat

Opinels are sweet. :D

Here's one o' mine.

I've a No8 that I've used off and on for the last 40 years for camping or EDC (still locks up tight). They are just so light weight and handy, it either goes in my vest or jacket. This is in addition to my SAK in my pants pocket. I like the lock down feature and the handle just feels right. I don't think the No8 is too big.
