Nice, im still relatively new to knives, stroppings for putting the finish on the cutting edge or a super fine and smooth edge, correct?
I'm not very knowledgeable myself, but I believe you're correct. It helps to take the edge from this ^^^^^^^^^ (toothy), to more of an edge like this ----------- (disregard those little spaces and imagine it as one solid line). I'm not even sure if you're able to strop on horse hide or if I would need anything like compound on it. It's really mean't for straight razors.

Aw yeah, just take your time and you'll be good:thumbup:

Yes!

And nice score Daymon!
Thank-You! I got it mainly because it was cool looking and I imagined some guy in a barbershop stropping his razor on it. It would be a bonus if I learned how to free-hand strop or if I would even be able to on it.

Ok good, that way i don't have to worry about un intentionally doing something stupid, i can remove a millionth of a centimeter of material, and than think about what i done did, and remove the next millionth...
But ya, should be a fun way to go through the week, also, does anyone here know enough about metalurgy to help me figure the grad of the steel? From pics and instructed tests

ok, i need me one of them, so does stropping leather sort of act like a super duped ubsr fine grip?

Definitely...it's kinda cool to think about the history of old things.

Yes. It's what you normally do after your stones.

Just to clarify, bare leather can be used to knock off a bur, it won't actually polish the blade, you need some kind of compound for that.

this is what i have drawn out for the blanks, the outer line is slack for the plasma cutting, and will be finely rounded with a dremmel or file, the smaller one will be my practice knife, the steel i found is about 1/8 thick and is sturdy and just a pinch flexible

Not to split hairs ;) pun intended. Properly cased leather (wetted and then heavily rolled out) will bring the fine silicates in the leather up more. These are very fine, so they do a bit of polishing.

Also you can still get an edge without a burr right off the stones, it just takes a little different technique. This edge in the video below was done with no stropping just right off the stones.

Draw bigger lines. The plasma cutter will burn the metal where it cuts and you'll have the grind the "burnt" metal of the edges, around 1/16" of the edges will be hardend to the point were a file won't work. You'll need a grinder. Just a suggestion, does your drandpa have any old worn out files laying around? Using one of them would be much easier. You would have to aneal (soften) it though.

Good point. :) still bare leather won't do any significant polishing correct? And yes I do realizes you can remove the bur off the stone...which I've tried in the past without good results:o but I have a strop, so why not use it right?

BTW Zach, just realized a file wouldn't be big enough for your design, so disregard that part please. :)

I do not think it will do any serious polishing. Although some people do just use bare leather to finish their edge as the final step after the compounds.

Sure, me just switching my technique to not stropping was just a different challenge I wanted to try.

Even after stropping, you'll have a burr. The burr will be so small though that you'll have to see it under a microscope to even tell It's there. It won't effect performance, but you'll always have a burr.
