Optimal edge type for self defence applications?

Does that now mean you may not go to jail if you use a knife for self defense?

Spending time in lockup to make bail so a magistrate can determine the "no bill" or file a complaint isn't really jail time as I had envisioned from the post about doing jail time.

Bail can be posted quickly, no need to spend more than a few hours in the cell before getting bailed, unless you don;t have the money or family to come up with it.

I've sat a few hours myself on ocassion, and it didn't require I mame or kill another. No criminal record to date, no charges, made bail and it was dismissed. In my line of work, you can run afoul pretty quick until things get straightened out, thats a normal course of business whether it's a gun, a knife, or an ashtray used to defend with if the results were the same which culminated in someone being injured or killed in a SD situation.

I would only use the knife for SD as a way to get away. Brandish it and let them know that you have SOMETHING. Hope like hell that would be enough to stop the situation.

Other than that, I would only use the thing to keep parts of the BG's anatomy at bay. I am not trained in knife fighting and the very thought of knife combat scares the hell out of me. I would not try for a "stab" because I fear the proximity. Unless of course, somehow I got "grabbed" in which case I would stab or cut or flail and TRY to reestablish distance.

To me, DISTANCE is the key goal. I have CCW and even there I know enough that shooting someone is going to cost dearly so again....DISTANCE. Wherever possible....DISTANCE.

So, I guess my position is with the sharp plain edge replies. Enough to inflict a wound on someone trying to get TO me. Whatever keeps them AWAY is what I want.

No Jim Bowie sandbar-tied wrists-duel-cut-slash stuff here, boss.

Keep your knife sharp; the difference between edges is so minimal. Also-YOU DO NOT CARRY A KNIFE FOR SELF DEFENSE! You happen to carry a knife, and used it for self defense-otherwise, you are admitting that you carry a dangerous weapon in many jurisdictions. This includes the south, where everyone carries knives, but use guns for SD. Write on, men..Joe

I think that Jerry Hossom put some time into studying the sharpness issue for his fighting blades, and determined that a super-polished hair-popping edge worked best, but I don't recall the reasoning.

As for optimal blade shape, do a search on the Ronin - the small wharncliff apparently packs a serious wallop as a cutter, more than blades with belly, and the tip is very sharp for easy penetration. And I think that Janich, Snody and/or Ivan Campos determined in tests on meat that a chisel-ground blade with a single steep hollow grind produced the most damaging wounds.

I stand corrected.

Maybe a plain edge might work better. Then again i've never tried slashing anyone. All my blades are plain edged. Hopefully i'll never have to test its abilities on someone.
