This is my survival kit:

1 heatsheet space blanket
12 ft. of paracord
1 Fox 40 micro whistle
1 Rescueflash signal mirror
1 Mini magnesium firestarter
1 spark-lite firestarter
14 tinder-quick
1 bottle of potable aqua tablets
1 brunton mini compass
1 photon mini light
1 mini first aid kit
1 razor blade that folds into its handle
1 1qt. zip-loc bag
3ft. HD tin foil
survival instructions from Ritter pocket kit

This is all packaged in a 1/2 qt. "lock&lock" rubbermaid dish. The dish has markings on it for a 1/2 qt. to measure water to purify.

A few things to consider. I am carrying this kit while hunting and covering a lot of ground. I have tried carrying more, but I have found I am way more likely to leave the kit behind if its any bigger. I also carry a K&M matchcase loaded with 30 matches, a good fixed blade knife, a gerber telescopic saw, Fenix L1D light, two more compasses, and a 16. oz nalgene bottle with a snow peek 300 titanium mug around it.

What do you guys think? I know it lacks, but at least it will be carried. Thanks.

it looks to me like you have everything you need.

you have shelter, fire, signalling and water. depending on how you do hunting you might have food too.

and you carry it, which is what makes it really useful.

A bar of soap and a roll of toilet paper.

Ya' don't want to come down with the trots due to poor field sanitation.

+1:thumbup: I read that during war time that there were more casualties due to infections and poor fiel sanitation than bullet wounds. It is not easy to stay clean in the event of a dissaster or even in the woods on a normal dayhike but in a long term situation getting sick (diharrea comes to my mind) is something to be avoided.

I might consider a small bottle of hand sanitizer. More uses then soap itself and just as good.

Didn't see a metal cup, but a great inexpensive addition is the Olicamp cup that will nest with your Nalgene bottle. It has more uses than drinking water out of as you can boil water with it, dig with it, use it to collect berries, etc.

Looks good though!

Maybe a lil more paracord. Making cordage in the field isn't that easy and takes some time. You may even consider swapping your bootlaces with paracord. Neat trick I learned from K Estela

I second what Rock6 mentioned about a metal cup to boil with . I would swap the Nalgene for a Guyot, especially since it is a survival kit.

And then again, you could add a couple of candles. Light one inside your shelter. Great for improving morale during those dark and troubled nights.

A couple of paperback novels to pass the time. Survival situations sometimes call for staying in place for awhile so the books keep the mind active and off your troubles. (Back in the 60's the Army used to issue pocket sized copies of the Old Testament to Soldiers.)

Although not mentioned I assume you carry some food with you while hunting. Something to help you through at least a day and night outdoors.

I would add some electrical tape, great for fixing leaks or tears, and for makeshift bandages.

i wish i could find oilcamp cups but nowhere ever has them in stock around me, ive been all over but no luck finding them same with a water bottle sling for a nalgene sized bottle

instead of electrical tape pick up some of the 3m tape thats not sticky, but you stretch it out and it then sticks to itself but leaves no residue

a bottle of super glue http://www.krazyglue.com/products/product_detail.asp?pc=KG483&g=9

i carry one of these in school everyday, i use it for everything its also good for pranks and such

If it only sticks to itself you can't use it to patch stuff (clothes, sleeping bag, etc. I prefer duct tape for that as well). It will only work if you start overlapping it, so you need a lot turns arround whatever you intend to put it on. It also doesn't have too much strenght, it is designed to insulate electric wires, nothing else. It gives a hell of a grippy surface so we usually cover the whole lenght of our technical Ice axes to allow a higher grip!

This is John McCann's store. He wrote that survival kit book. I have ordered from them and was very pleased.

wouldnt hurt to rap th ewhole kit in 550. i bet it has a lip on it you could line the bottom allowing acess to the rest of the kit.

I'd increase the length of paracord to at least 10 yards. You won't even be able to make a bivy tent to shelter yourself with only 12' length.

I think 1-2 compasses are enough.

Several feet to yards of duct tape wrapped around a golf pencil. It will repair clothing and serve as field bandages. Pencil to write notes, leave messages, use as tinder, graphite as lube.

Bandanna or 2 would also be good.

Bring some more paracord, if you end up needing it I'm almost certain you'll find 12' isnt enough.
