OT:Kifaru,the Busse of Backpacks

WOW!! Great thread. I have been eyeing a Kifaru for a couple of months now. My 1 concern is I would prefer that kind of quality in a sheeple friendly pack. Any reccomendations on a very friendly pack with that kind of quality?

Mine is from Semper Paratus Tactical, Dan make a great handmade pack in several sizes or will make to order. They have lots of features and made tough! I have had mine around the world and always with me on the road. :D

I've had a Scout on order for about a month now, so should be inbound soon. Not currently a Kifaru owner, but I'm looking forward to getting the Scout and putting it to some good use.

Shigawire4sure, agreed with you on Gregory packs. They have always been GREAT innovative packs and rock solid. Osprey packs are great too and I have owned some of their smaller packs in the past. I do even like the old Mountainsmith stuff but their frame systems didn't seem to stand up to monster loads as well with the frame system being a little softer.

I have heard McHale is the bomb too. I'm not sure if thats from a pure durability stand point or if it's because they carry very well and are custom fit. I only found them after being here on this forum and on Rat Chat which is proof that there is all kinds of quality gear floating around in this trough

I still have myself down for another Kifaru for now :foot:

Randucci is right about Semper Paratus Tactical. Dan makes a couple sweet packs and will do custom tweaks for you. Plus Dan is great to work with

+1 on Dan's work. I wish I had another of his, but he is so busy, I hate to bother him for something I might not use for a while.

Both Kifaru and McHale make sweet packs! I prefer the McHales, since they are somewhat custom and more sheeple friendly:D. Also, the older, made in the USA Osprey packs are sweet packs that can be found on the 'bay at great prices. I've got more packs than knives, which is kind of scary...

I'm having McHale put the heavier cordura on my pack...so I get "kifaru toughness" with McHale customizing. :p :p :p

I'd love to see a pic of one of Dan's packs.

Im gonna be ordering a Badlands 4500 for this year. Gonna be doing a couple backcountry trips with goats. Ive been drooling over this badboy all last year.

Yeah, I've been eyeballing and drooling over Kifaru Military packs for years. I just haven't committed to plopping down that much $$$ for their stuff. Currently, I use a Kelty Kodiak, much like this one pictured, minus the front two sacks. It'll do for now.

I have a Dana Designs Astralplane, Dana Designs Bridger, Mountainsmith Bugaboo, Osprey Silhouette, and many other fine packs. Dana Designs is probably as tough as I need, and they had the most comfortable waist belt design for bony hips (as well as the best ability to handle giant loads). Mountainsmith made the only serious, full frame, fully appointed pack available for small but heavy daypack loads (like eight gallons of mud, for field biology research).

I haven't bought a pack in recent years, but I'd like to try both Kifaru and Mystery Ranch. It looks like Kifaru may be a little too task specific, for the wrong tasks for me, to suit my taste... but I will probably try them and see.

Thanks for bringing them both to my attention.

WOW!! Seems we have some pack fanatics amongst the HOGS. Well I guess I am just in the waiting period for my 1st Kifaru now but some of you brought up some ones I havent experienced so maybe ill get a fix with something else while I wait.Seems to be Dan at Semper Paratis and McHale will be on my short list as well as some others. Great to get some very informed input from you guys. I am once again very IMPRESSED with the other taste you guys display.

I have a Zulu with XTR(extreme top lid, which can be removed and carried on it own), along with an E & E and a Claymore. I want a couple of long pockets, but have not needed them yet. I was have strap management problems until I ordered some web dominators from Supply Captain. The Zulu is great, it can be a 3 day, or you can really stuff it and get 5-7, but living out of it for that long is tough without lots of pockets for organization. This was also the first pack I could carry comfortably for extended periods.

Funny - I just ordered a Kifaru Zulu last week as well :) I went with an OD pack with foliage green hardware. I don't like how tan hardware looks on the green pack.

I'm currently running an Eagle RAID (ranger green with tan hardware) and it's going to become a dedicated first aid pack when the Zulu arrives.

The 6 week wait is going to be tough but worth it if this pack lives up to even a portion of the hype.

All thumbs up for Kifaru packs and their shelters, too!
I have a Kifaru MMR, Marauder, and E&E, and a large collection of add-on pockets to deck them out. Further, I got a SuperTarp last year that worked very well on a 2 week trip in Wyoming and Colorado. Overall top company to deal with!:thumbup:

Kifarus are nice. There are a lot of other good packs for about 1/2 as much. Currently I'm trying to see if the marauder outlasts the others before picking up another larger pack (MMR probably). I used a marauder with E&E and 2 long pouches as a ruck/assault pack for 16 months straight. Worked well, and is now a nice permanent tannish acu color. I've had up to 50 pounds on it and it's been as comfortable as a much larger external/internal pack.

Here's the E&E pre use. Try to get another picture.
