Optics and sling recommendations for ruger GSR (off topic)

Nothing wrong with tacticool :) looks like Burris makes a 2-7 adjustable power scout scope with bdc. I sent an email to leupold asking about their scout scopes. Looks like they have one production model scout scope and several through he the custom shop. I'm wondering what they can build and for how much.
My current train of thought is do I use iron sights for longtime and get a nice scout scope or do I save for a little bit and get a medium quality red dot(vortex, Burris) and the. Save even longer for a scout scope ;)

Jay714 that is a pretty cool sling and now on the running!
The tactical intervention is also a cool design
I do like the ability to sling it across the chest

Viking Tactics sling is a good sling, I use one on my patrol rifle and my Tikka T3 .308. I would avoid a single point sling for sure and go with a 2 point.

My dad has the three points on his ARs. I find the concept good but there is so much strap it's awkward.
I'm trying to keep it a little simpler. That's why I'm leaning towards those quick adjust two points that allow the rifle to be slinged across the back or across the chest with enough room to shoulder and fire

Also does anyone have spare mag recommendations.
I have found alpha industries type II as well as the ruger factory. I was wondering who else makes em.

Tough choices for sure. Wish I had some good advice but really dont have the knowledge on long eye relief scopes to offer.

I would like to see pics though once it is finished.

For slings, I run an old two point MP5 sling. I've tried just about all of them, but I always go back to this one. FYI, Its on my 10inch M4, as I have no experience with the scout rifle.

The more I think about the optic. I think illumination could be essential. Low/no light shooting makes it hard to see crosshairs

I can't help much on the sling as I just use a comfy old shoulder strap since banging around with a 8-9lb rifle strapped to your body while trying to do other things is just silly utility wise. Just set the rifle down, use both hands for a bit and then pick it back up when ready to move on.

I am currently on a very low speed/bandwidth connection right now so I can't do much other than point you to previously posted info in a review on the rifle & optics over at rugertalk here. http://www.rugertalk.com/forum/f16/gsr-user-review-thoughts-pics-703/

It shows pics of a trijicon accupoint, if memory serves a TR20-2g, mounted on a gsr with a reversed 0moa larue extended mount that works extremely well. Not cheap, but very handy, has battery free green illumination and excellent 3-9x magnification with clarity in low light for about an extra pound of weight. If it were to fail or the need for 1x arises then a quick throw of two levers removes it and takes you back to the very accurate factory peep sights which should cover out to 300m no problem. I also cover the magazine options/weights that I have used and the ruger factory polymer 10rd is the way to go.

Good luck with your choice as there are many options to choose from, these were just mine. :)

I have debated this myself more than once. Go over to scoutrifle.org and become a member. They have all the up to date info on Scout slings, Leupold scout mounts, magazine info, etc. I personally am leaning toward AZTimT's approach myself as I built a scout Marlin 336 with a dot scope and quickly got bored with the inability to shoot long range which is what I really enjoy these days. However I like the scout because I like back up iron sights on a rifle and a detachable mag is nice too.

I have never had a variable scout scope in my hand but if they are as finicky about eye relief as pistol scopes that are variable I don't think I want one.

Thanks I will check it out. I'm afraid of not being able to take advantage of the .308 round with just a red dot. That's why the adjustable illuminated reticles have my eye
