I'm picking a ruger Gunsite scout rifle up later this week and I'm trying to decide on a optic and sling for it.
For a sling I'm considering the blue force gear combat applications sling but I'm not set.
For optics I'm not sure if I want a scope, scout scope, red dot, or halographic sight.
What do you guys think or recommend? And remember I'm not rich ;)

I really have no input on the sling, but the scope...

Do you want to get an extended eye relief scope and mount it on the rail, or take the rail off, put filler screws in (I think they're 6-40 threads) and use a standard eye relief scope by using the factory rings on the receiver?

On that rifle, I think a red dot would be fun, but besides mounting extended eye relief scopes, I don't have any user experience.

I would like to look at an ext relief scope with adjustable power. I hear rumors that leupold custom shop makes a 1-4 power scout scope. Or a red dot.

The red dot would be fast and light and better at low light. But magnification is hard to argue with

But....what was the scout rifle designed to be? A long range precision shooter or a close (300 yards or in)...scout..rifle? I personally think a red dot would be fine, but a 1-4 or a 1-5 would be right at home too

If going red dot I have fallen in love with the aim point PRO. Post pics when all done please !

Will do. Most guys that shoot distance with their GSR say that they have no problems reaching out 600yrds. I don't think I will shoot that far often but it could be nice. Plus groundhogs look small at 200yrds. Choices choices choices.
But a dot has advantages. I guess I need to look through some glass

Better yet though would be a high power scope (4-16x or 5-25x) with an auxillary 1x red dot mounted at a 45 degree angle offset. Then your covered from up close all the way out to a mile with the right person behind it.

Good call with the Blue force gear, I was going to suggest either one of those (padded combat application sling) or a Murray's.

You can't go wrong with either. They are the 2 best IMO. Some people prefer leather, and they do go better with a wood stocked gun. I prefer the padded combat apps in multicam, with the plastic hardware, for sound reduction.

As for the scope, Leupold makes a scope for your exact application. It's made to be mounted out front.

I wish I had the funds to get a scope that costs as much as the rifle but its not happening.
This will be a farm/brush gun so I don't need lots of zoom and I'm also trying to watch how much weight gets put on the rifle. I was talking to Greaser on the scrapyard forums and we came up with the idea to mount three push button type sling swivels on the stock. One on the back left side of the but stock, one on the left forward of the action, and one up towards the front of the stock. That would allow for an almost single point carry when shooting but would allow me to use it like a should strap and carry it barrel up without getting a magazine In The back.

Blue Force is nice but don't care for the single point hard on the jewels...for a brush gun red dots are the ticket and when funds are available
you could add a multiplier at a later date...I have had good success with my springfield scout set up this way for coyotes....:D:

For a sling I love my slogan outdoors. It is a stretch rubber that really helps relive fatigue
, aids in shooting as it hold the rifle tight through natural tension and does not slip off

As far as optics it depends on what distance you plan to primarily shoot at. I have had good luck with a Nikon shotgun scope 1.5x6x36 as it provides 5" of eye relief so I am bridge the gap between a scout scope with long eye relief and a traditional rifle scope with normally less than 4".

Probably best to decide what your primary target will be and what average distance. Theres no optic that covers all bases.
