These are some of the new blades I`ve been working on, and I need your opinion if you think the two smaller ones have a practical use in the woods. Both are about 5" long, with a 2" cutting edge, 3/32" thick. The bigger one is just there to show a different handle shape I`m thinking of using. Your thoughts?

I think the small drop point would be perfect for the woods! I'm not a fan of wharncliff's so I can't comment on the that one, but I do like the drop point one. It has a great blade shape that looks like it'll be useful for just about everything, and a nice comfy handle to give lots of control.

If I had the money I'd really be interested in something like that. Good work.
 
Those look great, John! Good work. I know lots of folks will be interested that wharnie. I'm likin' that big guy though!
 
The 2nd one is just like my kit knife from you except it has a 2.5" blade. I take it everywhere I go.

First, I love the big one. The handle shape really does it for me.

As for the little ones, I'm into the wharncliffe, which, depending on the grind, could be great for whittling fuzz sticks, food prep, and such. It would also make a nice wilderness / city hybrid knife, I think.

The middle one looks great too.

I've always liked wharncliffe blades for food prep because I learned on a chinese cleaver and I'm used to the straight edge. For slicing up camp food, I would think 2" may be a little short, but doable. Being that small, however, makes it a great blade to use. You wrap three fingers around the handle, and then rest your index finger down the spine of the blade. Like... you have a really sharp finger nail, sort of.

I dig the middle blade. It looks like it'd be a good edc. It's short, but a useful profile. A lot of people seem to be migrating to smaller and smaller blades. Actually, you give me both the top one and either of the middle ones and I'd be quite happy.
 
I`m liking how the handle feels on the bigger one, which by the way is 3/16" thick. I thought I`d try something different. Thanks for the replies.

I like the big one too, thought you just wanted ideas on the small ones.

I read your description more. A 2" blade isn't something I would carry/purchase. 3" is about as small as I like to go for my "small" knife.

You should make a chinese cleaver. That would be awesome. Big 'ol rectangle of 1/8" steel.


Make me one of these at a reasonable price and we're talking! I'd probably be the only one you'd ever sell though :D

I'm not a fan of wharncliff blades, but the part I like about the bottom one is that it has a nice point. The front isn't as blunt as many I've seen. The fine point would make it useful in getting into small spaces and perhaps drilling if you would need to.

Also, I really like the two-tone handle. Cool combo!

The two tone one is black and brown micarta, I`ve only done two like that. This is the other one.

that middle knife is a great looking blade. looks like it would do anything one would ever want a small fixed blade to do, and then some more. the new handle style on the big one is nice, but i am not sure that i would prefer it to some of your other handle designs.
 
I absolutely love that bullet nose drop point large blade!!! :D:D:D:cool: It's hard for me to get beyond looking at that one!!!

For the two smaller - the drop point.

The wharni looks a little wide for the short blade length, IMO.

Now, back to the large bullet nose drop point - when can I get that one? What are my choice in scales? :D
 
I know it's a little off topic but I think there is a gap in the market for small blades with full length handles.
 
Nice John, those are great! I'm really like the larger on and the little drop point. The wharnie looks a little tall to me, but I bet a set of scales would take care of that. Excellent job!
