Been daydreamin about a major change of plans in my life. As much as I love the Blue Ridge mountains , somethings drawing me Northwest.
Could be that my feet have been planted for too long in one place and I need a Big change. Enjoyed my travels as a squid :D

If anybody that lives out there would share their experiance in Montana. Northwest Montana that is, I'd like to hear about it.

Mark I live in eastern Montana and the best advice i can give you is live in eastern montana so you can afford to visit western montana. That is where all the Kaliforinians seem to be moveing to and it has pushed the cost of living so high us working people can't afford to move there anymore.

All I know about Montana is that I buy wheat from there and grind it up to make bread. You cannot get finer wheat anywhere in the world ! I've also had Montana Pronghorn that has been feeding on wheat that's worth eating unlike the sagebrush eating pronghorn that's terrible.

Many Montanans claim that they have two seasons, winter and the 4th of July. Sometimes it snows on the 4th.

Western Montana is getting to be a lot like the Pacific NW and Colorado-Californicated. They have driven the price of real estate so high that people who work for a living can't afford to live there. Colorado went down the tubes 30 years ago.

Aside from that, it is great country, along with the other Rocky Mountain states. The mountains aren't old worn down things like those back east and there are still great empty spaces.

Mark,
As I used to tell my good friend Rob Simonich, Rest his Soul, that is the place where men are men and sheep are terrified...:)

That's way too far to drive for a Hammer-In.

I heard about this place, Mark. They say it is in the US, but you would have to check.
Does that help a little? :D

I've done a lot of looking into Montana over the years Mark. Theres still inexpensive land to be had but one thing to look for are the water rights. This is something that doesn't really occur to us here but is a big deal there.

The Dakotas are good prospects also. The bottom line is that you want to go somewhere that is uncomfortable for the yuppies and soccer moms.

I keep hoping that an A$$hole plague will hit and thin them down some but until then, you just have to try to stay a step ahead.

Don't know about Montana but I spent some time in Wyoming. It was a great place to visit, about a year, but it was good to get home.
When are you looking to go?

Larry

Mark, I've always said that if I win the big lotto,I would have a place in Montana, and a place in the Shenandoah Valley. They don't call it Big Sky for nothing out there.Like the others said, stay in the rural areas, the resorts and cities are just the west coast moved inland.

Montana! Oh man, I was hoping to be able to see your ugly butt about once a year... just kidding.

I too was looking for a change at one time in my little lief. I moved to Oregon for almost 2 years. Man, all I can say is better have a job to go to if moving to a quite area or move to a city so you can work. The NW is awsome. HUGE mountains and truely Gods Country. You wont regret it if you can work the job thang out.

But hey Mark ---- Where am I now and happy as a lark? The South my friend :D Have you gone through any of the North Ga. / N.C mountains near Franklin? Wow is all I can say. Different from the NW but still as beautiful.

It may just be a passing dream. My Father was a school teacher before he retired, so he had all Summer to ride his motorcycle all over the country. He was absolutely in love with the NW. He had already bought his retirement property down South and I think he regrets it now. Not that it's not nice where he is, he just didnt follow his dream.
I dont know where Deb and I will end up or when for sure when we will go anywhere. It all depends on her Mother. She looked to be fading fast but now she's fighting it God bless her. 83 and still mean as a snake.

We are going to take at least a 2 weeks vacation this spring/summer and have a look around out west. What the heck maybe 3 weeks.

Oh , Brian I put the skinner template in the mail yesterday.

If you can look at the Cascades Mountain range in Washington State. AWSOME!!!!
Also look around Washington State or Oregon. Very nice!! :D

Mark if you do come through montana next summer let me know we can meet up. as far as washington and oregon i have friends who live in both places and they hate it but they work for big companys and that is where the job is. I still think Eastern to central Montana is the place to be but now that we have a democrat takeing over the governers office in Jan. i don't know. At least we still don't have a sales tax.

Mark, I lived in Missoula Montana for 8 years and I will say this. It is wonderful place to live but also to starve to death in. Too many people living there and working in Kaliforina or other high paying jobs. Make sure you have a good paying job before you go. Wyoming is a great place but the weather is 9 months winter and 3 months late fall. Gib

My brother moved to Dillan Montana about 20 years ago. He loves it there, Its a cold place to live for me. You should check it out on the way to the Oregon Show in Eugene Oregon in early April and we can shake hands. Im a member of the Montana, Oregon and Washington knife clubs. Around here people say Idaho is the place to live.

I spent most of my life in the Boise Valley of South Western Idaho. It used to be a grest place to live. Unfortunately it was discoverd by the Kalifornistan refugees and has suffered mightily for it. :(
If I could have found a good paying job else where in the state I would NEVER have left it.
I moved to South Western Washington almost 7 years ago. I do like it here. The fishing is FANTASTIC, and the elk hunting good---but I sure do miss what Idaho USED to be. If I could find a good paying job in Idaho I would go back (but NOT to the Boise Valley) in a heart beat.
I suppose that it is as the late Jack O'Conner (Outdoor Life shooting editor from many years ago) once said about his move to North Idaho-----"no matter how far you go, or how fast you go to get there you just can't out run the bums from outer slobbovia!"
