OT: Prayers for Dad

Surprisingly, neither of your homes smelled like opium dens. My only real experience with incense is during my twenties, involving bongs and loud music.

Dad was ready at 5 am on his day, and through at 4pm. today I'll try and find out more. Each day without incident is hope.

"You should have the right to hang out, watch the birds, putter around and watch the desert." I'd told him. He was worried he would go.

I know prayers work. I dont know why. There must be some universal Love life force factor science hasn't figured.

They put a ring around one of his heart valves. Maybe more, but these things come out in drips and drabbles in my family. Called mom- she was defrosting a freezer and wouldn't talk long.
I suspose for some of us defrosting is like a shuttle launch.

Called ICU- Dad's doing fine but is confused. Hopefully he'll come out of it.

Talked to DAd- he was confused but still Dad. Now Josh, if you're reading this, wouldn't it be something if he'd whispered into the phone- "Wait till the nurses see those godamned bats."

He did say they wanted him to do some godamned thing. The 'godamns are a part of Dad's world when he is stressed. When I was young it was the only way to cuss- the rest was seen as profane. Now I live with a woman who doesn't care as much about the F word, but really gets upset if she hears the Lord's name taken in vain.

Munk, I think the good Dr. Thompson would agree that it's probably for the best that your dad isn't seeing the bats right now. In his weakened condition, it could be too much. Better wait till he's fully recovered ;)

Glad your Dad is swearing again, Munk. :) Always a good sign.

When I first moved to the country, I met a retired farmer, BIG ole Swiss guy named Louie, who sort of became my directory of local goods and services. I'd call Louie and he'd give me the history, school record, and proficiency capability of any trades or craftsman in the community(ies), AND directions to their places of business. (You go past where the cheese factory used to be. ) I still remember his hands, big as pie plates, and scarred with 80 some years of hard farming.

But Louie had a speech impediment.

He couldn't say ONE sentence in a row without including as a: verb, noun, adverb, adjective, prefix, suffix, interjection, exclamation, etc....some variant of the word "**ck." Not ONE sentence.

He wasn't a vulgar guy, nor a profane one....but somehow over his lifetime, mostly farming alone, he'd gotten into this speech pattern--and it was locked in.

Gone now, but still with me. "**cking good man." :D

Glad to hear the good news, Munk. Hang in.

More smoke going up for all.

As an aside, reputedly during an illness, Woodrow Wilson ( I think it was ) was ill and Henry Cabot Lodge ( whom Wilson despised, and vice versa ) led a delegation of senators to the White House. On arrival, Lodge told Wilson the Senate was praying for him. Wilson's answer was an interrogatory " Which way? ".

Glad to hear your dad seems to be doing OK, so far, munk.

I have to admit to being forget-stuff-that-happened-drunk a couple of times, and to ingesesting some substances that have large effects on brain chemistry. But for some reason, I still think that I had some measure of control of those situations.

I've never had surgery (or any other procedure) under general anethesia, and I quite frankly would find the prospect utterly terrifying.

BTW, Roger got a perhaps unwelcome reprieve, they put off the operation due to an apparent mis-diagnosis of cancer.

Keeping my fingers crossed on all accounts.

True. One of the first signs of recovery from depression is having the energy to get angry - where there'd previously been no energy for anything at all. ;)
