Looking to purchase a semi-automatic rifle and I trust hogs taste. For the sake of sanity, assume that we are going to ignore the madness that is going on right now and that I'll be able to get one for a sane price rather than the ridiculous gouging that is going on.

You have a max budget of about 2000$ and realistically want to spend more like 1200. Don't factor in the cost of ammunition and additional mags, but feel free to make note of them if they are an exceptional factor. I happen to like both 5.56 and 7.62 so try to keep it within those calibers. Also - I'm more than happy with iron sights and minimal gadgets. Really don't care for gadgets, they are just additional weight to me.

Thanks ladies and gents.

Since I live in Cali Im pretty much limited to bolt action rifles (for the most part). I bought a Savage Hunter for about 800$. Very good quality for the price. But for the money you are looking to spend you could prob move up a couple notches. And it leaves you a lot of extra cash for the very expensive scope you are going to attach to it.

What you want to do with the rifle is really the "key" to a recommendation that makes sense ...

Simplicity in a .308 with iron sights ... a FN FAL would be my choice. In a 5.56 it depends on how compact you need the rifle to be ... I like a HK G33 for vehicle carry and a Canadian Diemaco AR15 for other uses.

With the market as it is now, I think your best option is to find some shops and see if anything is available.

FN FNAR. Basically, a Browning BAR(the modern semi-auto, not the old machine gun) The only negative I've read is the disassembly is tedious.

Or maybe a Armalite AR10.

A lot of the advantages of ARs are related to military scenario. I love ARs they are great fun to shoot.
A M1A can still be had for about your price range. Mags are kind of expensive. I really like the feel of a wood stock. It also has a lot of American history.
FNs have a number of advanced features and parts are plenty. Mag were dirt cheap a month ago. FNs have not gone up that much as of now. Subject to massive change.
I would say pick you calibre first then pick the gun.
I am chasing around a M1A now myself.
Good luck and shop around.

I would say your best buy right now is a FN type rifle.....Also, you can hunt with a .308. I would think most state would not let you hunt with .223.

I have a 5.56 from Stag arms and a 7.62 from Armalite. I love both and both have served me well. If I had to only have one Id probably just have a 5.56 for run and gun close engagements. If I need to stretch my legs and shoot distance theres always a bolt action rifle that can be had for a reasonable price and then customized. If you were to go Savage which I do like their action, trigger, and out of the box accuracy I would drop it in a Bell & Carlson stock or one of the many other aftermarket stocks that you can find for specific models of many bolt action rifles. I personally think Bell & Carlson are maybe a little more bang for the buck and they can be DIY swaps.

But like Peter said pick the caliber based on your needs then choose the gun. I think we can give ya some better input from that too.

You are going to have a hard time finding any semi auto rifle right now. You need to see what if any you can find for sale and then pick out of those.

Avoid the NFA registration and get a good standard bolt rifle or the rugger scout rifle in .308 which takes M1A mags.
