So where's the 19% Mehrwertsteuer? All imports have 19% Mehrwertsteur (VAT /sales Tax) added and that's added to the shipping costs too. Duty is separate. And I have a Zollnummer so I can do the forms online.

Well, "Mehrwertsteuer" is actually not the correct technical term. The correct term is "Umsatzsteuer", and when it comes to importing goods from abroad this "Umsatzsteuer" is called "Einfuhrumsatzsteuer" or in English "Import Turnover Tax", and that's what I'm talking about in my video. And yes, customs duties are extra.

No, it doesnt really help. Umsatzsteuer, Einfuhrumsatzsteuer and Mehrwertsteer are the same friggin' thing: 19% Value Added Tax / national sales tax.
How about Apple Turnover Tax?
I've been inporting goods into Germany for over 20 years. Some things used to come through free and clear in DM days. Not anymore. I had to pay €11 on my Christmas present from my Mom this year! And it was a couple of pair of jeans for my wife and a shirt for me.
The good thing about American Customs is they do not care about all that crap. Containers, large shipments: Yes. Prohibited goods: Yes. Private people importing a shirt or a pocket knife: No. US Customs goes for the important stuff.
God knows how much it costs the German govt. to just do the paperwork on all this small time crap. There were at least 50 people in Customs today, most of whom were saying stuff to the Customs people like "I dont know how much it cost, the shirt is a birthday present from my Aunt."
