opinions on 1911's

Aleko! You da man! That's some serious 1911 porn... all those are yours? Damn! I love the EB Kobra Carry. You definately deserve a hug! (in a hetero gun-lover kind of way. ;) )

Thanks. Yes, they are all mine, plus there are a few more that are sitting in either my safe, or safes of a few very talented pistolsmiths.

Well, as long as it's just that - I'm game. ;)

A few more pictures of the gun from my earlier post - it's something slightly different from what you usually see done to a 1911. It's a Springfield frame with Caspian slide, some "aftermarket" parts, etc., built by Mark Hartshorne of Pinnacle High Performance. Unfortunately, these pictures suck a little (took them a while back with an old camera, and haven't had time to re-shoot them).

Sorry for the poor pics, I will get some better ones someday.

Aleko

All that and not a single Les Baer? For shame. :D :D

One day I'll scrimp and save and be able to justify spending 2k+ on a Baer.

Nope, no Baer... yet. I've never seen a Baer that I really liked and just *had to have*. But I'm open minded enough to admit that one day I may find one that I really like. ;)

I think Aleko may be the master on this subject, but I would recommend either Kimber, Springfield or Colt, in no certain order. I would like to have the original, but the Colts cost too much etc etc etc. I am sticking to Rugers for the time being.

My above opinion is culled from what little I know about the 1911 style automatic.

Take a look at the Thunder Ranch.....the best semi-custom for the coin IMHO.
I also had a Wilson Protector Two Tone (black over stainless) BEAUTIFUL gun, but WC's customer service left me......lets just say I wasn't "EXTREMELY SATISFIED" as the ad says. Great gun though.
If you have the time, take a look at the NightHawk Customs as well. I've got to play with/shoot two guns out of that shop. Very impressive, it's almost as if some of the best 'smiths from WC started their own shop. ;)

I've played with a TRS on a couple of occasions - never warmed up to its look or feel. I don't particularly like the shape/feel of the beavertail and thumb safety (I had the same "liking issue" with Springfield, but have since replaced/modified those parts). I also don't care for Baer style slide serrations, and slim grips that come with TRS (easy fix, I know, but still). Oh, and the fact that it takes two men and a boy to field strip the darn thing.

I've never had any issues with Wilson Combat customer service, and I've had to deal with them on more than a few occasions - some minor warranty issues, as well as custom work. They have always gone out of their way to help me, treated me more than fairly, have thrown some freebies here and there, and always delivered ahead of schedule. I couldn't ask for more form any company.

As far as Nighthawk Custom goes – I've been keeping an eye on them ever since their inception. I've never handled one of their guns personally, but I have heard good things about them. I hadn’t shown much interest towards them up until very recently because IMO they were lacking "personality" and were nothing more than a Wilson wannabe (I guess I shouldn't be surprised considering where all those people came from), and you couldn't tell their guns from Wilson Combat if it weren't for rollmarks (and their logo can still be mistaken for Wilson Combat's). They didn't offer anything I hadn't already had with Wilson rollmark on it. Lately, however, they started making models that were different enough for me to take them seriously and even consider one (or more) of their guns in the future.

Yeah, a family friend has a Baer. First 1911 I ever shot. Didn't really appreciate it at the time.

Apparently you're not supposed to field strip 'em until about 500 downrange. Supposedly it stays tight longer, and customer service has a better reputation than Wilson.

Besides, I like solid triggers and standard guide rods/spring bushings.

Never had the priviledge to see/handle a STI, Wilson, Baer, or Kimber so I won't comment. Every Springfield I have ever seen has had some sort of rough, but minor defect. I've seen brand new ones that were very sharp and seen some that is was almost impossible to work the slide lock, very stiff guns. However, as many posters have already mentioned you cannot go wrong with Colt, Colt makes as fine a gun as anybody out there. Also, I haven't fired one but have handled the new Smith and Wesson SW1911, very impressive and it has features that would cost a ton more on a Colt for the cost of a basic M1991A1 in the neighborhood of 700-800 USD new, you may find pricing a bit higher or lower depending on where you are. Personally I'd go with a Colt or that new Smith, but I'm sure many of the other guns are just as good as their reputation. Personally what I'd like to add to my collection next is either a Colt XSE, Special Combat Gov't, or my personal favorite a Gold Cup, but don't overlook the basic M1991A1 GREAT GUN.
