Origin of the word 'SPEY' for a castrating knife blade

More and more livestock producers are going to banding. I know the cattlemen in the east are using different methods of castration then the western producers. Everybody round these parts either band at birth or use a big bander at weaning and give a tetanus shot. I'm on the fence with both. Some animals u have to cut bc the way their scrotum is. Cattle and sheep u can band but hogs and horses u still have to remove the testicals. I've used every different kind of blade to castrate. I like a thin Spey blade or a sodbuster.

That’s why they call it Speyside. They use a speyd to dig the peat to smoke the grain to make the Scotch. :D

And after a couple of drams of the 60 ABV cask strength spirit you could be spayed and never feel a thing.

I am not on the fence at all. I think banding is one of the most inhumane things I have witnessed. All you really have to do is think about it from the perspective of if you were personally given a choice but it was going to be done:eek:

Very off topic. Just could not help myself. 5th generation cattle rancher and I have a definite opinion about this.

Where I come from:

Dogs are neutered

Cats are spayed

Cattle are CUT!

I do agree with you about thinner is better. We have switched to a disposable scalpel the last few years, cost effective and always SHARP!

Interesting that the terms used are the same in Missouri as they are in Texas, Brad. And I agree, banding just seems wrong to me. To paraphrase Shakespeare, if you're going to do it, get it over with quickly. We part ways when it comes to disposable scalpels, though; I don't like the chance of one ending up on the ground outside the chute or in the pen, and even if you keep a sharps container handy there's always something that doesn't make it in. But I don't use disposable needles or syringes either, for the same reason.

Here in Kansas it is common to hear that the female dog gets "spaded" ;)

The term is often used wrongly with either gender.... :D
