Optics and sling recommendations for ruger GSR (off topic)

I use Viking Tactic sling almost to all my rifles.
As far as the optic, depending on what you want to use the rifle for. If for precision, I would go with power optic.

Messer 454 I tried to register but it will not let me register at the scout forum

huh. I will have to look into that if I get a chance tonight. It is a small forum and I think it is run by 1 guy. I remember something about having to send or recieve an email but now I can't remember.

Looks like they will not take a Gmail account due to spam. I am not a computer guy so I'm not sure if that is the problem. Look here http://www.scoutrifle.org/index.php?topic=2522.0

and here http://www.scoutrifle.org/index.php?topic=1110.0 for ideas and if you can't figure it out email the guy in the first link. It is his forum I think.

Gundog- All this GSR talk and going over to the scout rifle forum tipped me off to a dealer who has the stainless ones in stock for not too bad of a price. Ordered one and some extra polymer 10 rd mags today!!

I only had time to shoot ten rounds just to see where the sights where at from the factory.
And 40yrds every round hit a popcan. I believe this could be a sub MOA rifle with the right rounds and shooter.

Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24.
Illuminated Reticle.
Great scope for the money. Vortex warranty is awesome. They don't care if you run over your scope with your truck just for fun. Send them back the old scope they will send you a new one.
I have this scope on my Hog Gun. 6.8spc Stag AR. You can get this scope under $500.

Big optics on a Scout rifle are really defeating the purpose, maybe one one the Leupolds in the 1-5 range that have illuminated reticles ?? You can then run it one 1x lit up and it will work close to a sigle point, 5 or 6x is as much as you need on what should be a fast handling rifle. I am just buying a 6.5.20 MkIV Leupold for my longer range .308 but would never go near that on a Scout.

So Gundog what did you end up getting, any updates?
I just picked up a GSR yesterday, two 5 round mags and one additional 10 rounder. So I'm figuring out my set up.
Sling should not be a problem, a simple adjustable two point is all I want. Glass I'm leaning toward the Burris 2-7x32 scout scope or Leupold 2.5x28 Scout in QD rings, illumination is not a requirement for me and I definitely want a forward mounted scope.
I have also read great reports on the PWS Precision Rifle Compensator, I'm not a fan of the birdcage FS.
I'll be sighting it in this weekend with the iron sights, if I can find time from fence building on the homestead in Utah.

Have to recommend two-point over single or three point designs. Three-point has too many straps and is unwieldy for a long gun IMO. Single point is my choice for defensive shotgun, but offers no support for shooting LR. Two-point gives you the ability to carry the rifle securely without damaging the jewels or knees and gives you extra stability for LR shots. The VTAC slings come to mind immediately. As for optics, I prefer an EOtech for anything within 150 yards or so, and a 1-4(or greater)x scope past that. Congrats on the GSR, that's one worth saving up for.

From personal experience, do yourself a huge favor and look at the Aimpoint Micro T1. I use the 2 MOA dot. The battery life is 20,000 hours, the batteries are cheap (2 for $6.00 at Walgreen), it waterproof, VERY light. There is LITERALLY no downside. Then get yourself an Aimpoint or Vortex 3X magnifier. That does two things. 1) you can get the Aimpoint now and use it 2) when you get a few dollars ahead you can buy your magnifier. I run this exact setup on my work gun. A Daniel Defense 10.5" AR-15. I have gotten very solid hits at 200 with just the red dot. You can easily shoot sub 6" groups at 200 yards with no magnification. That is a kill on a deer or even an antelope out to 200. Then for greater distances, you go to your magnifier. I am not usually that passionate about "gear" on rifles etc. however, this set up is fantastic. If you get the mount that swings out of the way, you can carry it flipped out of the way or inline, either way you find suitable. I don't want to ramble, but it is a STELLAR set up.

I have 16 years of law enforcement experience, and have been carrying a rifle for about 14 of those years. I've run about all the systems at one time or another.

the best scout scopes i can afford have always been made by Burris. This would be my choice

With a .308, if you want to get the full potential out of the round, you're going to want a magnified optic. A red dot will get you out to 300 yards but your accuracy will be pretty bad. Hitting a person will be possible, but that's about it. With a magnified optic, you'll be able to hit a 5" target at 300 yards without trouble (better with some rifles)

Better yet though would be a high power scope (4-16x or 5-25x) with an auxillary 1x red dot mounted at a 45 degree angle offset. Then your covered from up close all the way out to a mile with the right person behind it.

You have no idea what the GSR rifle was designed for.

I have a Comp 3 on mine and it works great and remains light over all.
Doing it over I would spend a bit more and get a Comp 4S because it is just a bit slicker.
These make great mountain rifles when you keep them light weight.

The sling is one of the wide, scuba type cloth that is springy and gives some bounce as you walk so it doesn't wear on you for long tracking sessions at altitude.

Another tipis to carry the rifle with a 3 or 5 round mag in the gun and the 10 round mag in your pack or pocket, that makes for an easier caring rifle and the ability to change ammo or add more rounds with the change of a mag.
