Opinions on SOG knives! Anyone?

I only owned one SOG folder and it was horrible so I just had to make this thread. Love how many of you guys gave me your opinions though! Anyone used the SOG Tsunami? The youtuber nutnfancy calls it a "hand katana" and I just love the design so I am considering picking one up.

I have the Visionary II It's the only Sog I have but I put her up there with my Benchmades and Spyderco's.
Just wish the handle had a bit more grip.
Cheers

I generally hold a low opinion of SOG, both of the company as well as their products. I think some of their fixed blades and folders are very nice, but alot of their products seem rather chintzy and overpriced. I have particular loathing for the SOG Trident. Awful spring assist, just felt incredibly cheap.

I don't like the ethics of SOG that much either, there have been allegations that they steal designs. If I want a cheap knife, I'll stick to CRKT.

My big struggle with the Tsunami is that the Cold Steel Kobun is fairly similar and little over half the price. I like the Tsunami's styling better, but not that much better.

Never been too interested in their products, but I do have a year old NW Ranger fixed blade that I use in a pack for hiking and bought it for it's very light weight and its been excellent for the roughly $57 I paid. Bought it due to some very good online reviews and it doesn't look too tacticool. SOG seems to know how to HT AUS 8 and it takes a razor edge very easily and keeps it fairly well for the steel. I've thumped on it pretty good, batoning in the winter, etc., and it has performed well. The leather sheath is horrible but as a pack blade is hasn't been an issue...would certainly recommend this particular SOG blade as it is a real "value" knife.

Never owned or held the Tsunami. Like the looks of it though. Came very close to buying one on sale once. I guess if the price is right and you like it why not?

I try very hard not to make recommendations on knives I've never used or owned, or at least know someone who has that told me about it. Otherwise I'm just repeating what I've read and try not to do that.

Sorry I can't give you a better opinion or offer any personal experience with it.

Sog has a sub forum here. Maybe you could post your question about the Tsunami there and someone who actually has one could tell you what they think of it.

Best of luck!

I have quite a few SOGs. They were the first knives I started buying after joining this forum.

I have not bought every SOG, but the only one that ever was pretty bad was the Flash II. Have owned serveral and each had more blade play than I like. I used them for work knives and they eventually "walked away". Didn't worry about it much. I like the Twitch II and Twitch XL. I like the Access Card 2.0. I like the Vulcan and Mini-Vulcan.

I have a NW Ranger that I never really used. It is one of the old ones with the partially serrated edge. Have several Tigersharks; one is a SK5 version and the others predate the current handle design and have the partially serrated blade. I think the Seal Pup Elite is an excellent knife. I also think a Field Pup is hard to beat for a tucked away survival knife and general purpose woods blade if you like the size. I like the revolver hunter and find it useful from time to time when I carry it in the woods. The saw is razor sharp. Mine predates the current Chinese version. I have a Tech I and Tech II Bowies which I think are pretty good knives if you like the size.

Have not been buying SOGs since I picked up the Access Card 2.0. It is a very good knife actually, but maybe a little expensive. The copied spydie hole really turned me off to the point that I pretty much stopped looking at their blades and have lost track of their many new offerings since that point in time.

I recommend SOGs from time to time or at least the ones that I am familiar with.

I've had a Pentagon Elite I for years and beat the living crap out of the thing and it's still in very usable/flickable condition. Looks like hell but I do still EDC it when I don't want to ruin one of my shiny new models. I've even been tempted to pick up another one to have for a spare.

In 2002, I was TDY for an exercise and four of us went out to retrieve 13 rolls of concertina wire. The first 12 were fine, the last one was uncooperative, so I used my PowerPlier to cut it. It worked, but the jaws bent. I called SOG, asked if that constituted abuse. They apologized for the problem and said to send it back. It took about a month, but they returned it with new jaws, no questions asked.

I have a SOG Creed and it's a great looking knife, and a decent chopper for as thick as it is. For folders, I have two old Stingrays that I like but the kraton deteriorated and I replaced it on both. I also have a Tomcat 2.0 and I really like it. It's huge and mine has a couple of minor flaws but it's a good knife.

My $0.02.

Next to Cold Steel, SOG is the most reviled brand on this forum. I have a Flash II and a Visionary II and have no complaints about either.
The AUS8 on the Flash is as good as anything I've found and the Visionary in VG10 is excellent, although the ARC lock is not as smooth
as my RitterGrip. If you stay away from the low-end stuff I think SOG is a quality product, although pricey.

I couldn't agree with you more. I'm no die hard Sog fan but I like to think I'm fair and call it the way I see it and give credit where credit is due.

Sog makes some very good knives and has a couple of real stand out's in it's line up that deserve mention. But it does seem like it's everyone's favorite knife to hate here on BFC. Too bad and not deserved in my opinion.

My Sog Vulcan is a great knife on many levels and also tied with my BM Rift for the smoothest opening knife I own.

When people say "low end stuff" offered by SOG, what do they mean? Are these the Fusion line?

I think the Fusion line is actually decent for its prices, even though it is their "budget" product line. To me, SOG's "low end" is anything that doesn't use the actual Arc lock and VG-10.

I had a SOG Pentagon Elite no too long ago and it was a great knife. It was so smooth when opening, and the heft of the blade would make a nice "Click" when the lock engaged. The only thing that I didn't like was that the blade steel was hard to hone to a razor edge, but it held the edge well once you got it. Plus the glass filled handle was very sturdy and comfortable. All in all about 4/5. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good combat/ self defense folder.

My take is......knives fixed or folders are over priced for what you get. That said the seal pup fixed I like and use....and I like the plain edged trident folder, but its overly complicated and built not so well...as every version I have played with has blade play up and down and regardless develops side to side play.

The only other thing I dislike is the sog stamped everywhere they can fit it and the folders with the exception of a few are way over done in design. Above and beyond usefulness often.

I actually like a lot of their fixed blades, and some of their folders. Some of the folders seem a bit overly 'tacticool', but they sell apparently.

Interesting thread. I knew SOG were much maligned on these forums but I'd never realized that people made a clear distinction between their folders and their fixed blades. Since I'm not really that into folders I was always a little confused since I think their fixed blades are quite good for what they are, although I do believe there are some better value options.

One of my first blades a few years ago when I stared buying knives was a seal pup. I liked it but gave it to a friend after acquiring more fixed blades. Kind on mis it really, would have been a great blade to toss in the car trunk just to have a fixed with you.

IMO SOG sells about 75% of their products based on image/marketing. When the user gets said product in hand they sometimes wonder why so many people believe their marketing/image.
