Hi

My name is Andrew and I'm a computer gaming geek. I've been involved in computer-based games and game consoles longer than I have been into knives having started in the mid 1980s with the Atari game console and Commodore 64. I am 34 now and these days I really feel old for this hobby, especially when I walk in to the internet cafes and get my sorry arse beaten by 15 year olds on Counterstrike.

My favourite game of all time: Koei's Romance of the Three Kingdoms (ROTK). Still have version 3 on my PC. Sparked my interest in ancient history when I followed up by reading the book, then read the other Chinese literary classic: Water Margins (Shui Hu Shuan).

Let's hear your say :)

I just asked you this question and you never answered!!!

My son and I need your expert advice. We've liked Doom, Hexen, Heretic and Heretic ll, and Diablo. Someone told us that Max Payne was the greatest game of all but we find it silly with the unneccesary slo mo violence. We like plots, mystic stuff, messes to get out of of, things to explore.
What should we be looking at for a game for our PC? We also have Xbox.

thanks

Have you ever played Myst? or the sequel Riven? Lots of great graphics and some very hard (for me anyway) puzzles. Lots of places to explore too.

It is an old game but maybe worth checking out.

Another classic game I liked alot was Quake. The sound track by Nine Inch Nails was awesome!

If you have a computer that's up to it(don't think the console version sare out yet, least, not xbos) look for Painkiller. ANother good splatter them all type game. Far Cry and Halo get old. Unreal Tournament 2004 is only fun in multiplayer(for my taste). Same for Battlefield 1942. Alien Vs. Predator 2 was pretty good isngle player, and a blast multiplayer with people ya know(used to play that at work after hours). Call of Duty is still very good. Freedom Fighters is rather 80s cliche, but can be fun(Russians win the cold War and invade New York, you're a plumber forced into role of patriot and have to fight back :) It's Red Dawn on your PC, well, kinda ;)

Far Cry is my current first person shooter. Not best I've played, but graphics are pretty. ANother game that requires a rather seriuos system though, like Painkiller.

I'm a very big gamer, but mostly slower strategy games, and some flight sims like IL2. My big game for the past 4 years is the Combat Mission series, it is a simultaneous-turn-based tactical game set in WWII. Very detailed and realistic.

My new passion is Unreal World, a very old DOS style game based on the Rogue engine. The object is to survive in the wilds of Finland in the iron age. It is a very wide-open game where you can do almost anything.

etp- I have a Dell 4200 purchased this last Dec with a memory and speed upgrade. Don't know anything more than that. As for splatter- my son and I like adventure more than shoot em up.

Munk, you probably have but I want to make sure---you've played Diablo 2 and Diable 2 Lord of Destruction, right? Only asking because that's one of my favorite game worlds of all time.

Uhm, yes, there is one more level they added that I haven't played- added after Diablo was defeated.

Diablo is not my favorite. It combines the shopping urge with the typical sword and sorcery. Not all characters are created equal, though.

And lastly, if you miscue a computer key near the end, you can lose all the goodies you have laying around by your chest- this has happened to me twice and is catastrophic. I have a poor necromancer without a hope in hell of killing diablo- he lost the best sword he ever had.

I don't like the absence of a true save feature. If you save, you must go back and rekill every one on every level to arrive at where you were before.

the game is maddenly frustrating.

One of my favorite things was to go back and beat the heck out of that mean lady in the catacombs.

The first time I went through the Tower, to kill some evil queen or another, I must say, I was scared!!!! I'm not kidding. My heart was pounding.

I play a lot of StarCraft and the expansion Brood Wars. Great stratigy games, both in single player and Multiplayer modes.

One of the best Fantisy games of all time is Ultima 4. Well, the whole Ultima series. 1 threw 5 will run on a 10MHz 286 CPU with only 640KB memory. IBM AT class computers. 1 threw 7 are DOS games and great fun! :D Another oldy but goody is The Bards Tale 1 threw 3. And Can't forget Betrayal at Krondor Enhanced CD version. Talk about a cool RPG game. If you can find some of them and get them to work on your new computer, I'd recommend you do. Lots of fun and not much gore if any.

My nephew had Diablo 2 on when I was over at my aunts house. I didn't like it at first but it grew on me :) . Wish I had DSL or else I would get it.

Diablo 2 is my all time favorite, also try Fallout, its cool as well post-nuke war Mad Max type game...

has anyone played final fantasy?

I'll keep fallout in mind but I really want another sword and sorcery game. I've walked several characters through to the end of Diablo and need to find something else. I wish there were a Heretic 3

myst = "old game"...? :(

?!?

I remember when that came out and some friends were playing it and we were all falling off our chairs because of the amazing 3D simulation and "surround sound" effects....

A couple of summers ago I finished up Dragon Warrior 4 using an NES emulator on my laptop....what a ride!

I wish I could somehow get 5-7 (even in Japanese, I wouldn't care - still would be fun). Wasn't as big of a hit in the USA....

Played the first one looooong time ago....It's really one of the only video games I've ever liked. Does that say something about me?

I can't handle the crazy 3D stuff they have nowadays....too realistic for me. I don't want to be there, I just want to imagine being there....somehow that's more powerful for me.

Anyway, once I found out you could emulate the NES games on a PC, I got all 4 and went through them back-to-back....drove my wife crazy...:D....I had a folder with all my notes carefully recorded and would carry it with me in my briefcase...

Yes, my friends, this was a level 5 game addiction.

Anyway, thankfully once the games were beat....I could finally rest and haven't picked it back up since.

Sure wish there was something else out there as compelling, challenging, cohesive and simple-minded as the Dragon Warrior series. Something about playing it just eases the senses. Fits my way of thinking very well. Those who played know what I mean. ;)

I've been told that Baldur's Gate is a good one for "my type"...but I'm quite reluctant to pick it up.....any suggestions, guys?

Campaign(Single Player) has gotten old, but Multiplayer is truly a great way to spend hours killing your friends. However, the story is fun and well crafted and should give months of entertainment. I've been involved in a few 10+ person smackdowns and felt drained at the end of the evening. Sneaking up behind a sniper and smacking him on the back of the head with your gunbutt is almost the ultimate thing to do to an opponent. My favorite is to affix a plasma grenade to someones ass and watch, gleefully, as they jump around trying to shake it off. Of course the good ones will charge you and attempt to hug you until it detonates. Halo 2 comes out in November. I'm taking that week off from work!

Munk,
I won't try to convert you but I will tell you that if you sign on to Blizzard's page and download the newest game patch (there've been like 10 of them) all little glitches have been taken care of.

Advice on baulders gate. Get it. Very fun. If you have multiple computers set up, or know the ip address of a friend then you can skip the npc party members and just play with friends. Also try the sequals, and neverwinter nights. Neverwinter is good because there is so many downloadable modules (campaings).
Something that I have seen missing from the list is arx fatalis. It is a couple of years old, its 3d, and has one of the most inovative magic systems to date. In order to cast spells you must use the mouse to draw the runes on the screen. there are even some spells that you must figure out yourself. the manual lists about 40 but leaves 10 for the user to experiment to find, my favorite is "create-fire-area" makes a small wall of fire (I think). Oh and dont kill every one the first time through. Yes you can kill EVERYONE. This makes for a light distraction and is only usefull once in a while, like when you are done with the goblins and want the money you traded earlier for diamonds.
I got bored of the final fantasy teen hero formula. However I did like Legend of Dragoon. Probably because you can tap the button at the right time to boost an attack and make 2 - 5 hit combos.
For a slower strategy game look at the pharaoh and ceasar lines. they are fun city builders, my dad still forgets to go to bed until 3 am when playing them. Cataclysm is also very good. 3d strategy in space.
I like games.

T1pani- Hey, you know how much I respect you- you're a doppleganger for my firearms selections-

I was just looking over the Diablo series- I played Diablo ll till killing Diablo- I never played the expansion pack. There is a Battle pack with everything for about 34 bucks shipped. What say you?

Also, this new one, Warcraft lll, the battle chest- with two games- this good?

Keep in mind I was as bad as Pen- I disapeared for over two months- because you couldn't save and had to fight your way to some level before quitting.

let me know
