OT - Don Needs Advice - Non-Lethal, Concealable Weapon

Don if you are" handy with your hands" try my old favorite, sap gloves. Low tech descreet and effective when applied correctly.

I've not heard that term before. What are they?

Thanks.

Have you considered the Charter Arms or the North American .22 LR
with 5 rounds of "RAT" shot pellets.

If your target is a animal it'll sting without killing and if a large predator it could blind.

Recommend test firing at different ranges to determine pattern and penetration on cardboard boxes.

Guns are definitely out of the question. California considers EVERY use of a firearm, ie, trigger pulled and shot fired, to be the application of deadly force.

Can't paint myself into that corner in this situation.

Thanks though.

Crown Royal bag with $10-15 in change. Will give you two or three good thumps on someone before the bag will break. You just happened to have it on you so you could cash it in. Also a thick wool sock will work better but does look more like it was intended as a weapon. Have you checked what you can or can't carry legally? If that is a concern. Big steel toed boots. As said before various pens and other office items ie Briefcase with several hardcover books, a heavy duty printer cable or power cord that could be used as a whip/flail. Even a rolled up newpaper or magizine pushed into someones tummy until it touches their spine will...ahhh hurt. 1.5 liter bottled water, freeze it. Get one of those zip up insulated covers with the heavy nylon straps. Several hours or more of very hard club/flail. Just a quick few. Hope that helps. Good luck.

Good ideas. $10-$20 in quarters and some other change in one of my former nylon cloth money sacks would make an excellent striking or trapping device.

Cane is a good idea.

Waterbottle is also a good idea. I would choose one of the Lexan (hard, clear plastic) Nalgene brand - about $8. 1 Liter would be a bit slow if full, so you could go down to a 1/2 Liter which would also be more concealable. Tough loop on the top for swinging purposes. They're also available in colors - who would thing you're going to beat them with a pink waterbottle? You'd have to be careful, though. A well-placed head shot from a reasonable strong person could be lethal.

A carabiner - the clips you see everyone with their keys on, started out as climbing gear - would make decent knuckles. You'd have to be a bit choosy to find one that fit your hand (I have skinny fingers) and have a broad finger contact area so you don't break your fingers, too. Go to a camping store that sells climbing gear, they should have a dozen or more different models to choose from. Innocuous looking because they're everywhere these days.

Finally, if you want a purpose-built tool, good stuff has been said about the Spyderco Gunting, though I don't own one myself. There is an edge-less version available - the CRIMPT - which has all the sharp points of the regular version, but the blade is blunted. (CRIMPT is only available directly from the designer, so far as I know) There is also a blunted Training model which has some of the handle points rounded off, but is still servicable as a striking/trapping device. This may have a learning curve, so if you need it NOW it might not be the best option. Gunting + tape training system would probably run $150 -$200 depending on which tapes you got and if you could find one used. Our favorite khuk user (Saint) Jim is also a rabid Guntaholic. Howard Wallace, also an HI fan, posted a review of his edged Gunting on the Spyderco forum, saying it was a great utility knife.

Hope this helps. As Sarge says, keep your head on a swivel. Don't get yourself or anyone else into unnecessary trouble.

Thanks. Good tips. The pink water bottle reminds me of when I used to teach personal defense. One of my teaching tips was that if one wanted to carry a gun concealed in a fanny pack, to avoid black or camo'd ones as they tend to attract a lot of attention with their SWAT/Ninja/Miltary appearance. I always recommended certain brands and nice "civilian" colors like forest green or steel blue or even dual tone mauves, violets and reds.

I used to carry a padlock that my middle finger would fit through when I knew trouble could come my way.

The weapon from Cold Steel that Dean was talking about is pronounced Shamboc. That is not how it is really spelled. It is the weapon the South African Police used for riot control. It comes in three lengths if I remember right. The short one would sure do the job. Care must be taken not to cause too much damage to flesh.:) :D

Interesting idea, Pappy. Thanks.

42 years ago ( jaysus am I OLD!!!), I stumbled upon the recent conclusion of the intersection of a drunk enforcer, a plate glass door, and an error in judgement. I ended up with "sap gloves." Professional grade.

Beautifully stitched leather gloves, with powder lead pouches covering the knuckles to joint parts of your hands. Protection for your hands, and an impressive additional to the striking power.

Also illegal as hell. There is NO justification for having them should LEOs ask. They imply "intent."

And frankly, "INTENT" is what you need to be aware of. Handly self-defense stuff is best. The million dollars of quarters is hard to explain.

Any cane, walking stick from a re-sale shop is better than nothing.

The consequences of use need to be considered prior to engagement. If you can be held liable by virtue of premeditation, don't use the tool.

as many of the otherwise valuable suggestions would seem to be illegal:
CALIFORNIA CODES
PENAL CODE
SECTION 12020-12040

12020. (a) Any person in this state who does any of the following
is punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year
or in the state prison:
(1)… possesses any … nunchaku, …any metal knuckles, …any
leaded cane, …, or any instrument or weapon of the kind commonly known as a blackjack, slungshot, billy, sandclub, sap, or sandbag.

I have edited the code section to remove all references to firearms and bladed weapons.
Free legal advice is worth every penny you pay for it:)

Fresno County in California DOES issue CCW's. Others may as well. But I find the things that have happenened there over the last 20 years to individual rights utterly despicable.

Nice site, selling all sorts of leather products.
Big selection of whip$!

Sells kangaroo hides at what seems a very good price.
About $60 for a 5 SqFt skin.

Can't see using a whip if 2-3 attackers are in kicking range.

Somewhere in the house I have an old (late 60's) cattleman's bullwhip.
Dropped by an idiot that cut & rode through a fence on my
grandfather's small farm. :barf:
Papaw kept it as a toll & gave it to me.
I got pretty good with it back when.
Need to find it & dust it off; give it a good slather of conditioner.
Hang it on my new blade wall acoming.

Life would be a lot easier if we spent as much energy learning how to avoid unpleasant situations as we do learning how to react to them.

"Indiana" Dean?

hmmm.... Wasn't "Indiana Jones" named after the family dog?

What was your dog's name?

? "Cujo Dean?"

? "Butcher Dean?"

? "Fluffy?"

nevermind

Why not just carry a couple of rolls of quarters? No need to carry a whole sack of change.

Holding them in your fists while you strike will give you that extra power from the weight, and you can just drop them when needed.

I say just go hand to hand, Don. it's what you were trained for.
I do also however agree with the ninja approach.

If so happens you're in an area with a nice kitchen knife, or towel bar... chair...you might want to use it.

Your intent will likely be labelled as self-defence... especially if you're in your own home., or a place where you're supposed to be - minding your own business.

That's really the issue, right?

It doesn't need to be the 'perfect' weapon. There is no perfect weapon. Especially when you're up against multiple opponents, and don't want to kill them.

No need to carry said "weapon" with you. Just take stock of what's available where you might likely be confronted. Hopefully you've heard this before: Be flexible. Ready to modify your defense/offence at any moment as situations WILL change.

Best not to have too much of a plan., and keep the weapons simple.
also., any weapon you bring into a fight can be used against you. Though of course they can bring their own too.

That's my thoughts on this thread anyhow. Keep us posted.

Don,
The G DRONE enables you to work close & put the hurt on the BG.If you are unable or dislike working close the G is not for you!The G is an Impact TOOL,a Palm Stick,a Grappling Tool all in one!I've had LEO's look at it,ask what it is & does & "ALL"stated they would not arrest me for carrying one!I like to work close,so I really enjoy carrying it! Usually I carry a Live G & a CRMPIT or Drone!

Yeah, (sigh), I know. But L.A. County does not unless you are an elected, anti-gun Democratic Party politician or an anti-gun celebrity.
