opinions on 1911's

Sharp looking 1911 there, Aleko. Glad I'm not the only one out there who likes solid triggers over 3-dots.

One note of caution on the Springfields, those things come pre-sharpened from the factory! :D
I have a nice scar on my thumb from checking a barrel fit on a Stainless loaded model. Pressed down on the oily hood of the barrel and *zip* ran my thumb into the bottom of the ejection port. Mistake on my part, but many edges are sharp enough to cut paper. As I like to tinker with things, I took same said pistol (belonged to a trusting friend) and slightly broke all the edges using a smal file and stones. You can't tell it has been done unless you really look and makes the gun much more "user friendly". Kimbers don't seem to have that problem. Like I and a few others have said, look for an early Kimber or be willing to play around a little with a new SA. Trust me, a sharp edged pistol becomes a real PITA when carried alot.

m1marty is right; Springfields do come very sharp. I've had mine heavily re-worked, so I don't have that problem anymore, but when it was new, it was pretty dangerous. I sliced my hand open a couple of times on the rear Bo-Mar sight. Slide serrations were also sharp enough to shave some skin off you fingers. But, if you get a stainless model, you can easily make it more user friendly.

Great info guys, I do like the Springfields so that is what I will most likely end up with when the time comes.

m1marty,
The only carrying that will be happening is at the range :) the chances of ever getting a CCW liscence in NJ are slim and none, unless I can get a signed document from Congress or GWB something saying that I am an integrall part of national security and the safety of NJ is in my hands alone

Sorry to hear you live in one of the "occupied" states. :(
The sharp edges can still bite ya though. As Aleko can probably tell you about as well, a "Tap, Rack, Bang" malfunction drill quickly can turn into a "Tap, Rack/Cut, Drop/hopefuly no Bang" circus routine. Not trying to scare you off any particular firearm, but go look at 1911's and run your hand over every part of it. You'll see what I mean. This again is my opinion and your mileage may vary. Man, I get to ranting on this stuff. The 1911 is by far my favorite firearm and I like sharing the info and seeing new people get into them.

I bought a plain regular black Kimber "Custom" in Spring of 2000 for $602.00. This was back when Kimber had just been recognized as hot and that gun was THE GUN to get. That was when magazines were running stories about Kimber - they were so surprised that Kimber had so many "custom" features that came standard. (Later Kimber started coming out with all the fancier models.) Well, I got one of those before people started going bonkers over Kimber and they started releasing all those other models.

I never bought another 1911 or upgraded to a "tactical" one because I didn't have to.

My Kimber put them into 2" at 50 feet with it's first magazine and has been the same ever since after thousands of rounds. It has NEVER failed me and even ran with some pretty crappy reloads back when I was first starting to reload for autos using lead SWC. It even runs really well with HOT stuff.

I have a lot of guns, but that Kimber is the one I depend on to protect my home. ;)

:) Oh man, ain't that the truth... That's how I earned my scars... But now my Bo-Mar is nicely beveled and doesn't pose any danger to my hands. :p

another nice one Aleko, interesting serrations...lets see some more pics guys, show em off :)

Nice Aleko...you have too many, you should sell me one of them :D

Is the Black and OD a Wilson Combat?

Whats that thin pointy lever up by the hammer? On some of those, they look pretty pointy and I'd hate to jam my finger into one when racking the slide...

I think you may be talking about the safety.

He-he. You can never have too many 1911s. And that's not all of them, either. ;) I just need to take more pictures of the others.

There are 3 Wilsons in these pictures - black over OD green CQB, black on black Lightweight Stealth, and gray over gray Tactical Super Grade Compact.

If you're referring to thumb safety, then no, you can't really jam your finger into it since you'd have to disengage it (push the lever down) to be able to rack the slide. And when shooting, your thumb should be resting on top of it.

You say it now, but wait till you get one. I thought the same way when I bought my first one - I was looking for that best "all around, all purpose" 1911 because I thought I couldn't possibly need more than that. I proved myself wrong PDQ. They are very addictive, so you can't just have one.

My Colt Combat Commander, and a C&S Adventurer.

I do not care for Wilson's attitude, or finishes.

I understand that their gunsmithing is adequate, but their prices are a bit high for me, C&S seems to be less expensive, but they do have a painfully long wait time.

I find that RoBar makes the most consistent and long wearing finishes for my requirements. They did a nickel plate for my Colt frame, and the final product was very, very acceptable.

Best Regards,

Steven Garsson

Seems like everything that I have an interest in cost lots of $$$$$$...I need a nice cheap hobby...like knitting or something  :barf:
