OT - Don Needs Advice - Non-Lethal, Concealable Weapon

Ladies and Gents;

I'm in a bit of a pickle. I've done nothing - it just sort of sprang up around me as sometimes these things do.

I need a non-lethal, very concealable weapon. I've got some ideas already but I want to approach the question from afresh. Sometimes some pretty slick developments turn the less-than-effective gizmo of a year ago into something worthwhile today, and I confess that I have not stayed up to snuff on the latest developments in non-lethal weapons technologies.

I'm not at liberty to discuss this publicly yet, might never be able to in fact - depending.

And, I know you folks who've known me for a long time from other venues know that I am a warrior, and that I would not be asking specifically for non-lethal weapons ideas if I didn't have a real good reason to be asking for it. If I thought this was an issue to be handled with my usual weapons, then I'd simply strap on my Alessi Watch Six with its Glock 27, and my 15" Siru and then be about my business without bothering you fine people.

Thanks in advance. I appreciate it.

Don

Effective at what distance?

Effective with how much training?

Dissuasive or disabling?

Low tech or high tech?

Assuming you are familiar with standard simple weapons
of martial arts, or street, or common police/military issue;
And that you're looking for something different.

What area are you looking for?

You do say "gizmo";
so electronic / pressure activated / technologic
rather than the newest baton or kubaton or ......?

Check into the "Cosh" - a small telescoping baton used by German police.
Cold steel sells the South African 'lash' that would
fit down a pantleg.
Or even down the back.
I forget the name.

Lest anyone wonder;
yes I abhor violence,
but,
there are times of neccesity &
I Don's one of the good guys out to stop trouble,
not a street hood out to start it.

The cold steel whip is a copy of the south african rhino hide Sjambok, It causes intense pain if you have room to swing it.
Historicaly one lash Makes most people run..

The most discrette & legal weapon I know of is a thin all steel propeling pencil & accurate placement.Guess it can be lethal though, Depends on your placement.

The other question is:

Is this for one-to-one use,
or against more than one?
If the latter, scattergun or repeater.

Also, single use vs limited repeat vs long repeat?

Sorry Don.

I think you're going to have to give a little more direction
to get a useful response.

All Dean's questions are spot on.

but,

aerosol spray cologne/perfume personal sized container.

Thick broad tip magic marker.

Wal mart $1 spray paint (your choice of colors)

Feet...(run)

Sorta depends if you have to have the thing on your person or if it can sit in the car. Also depends on where you are likely to see such fine folks and how many. Also would you be able to deploy quickly enough. All sorts of stuff to look at. You should also see what da cops would think about you if you would happen to show your friends your new tools.

I keep a surplus entrenching tool in the back seat for digging holes.

I likes da feets.

Go to: Mendowood and look over their canes. Recommend that you call and talk to the owner/maker, as my 33 inch arrived weighing 40 ozs.

These are hardwood core glued inside galvanized steel and covered with epoxy and industrial black paint to look like blackthorne sticks. I don't know which would come out on top - a Louisville slugger or a Mendowood cane - if they went against each other. But the Mendowood is far heavier that it looks.

I would suggest buying a lighter cane. Even then, it would still have the capacity for lethal blows. Check out his specials, the freehands**. They really look like classy special gentlemen's canes, not weapons.

I have both a 6/6 moly filled nylon 1" walking stick and a cane from Eric Blair that are offshoots of the 3/4" fighting sticks he makes that blow bamboo away. He also had some denser materials you might want to check into. Blair Edged Tools is on the Usual Suspect Net forums. They are near indestructable but lighter than I'd choose to deliver bone breaking blows. They'd do it, but might need a couple shots due to their lightness. The Mendowoods wouldn't.

** On the homepage click on the Catalog button. That will take you to a greater selection than the homepage shows. Then click on the Bargain Basement.

Rusty-- is the Mendowood the cane you had at the Khonvention? I wanted to check it out, but never really got a chance. That thing looked quite substantial and very bad-ass.

I have read that for those who have some martial arts training, a fan or umbrella is effective and not considered a weapon if you are searched. Canes could be confiscated in some places. There are lots of disabling martial arts moves from several disciplines which use pressure points to cause pain and stop people without really permanently hurting them.

Most fan moves are as applicable to a rolled up magazine,
collapsed umbrella, short stick or stick shape of any kind,
or even a blade.
Fan specific moves are usually hiding another move,
surprising/shocking the opponent,
or distracting/directing their attention.

Don if you are" handy with your hands" try my old favorite, sap gloves. Low tech descreet and effective when applied correctly.

Red:

If you recall, my bookmarks were wiped out by an I-Worm ( SWEN.A ). Sorry to take so long to get back to you but I had to re-find them all and save them then copy to here.

The Usual Suspect Network is now at USN

Eric's email: eric@usualsuspect.net

There is a listing on the TAD forum of USN under Blair T. Toys. ( For Toxic Toys ). It lists such items as the Fighting sticks
( F-stix ) And titanium chopsticks. Eric's former Toxic Toys site is no longer on the USN forums** that I can tell ( it's format has been changed around recently. )

Some of the Toxic Toys sound like they'd be interesting to Don ( Titanium Chopsticks etc. )

** Correction - the forum has been renamed and moved within the USN forums. Go to: Knifemaker Area> Individual Knifemaker Forums> Toxic By Blair

Going out of my way to be helpful,

Blair Toys - pictures and prices.

Josh: if it was grey, it was the moly nylon 6/6 from Eric ( See above ) if it was black and looked like a thick blackthorne stick, it was the Mendowood, modified to fit my hands.

( I forgot to mention that Mendowood makes Shillelaghs to order {{ unloaded - you have to drill and add lead dust yourself if that's what you want }}. )

Have you considered the Charter Arms or the North American .22 LR
with 5 rounds of "RAT" shot pellets.

If your target is a animal it'll sting without killing and if a large predator it could blind.

Recommend test firing at different ranges to determine pattern and penetration on cardboard boxes.

Crown Royal bag with $10-15 in change. Will give you two or three good thumps on someone before the bag will break. You just happened to have it on you so you could cash it in. Also a thick wool sock will work better but does look more like it was intended as a weapon. Have you checked what you can or can't carry legally? If that is a concern. Big steel toed boots. As said before various pens and other office items ie Briefcase with several hardcover books, a heavy duty printer cable or power cord that could be used as a whip/flail. Even a rolled up newpaper or magizine pushed into someones tummy until it touches their spine will...ahhh hurt. 1.5 liter bottled water, freeze it. Get one of those zip up insulated covers with the heavy nylon straps. Several hours or more of very hard club/flail. Just a quick few. Hope that helps. Good luck.
