Organized list of Handlewoods

What a lot of great info!
One thing I wish I had is a list of what woods react to steel wool. It's such a great abrasive, but I'm afraid to use it after ruining some oak.
Beech is another one, it's solid and tends to be stable, but not that interesting to look at- stains when exposed to anything with iron in it.
I assume stabilized woods wouldn't react to steel wool?

That steel reaction could be due to a few things. First off is oak as a wood has above average levels of tannic acid, which can break down the iron into rust.

Great thread and a lot of info to digest- thanks guys. A quick question though- would evergreen oak make good handle wood? TIA

Oak works, but given the relatively low prices of exotic scales "can be found for 7-10 dollars per set", even in Europe I think its worth it to go finer.

Great thread. Just read through it. A wood that is often overlooked, that I just happen to be lucky enough to have a very large supply of, is rainbow poplar. It absolutely requires stabilization, as its soft, but it can have amazing color and great curl. I have a few great blocks with a tight fiddleback curl from the last log I cut up. It happens to grow on the land I own. The color comes from minerals in the soil.

Can anyone please help me identify these woods. I believe they are different, but I'm not quite sure. The close up photo is of the grayer block. The block that is reddish does have some tight curl, although it isn't very distinct. No distinct odor when cutting. Any help or suggestions would be great.

It doesn't look like other mango that I've seen. It seems to be denser than mango also. I have some Hawaiian Mango and some other stuff that I just got that I think I figured out is Philippine Mango. I appreciate all suggestions.

I just looked at the mango that Mark posted for sale, and the grain pattern is similar, but it still doesn't have a similar color or density. I guess I'll call it Mango until I know different.

Looks kind of like the mesquite I had before, it was light colored and had that same type of swirly pattern. I may be wrong.
