Opinions on 8cr13mov.

For a light use edc its fine. Opening envelopes or plastic packaging etc., soft materials. If you cutting cardboard, it will quickly dull.

My CRKT Swindle is a cut once sharpen once knife. I like the knife but I won't be buying any more Xmov steel.

Same with mine and it’s a shame because it is a very cool knife. Light EDC only!!
Joe

IMO....only, for EDC it’s acceptable. For a work knife....nope.
It dulls very quickly on insulation or thick cardboard.......very quickly.

True. Light EDC is the playground for 8Cr13Mov and AUS8. Professional use requires some harder (and tougher) stuff. Benchgrinded and torchblower hardened saw blades have done some incredibly hard (and stupid, from a knifenut's point of view) jobs for me. L6 and 15N20 are still used and available from industrial and custom makers. They make for amazing knives. Just not stainless...

Strange. Back before all these "super steels" tradesmen and the working man, farmers, and others who used their knives daily just as hard as we do today (if not harder) got along just fine with plain old 1095 or one of the earlier stainless steels, and their knives lasted for decades.
Why is it that unless it is "the latest and greatest" the steel used is not any good, even though it has a track record of successful use dating back potentially (as is the case for 1095) for centuries?
Hate me if you must, but it makes no sense to me.

I will have to disagree with the crowd, I think 8cr keeps a good working edge for a reasonably amount of time. It won't keep a razor edge for long but that doesn't limit it for many of the duties those types of knives are designed for. I think the people stating "use once, sharpen once" are particular about their edge. Which is fine because we are generally knife snobs after all but the lowly steels have their place if you don't want to spend the money.

Last week, I broke down a few large cardboard shipping boxes into really small pieces with my Kershaw Skyline XL. I was surprised at how well the 8Cr13MoV held up through corrugated cardboard and packing tape. Obviously, after turning four large boxes into tiny pieces it wouldn't shave hair off your arm, but the edge was still decent enough for most edc tasks. I think it cut so well because of how thin the blade and the hollow grind are, and it was really easy to sharpen back to a razor edge.

I bought a kershaw in 8cr and sold it after a week of edc if that tells you anything, maybe I got a bad one but..... in my opinion Stick with kershaw sandvik, Ontario d2 or aus 8, Buck Paul Bos 420, or step up a few more bucks to a vg-10 spyderco.

This.

I am surorised some poster said no problem cutting cardboard. Well, if you are only going to break down one or two boxes, it should be fine. But a knife in 8cr13mov will not be easy to break down lots of boxes, some of which are for big electronics like TVs, during the Thanksgiving season. I t will get dull quickly and you will have to sharpen it in the middle.

I pass on 8cr13mov junk. There are so many better budget steel types.

Generally spyderco heat treat 8cr13mov well. Do think they had a Byrd ht'ed to 60hrc give or take. But dunno if they still run it that high

They used them probably way harder (more intensively) than we do, no question. They just sharpened their knives and tools very often and had no problem with it. They used what was available and made do.

When nothing much better was available??? Sure.
That is true with any tool.

I like 8cr13mov better than 14c28n and bd1 but guess I'm in tht minority. 14c28cn doesn't seem to hold a working edge as long, and bd1 feels about the same for more money (in Spyderco's lineup). I'll take vg10 over it any day, though I don't think an Endura is worth $25+ over a Resilience.
I found the same thing in my experience. 8cr would hold an edge just a little longer then aus8 and 12c27. And about the same amount of time as bd1.
With that said it's been a long time since ive used bd1(i couldnt sharpen as well back then) and like a good aus8 and sandvich steels more then 8cr. I could put an extremely keen edge on those with minimum effort.

To the OP, i used a Spyderco Persistance for a little over a year, everyday, in a shipping warehouse. It had to cut alot of cardboard, plastic straps, wrap off pallets, and did great. I would have to touch it up about every night though. After 2 days of that kind of use with out any sharpen/honing, it would start to struggle through everything. To the point where i was just forcing it through the material and the edge wasn't doing its job.

My Tenacious is still pretty sharp even after moderate usage, and have to say I really like that knife.
My main EDC's are still CPM-154 and S35VN though.

8cr13mov used to be just fine. I used it for many years. But now with all of the better options, I would consider other steels.

G’day I’m looking to get one of Spydercos budget line like a resilience or tenacious or a Byrd. I am just wandering if anyone has any opinions about 8cr13mov steel, I am used to vg10 on my endura and it’s great and pretty damn tough. How is the heat treatment on the 8cr13mov? Is it tough, good edge retention etc? Thanks all.

Holy cow! So M4 cuts 6 times longer than vg10 and 10 times longer than 8cr13mov?

Thanks for all the information guys I appreciate it I think I’m just going to save up and get a paramilitary 2 but I will pick up a tenacious down the road just to test it out.
