what would you call the reddish markings on this OO. it is supposed to be freshley cut. The fella calls it splating. what do yall think. Ive seen some like this on the 4-sale section--they called it figured. marekz
Looks like that was cut from the crotch-stump area. You will see darker and red spots if your not deep into the heart wood and where limps and roots are.
What little I've actually cut one well enough to study the grain you can get some very nice figure in the stump but you will see a lot of cracks and spots like that leading down into the stump from the branches. Almost rotten areas that seem moldy. An Osage doesn't look much different under the ground than on top except the limps are very stiff and the roots are not. Most Osage don't have much of a trunk, they are more like a hedge. Hence the name hedge apple.
