Opinions of makers who've made knives according to your needs and specs

I've had great luck with Leif Lambertson and of course Todd Davison. Both of them have nailed it perfect on knives that I've had specifically made for me. Leif is a member here on the forum and built me a spectacular hunting knife. Davison....well he of course was able to take my specs and build me a great folder.

Jared Oeser, Tobin Smith, David Farmer, Jason Wilder, Tapio Syrjala, Laci Szabo, Shannon Carter, and more than I can remember at the moment. I have been pretty lucky. These days I only buy from a couple of people and generally don't ask for anything, I just buy what I like and pass on the rest.

Those are two beautiful knives. Congrats to both of the makers.

My second experience was Garrison Knives (member gimmejr). I ordered 2 knives from this member after I had more knowledge of knives and could appreciate what I had. Great to deal with. Very quick turn around, and a real pleasure to deal with. One knife was a wedding gift and it is a BEAUTIFUL piece of work. Fit and finish is absolutely beautiful.

It would sure depend on what type of knife you want made. And your budget. I wouldn't think that if you wanted a nice, petite folder then Garrison Knives would not be who you would need to contact(I could be wrong). But for a big chopper, hunting knife, camp knife etc. he will make you a great knife for a fantastic value. A value that you won't believe. I think he sends out his H/T(Peters?) and it is spot on. He uses simple carbon steels(01, 1095 etc.) but I have a small kitchen knife he made out of, I think, AEB-L.

I'm a fan.:D

Tobin Smith & JK knives - these two gentlemen will take a drawing and turn it into steel and materials to your specs.

I have had quite a few makers make knives, usually of their own design or well established designs, to my specs. For instance, I've only had a few knives made by Scott Gossman, of my own design, I had no clue what I needed, only what I wanted. He still took my design and made a great knife. He also made a 3.5" bladed Kephart, with a slightly bigger handle, for an EDC blade. Other knives, he has made some for me with thicker or bigger handles, or variations on blade lengths. He doesn't take custom orders anymore though. I know what I want in a knife from him, and 99% of his blades fit my huge paws. Out of how many knives I have from him, only a few get really hard used, and they tend to be the smaller EDC/pocket blades.

I have ordered slipjoints from J Oeser, Dr T, Tracy LaRock, Gene Wiseman and I may be forgetting others. They used established patterns, Zulu for J and Doc, dogleg jack for Tracy and barlow from Gene. They used handle material I preferred, but the designs they used were already out there in the market.

Most makers are finding out that they need to stick with well established patterns. Whether their own or someone else's. I have traded into or bought second hand one offs from makers on the secondary market, and found it is very hard to trade or sell these knives. Well make knives, but not everyone is interested in them.

Many slipjoint and bushcraft knife makers will make you a knife based on one of their designs, with your tweaking the design. Before Scott stopped taking custom orders and switched to a store format, I asked him for his interpretation of a pukko, or later, a Hudson Bay camp knife. Feel them out. They like to play around on their own, finding out which designs work for them. The biggest part of the fun, other than using the knife, is thinking out the design with the maker. The makers I've worked with knew their stuff, and will tell you if a certain design doesn't work.

I asked a maker,/BF member "Daado" to make me a mildly customized version of a design he put up for sale. He did exactly what I asked him to do, finished the knife very quickly and shipped it without delay all for an incredibly reasonable price.

Blade Forum member John Kiedaisch (JK Handmade Knives) Has made several knives to my specs for a very reasonable price and I have been very satisfied with them. He has a hosted knifemakers forum here on BF

I'll put a plug in for Ken Coats. Ken made this Easy Open slipjoint for me with an Ace of Spades shield. I contacted Ken to see if he could do the shield and it was no problem. Ken didn't have a die for an Ace of Spades shield so he had to make one to accommodate my needs. I asked him to put a shield on each side of the knife which also is not a common request. I wanted something a little different and Ken came through with flying colors.

I liked Ken's work so much that I immediately got on his list for another knife. This Sheepsfoot Jack was a pattern that Ken had already made in the past but his other patterns had the small blade and nail nick on the other side of the Sheepsfoot blade. This way both blades are accessible from the same side.
