OT- Orders (It's been fun)

Kis,

I'd love to take Bert with me, but can't guarantee him a good home, and couldn't leave you without him.

I was talking to my little brother Saturday night- before I received my orders- and he was telling me about two more dogs that have begun showing up around his house. He said he thinks they probably have "homes" of their own, but don't know it, because the owners take such poor care of them. Then he said something I found really touching. For a dog, he said,

Home is where they take care of you. I found that both sweet and sad. Give Bert a hug for me.

John

Cliff,

You know, I had totally forgotten about the Mauser. If they do take me back (likely), I should at least come back with plenty of money for one .45-70 Mauser, and I'll give her a good home.

Damn, I am sorry your plans just went out the window. I had a Marine friend when I was in college. He got called up and sent there the first time around, Desert Storm. Really blew his plans all to hell. He came back and got it all done though, just took a different path. I hope the same goes for you. I hope you can get into the Cantina once in a while and let us know how you are and if there is anything we can do for you or your unit. Stay safe and come back above all.

John,

Glad to have met you at Blade. Stay safe as you can and come home in one piece. Hopefully, if you're deployed you will not be totally out of contact with the Cantina. We would like to hear what's going on from overseas directly from those who are there.

You will be taking at least one khuk aren't you?

Damn Spectre, I'm gonna miss ya' 'round here. Always one of the good guys.

I'm sorry to hear about the unscheduled change in plans, and wish you the best.

You'll be on my good thoughts and prayers list, and I'll be lookin' forward to your return with lotsa cool stories to tell. :D

Hey John,

Well, things have a way of changing on us, don't they. It was an absolute pleasure to get to know you at Blade ... and I do hope that this is only the beginning of our friendship.

Weren't we just talking about future plans? Japan and school for you, Vermont and money and fame for me? Something like that anyway...

Hopefully you'll be there and back again before you know it. And if you should find yourself in some nasty spots, use those quick feet to get the hel out of there.

Ken

Making history I dont think there is anything more bad ass than that! Take care over there, it's not half as bad as the anti-crowd wants us to believe...my old unit the 2nd Sqdn 11th ACR is over there now and I have been getting tons updates and photos...send me an email at infraredcoupe@gmail.com and I will hook you up with a care pkg with disposable cameras...Thanks for going and being one of the Good Guys!

John, you're an indispensible part of the forum here. Please come back to us, and best of luck in doing so. It really sucks that you are called up after already doing your part. Another life curve ball to deal with.

I still have your Kel-Tec Sub-9 and it is a joy to shoot. I intend to keep it.

I will echo the rest of the group and just chime in that we are here for anything you need.

Best Regards,

Norm

I hope you stay out of harm's way, Spectre... Wherever you are, do try and post once and a while, and let us know how you are. Best wishes! :)

John,

I am not hugging that dog for you. He's on bad paper right now. About a week ago, we went down to the mailbox, and then walked along the creek on the other side of the corn field. He happily splashed and galluumped around, checking back every now and then.

As we circled around to come back to the house, the idiot disappeared into high grasses and junk trees near a small rock outcropping. I called. Nothing. I called again. Nothing.

Then a "beep" (almost like the RoadRunner), then silence, then a "beep." I called again, sighed and started through the weeks and tall grass (weeds turned out to be stinging nettle.)

I followed the path he'd made through the grass and came upon Young Bert, the not-right dog, attempting to retrieve a fawn! The thing was about two feet long in the torso, and must have been a late spring fawn.

Doofus was trying to get a grip behind the shoulders so he could bring the poor thing back for ... I dunno... a house pet?

He wouldn't stop, so I finally grabbed his collar and pulled him away. He hadn't broken the skin and the fawn gave me a look as if to say, "what is HIS problem?"

We left.

I went back the next day, the fawn was gone. No blood sign, so the coyotes didn't get it, and it must have been able to get up and find Mom.

Young Bert thought it was great fun.

You SURE you can't take him?

John,

Take care of yourself. We will miss you. Maybe you and Bill Sanders and Sarge can start a cantina over there   I'm sure it would go over well.

We'll keep you in our prayers.

John, good luck friend. The cantina needs you. Thank you for all that you do. You are one of the good guys. Good enough to do it once, strong enough to come back for seconds. I'm very sorry your plans have changed, but you know that we'll do everything in our power to what we can when we can to get you back on track. You just keep your head down and know that there are at least a forum full of friends that appreciate what you are doing for us.

John, I recently got extended myself. What pissed me off about it was not that they chose to extend me pretty much to the ten year point (essentially making me a lifer) - I would've stayed, had they asked. What pissed me off was that no one asked. It was assumed.

It pisses me off even more when someone's done, then told that they're not done. I wish that these things weren't necessary but you know the saying...wish in one hand and defecate in the other and see which one fills up first, right?

I can't offer you any advice other than what you've already heard, or already know, so I'll wish you luck. I hope that's enough. If there's anything else that can be done, ask.

Well, I have been fortunate enough to have the time to have the best hunting season of my life (just before Byron's family land was unexpectedly sold off), get in a good year and a half of school, grow a mohawk, have the longest relationship I've had since my marriage ended in '98...and meet some of y'all.

One of my buddies in my old squad in A 1-5 has been stop-lossed for a year and half, and he says they're trying to force those getting out to stay active reserve. Compared to those guys, I haven't had it bad at all.

Sorry for the disruption, kudos on the grace you've shown here sharing it with us.

On a lighter note, there's an excellent chance that I very nearly gave myself a trip flare enima doing a mad scramble up that very slope in an ice storm one night about 14 years ago. Set it, and got the d@%^ wire caught up on my boot. Very close to browned 'em when I realized the flare was coming up the hill with me. Spent a few cold weeks in Yakima, cow patties, scrub and hard weather, far as the eye could see.

Spectre, I am genuinely bummed at this news... Been in the back of my mind since you posted. Best of luck over there.
