Opinions on Cold Steel

I liked the fact that CS offered stuff like swords and throwing stars and blowguns. I own the big bore blowgun and that thing performs as they claim. If you've ever bought a little crummy .40 blowgun believe me, the big bore makes that thing look like a toy. I have no doubt it's capable of small game hunting but I don't trust my own skill enough to get a clean kill and not make some poor little animal miserable until I can finish it. I know LT said he would still be offering that stuff on his own but I've yet to see a company or hear anything more. If you wanted any of that stuff now is probably the time to find and buy it. You might notice the crossbow they were selling has all but vanished from the internet- it's discontinued.

So since we are in the CS thread, let me ask whoever is more familiar with the old CS releases…
‘My first tanto Voyager was purchased from Knife Center I believe maybe 2014… I could be mistaking.
It is a AUS 8, partially serrated blade, chisel grind.
This is it:

So, all those years, communicating with bunch of knife enthusiasts here and in some other forums, I never came across a chisel grind Large Voyager.
My question to more familiar with the CS production is - do you guys know the model number of this particular knife ?
Im pretty sure this isn’t knock off even the steel isn’t marked on the blade. I purchased it from KC and I don’t think they’ll sell copies or such….

Here is the same knife, side by side with my other Large Voyager in CTX - BD1, this one is also hollow grind but with normal, two sided bevel, purchased from the same store.

Thanks to you bunch of enablers I finally decided to pull the trigger on my first cold steel. I had a few bucks worth of credit at DLT, so there's a mini tuff lite on the way. Worst case scenario I can give it to my dad or brother.

I decided to take a quick pick of a couple knives I had laying around my desk at work.

It's tough to tell, but the CP1 is almost right at the same overall length as the Combat Troodon of your don't count the glass breaker. Edge length is about the same. The Triad Lock knives need more handle length to fit all the locking mechanism in there. An OTF needs space for the springs and whatnot.

Both carry about the same weight with the CT being a big easier to draw. Still, we are taking about a knife that cost 10 fold over the CP.

The CP broke in nicely today. I flushed it with some WD40 after opening it about 200 times. Got some of the grit out. A little shot of Rem Oil and it's running pretty smooth. The AUS10 is super easy to sharpen. I took the k ife to a fine Arkansas stone then stropped it on a piece of loaded leather. Hair popping. I was way actually really surprised. It went from OK to Watch yer Fingers in less than 5 minutes.

So, a solid folder, but I still need to use the qualifier "for the price".

With some exceptions , I can't recall , most of the older Voyagers and many other models with no special steel labeled on the blade ...were AUS8A .

They all worked just fine for me , even as throwing knives . Only loosened the pivot on some with repeated abuse .

I kinda wish I'd bought a case of these back when they were way cheap and available .;)

All my knives are supposed to users , but I still cheat with a few .

I already have 3 different older Vaqueros in service .

Steel is labeled on blade , also has DLC ...sweet uber Vaquero .

Even got a signed box ! I didn't even realize I would care about that .🤪

Cold Steel #29TLTH Voyager Large Tanto Point, 50/50 Edge

So, I’m relatively new to knives, and I’ve never owned anything from Cold Steel except for some random throwing stars. From what I’ve seen, Cold Steel has some issues, and some even seem to look at it like a black sheep, but then others love it and Cold Steels are regularly bought and sold on the exchange.

What are y’all’s opinions? 🤔
Most Cold Steel (pre-sale) hate is for the founder's brash personality and his aggressive , non-apoligetic testing and proof videos .

He was hard selling , mostly weapons that were designed for hard use and usually a great value for what you paid .

He was a great salesman and sold primarily to his market base . Very successfully and for a long time .

If you hate weaponized blades and all kinds of other such martially oriented stuff , you aren't gonna love OLD CS .

Lots of competing companies and their supporters , also did not appreciate LCT directly comparing their favorite and usually much more expensive brand's models .

I you don't understand or like where LTC was coming from as a martial artist , I can understand the haters .

But the GSM buyers have no apparent understanding or interest except to bleed the brand name dry for maximum profits .

You can still buy a lot of the OLD CS , but don't wait , if you want any .

I've had an uneven relationship with Cold Steel over the years. I was put off by the over the top crazy marketing, resulting in me avoiding them for decades. Once I finally reconciled them as a company that made good knives, with great locks, I started to buy them. Now that GSM have gotten their mitts on them, after a ton of layoffs and knife designers cut adrift, I'm uncertain about what kind of a future they'll have. I've recently focused on buying some older models before they're degraded or vanish, especially ones designed by Andrew Demko, but even with a few still to get I'm taking a break from Cold Steel to pay more attention to companies that look like they're headed in the right direction. If those knives I still want aren't available when I circle back for them, then so be it. There are always plenty of knives out there to choose from and I already feel like I've been rewarding them for poor management decisions by buying as many as I have lately.
