OT:KSO tho...fixer upper

well, finally. phones were out till last wed. due to cut phone line to village, fired up pc after they fixed it only to have my motherboard fry itself. here i am with a new upgraded system, so i think i can post some of my pre-derusting conditions:

next step? should i be a bit more agressive on the rust? some of the rust looks red in bright sun, but indoors it all looks black, the striations across the blade are from the delightful previous owner's attempts to give it a good grind...

(i'm planning on making a wooden sheath, building up hilt end to allow partial insertion of hilt into sheath & covering the whole thing in leather. if i can find some fancy throat & chape bronzes might tart it up a bit. probably line the inside with wool felt or something similar)

You know...the grind marks you see might be an important part of history too. What if the original condition blade were picked up by a grunt during WWII and decided to make it part of his kit? He'd naturally use whatever he had available...including the local grinder to get the weapon to where he could use it.

If it were mine? I'd still only remove active rust, repair the original handle and give it a sharpening...nothing more.

Keep us posted!

ie. they have a hard high carbon edge hammer welded to a softer core and back.
i think that the half inch parallel marks are signs of this
inserted edge--rather than layered steel (lamellar/sandwich = sanmai/qiangang)

the pix show the harder|hardened edge clearly
& what you first called cracks
i think are rust pits
the pits lieing against the harder unrusted steel
which was essentially 'plugged' into/onto the edge side of the blade

Coolness  :D
