OT Things We Don't Trust In Each Other

I don't trust a majority of Americans to understand the Second Amendment.

I don't trust that we'll ever figure out if Drilling in Anwar is OK, if hunting Mountain lions is OK, or if the fires in Southern Calif had anything to do with not logging or trimming the forest. I don't trust we'll ever figure that out. It's too hard. We have to save animals and leave trees alone, you see...even though the entire habitat burned to the ground and most of those animals died...

I think about 20% of you will believe until you die that the 2000 election was 'Stolen' in Florida, or that the 'Black Vote' was suppressed. That this is only slightly more insane than the plot to falsify the Moon Landing matters not at all.

I do think reasonable men can disagree about Iraq. That's complex and problematic. But I don't think a majority will ever figure out that it is nearly as big an offense to take offense as it is to give it. That's too hard. Asking, "Who do I think I am to take offense?" is too hard. It would mean not imposing your ego upon the world. It would mean accepting humility. Naw- not us. How dare you do that to me.

If I am murdered, it makes no difference to me if that occured because I was Black, a Lesbian, smelled bad, or voted Republican. Codifying special consequences or special handling of protected classes of persons impairs the creation of a society where all are equal not only before the Law, but to each other. But I don't expect 50% of you to understand that, especially if it is your plate being piled high under whatever cultural 'flavor of the month' is being rewarded, whatever pet cause temporarily in vogue.

I do agree, however, that if I was murdered because I was a Lesbian, and you can prove I was, than we need to notify medical science imediately that the next Evolutionary step has been breached.

I don't expect the manufacturers of Radio Flyer to figure out that if they make their famous Red Wagon out of thinner metal that falls apart quickly under use, that consumers will figure that out and stop buying Radio Flyers. I'm not sure if the Consumers will figure it out either.

I don't expect to ever get Yogurt common on the Market with 5% milk fat again. It tasted too good. We can't have that. I do expect to live in a world where when I ask for cream in my coffee at a Restaruant, that I'll be served 2% milk.

I trust we will never stop homogenizing milk, even though that counts for raised chorlesteral levels. Once we start something idiotic, it's very hard for us to stop.

We live in a world where we must choose between two usually extreme views. Thus, any logging is killing the habitat. Likewise, too often when we allow public graising, that means the grass is munched down to the soil. We can't hunt Mountain Lions because if we do, all the Mountain lions will die. er... something like that.

We can't have nativity scenes in public or Christian displays, but some little known religious observation from the Congo of 200 years ago is quaint. If we allowed the Christans a display, they would take over the world. Oops- this goes back to the last paragraph- we don't find solutions because we're forced to choose from two extremes. We live in an either or world.

Well, that's about all I can think of at the moment. Feel free to add your own. You might add you don't trust anyone to make a list like this because their own pet peeves get into the mix, and that's certainly true enough.

We just don't trust each other period, plain and simple. I don't trust you, and you don't trust me. This Halloween in most of the US our children will stay home, and not go door to door for candy. We'll attend special safe parties and events, and watch the Disney channel on TV.

Theoretically speaking, the middle is "fly-over country."
The middle is just a place you pass through from one extreme to the other.
(Why is common sense so uncommon ?)

I do understand what you are getting at . It is the way you chose to get there that may be putting the bumps in the road for you .While there will always be bumps in the road I find that inteligent people sometimes need to step back from their intelect and just be animals for a while . I don,t know if you prefer to walk, swim, climb or crawl but fresh air gives fresh perspective . Anyway thats what works for me . I am fortunate that at least for the moment I can get out in the woods every second day or so and enjoy not being so much me for a while .

You know I just reread that post and smiled. you know why? Because I realized that if Andy Rooney read that he would have smiled--knowing that his torch was passed on.

I found that to be very "rooney-esque"--in a good way ;)

Because of what we might do with them. A sincere lack of trust in the goodness of man. Seems like a method of governmental control over free man to me.

I actually don't trust the goodness of man.

But then, I don't trust his "badness" either. Dunno that I actually believe much in either one.

I trust his survival instinct, even if misplaced. Man will do what he thinks he needs to do to survive, even if he doesn't understand his impulse.

WOW! A break in the hectic schedule and time to read the forum and look what comes up. Trust.....a dying art in the world today. There are lots of things going on that are cause for concern, but we all need to step back and look at the stars a little more often......even when it's 110 degrees at midnight  If we all give up on the goodness of man we are in for a real problem. We hear so much about all the bad guys, but nothing much about all the good done. I wonder what would happen if for 1 week all the news channels and papers only published good things that people did. I wonder if people would then try to be good to get their name in the news instead of the opposite. I mean, really, if you look at the ratios of good to bad it's still pretty high on the good end....right???? Just a thought....

Me....I'm mulling over buying 40 acres up in the White Mountains, putting a manufactured home on it and planting some strategic patches of corn and getting my hunting license. Then I can invite the whole crowd out for hunting season and have a great big party.......now that sounds like a real deal :D I'll make sure to have plenty of tent room and extra potties.....I can see it now...."what's that little house over there.....it's the modern day outhouse....." ;) :D

H.P. Lovecraft once stated that he had not observed goodness or evil in the world, but an abundance of horror.
That's how I feel most days. I don't trust most people to percieve the nature of our culture...or the lack of culture...and lead meaningful, deliberate lives without fear.

I don't trust people to realize that democracy isn't the best government for every society. I believe in the equality of all people as humans, but I refuse to accept that people are equal in intelligence, judgement, and character. It's madness to give everyone an equal share of the decision-making process when clearly not all rightly percieve the outcome of their actions. I lived in a community of 300 persons for over 3 years, and the community was governed by a direct democracy. It was fun for a while, until I realized that hardly anything of merit gets accomplished because people would rather feed their egos than step aside in favor of more capable and motivated leaders.

Ooh, now the pet peeve:
I don't trust people to realize that PC speech and thought is an Orwellian wet dream. You limit the language that can be used to discuss certain topics and it becomes impossible to have meaningful dialogue. Besides, one cannot avoid offending others by censoring their own speech...and if you could, why would you want to? A lady came into my work the other day, and long story short, she said "I feel like such a retard." I chuckled, and she immedietly put her hand over her mouth and said "Oh no, I'm not supposed to say that. My daughter would KILL me." Don't worry lady, I won't call the thought police. But the thought police aren't needed here, because we keep each other in check better than they ever could. That, to me, is horror.

The reason people are afraid of the 2nd amendment and want a billion laws to protect us from everything is that they don't trust their neighbor. We no longer expect responsibility from people.
As for the yogurt, I have some "organic" creamtop I picked up at the market. I'll try to figure out what the fat content is. It sure is yummy though. I always take a spoonful of the creamtop before I stir it up.

Munk's posts are always a worthwhile read. :)
Lesson I take away from this one is, the more civilized we get, the less civilized we are.

I'm disappointed with you. I'm a member of a minority that was once so dispised that it was pretty much open season on us. People would shoot at me and otherwise try to murder me, but still I resisted the 'hate laws' designed to protect me. The laws got passed anyway. Suddenly the streets were quiet when there used to be a cacophony of insults. People let me into their stores, and gave me jobs when they would have turned me away before.

Years have passed, and most metropolitan areas are OK for my people, there are rural areas that need to catch up a bit, but wen they do, I'd like to see the anti-discrimination laws repealed. I want to be equal under the law, but I'm grateful for the temporary boost, it's really not much to ask compared to the legal slaughter of my brothers and sisters that existed before.

It is your right to be disapointed in me. Afirmative action laws had their time- and that time is past. They were a good solution for a time.

As for hate crimes- what possible difference would it make to me if I were murdered because I was smart, white, limped, or had an ATM card?

There are murders that 'count' more than others- of a child, or with torture or special circumstance. That is as it should be. Bigotry is not special circumstance.

munk

That's what I used to think too.Trust me, it's way more personal when your assailant tells you in explicit terms exactly why he's killing you. The hate crime profile is way different than the 'normal' murder too.

With you on the high-fat yoghurt though.

When do we stop it? I used to stutter very badly- still do. You don't think I paid a price for that? Rusty had a hare lip- you don't think he knew prejudice? My brother is married to a black women- do you think my family is prejudiced? It isnt about 'prejudice' or even being fair- it is about letting classes of people remain 'disadvantaged'. We cannot reward disadvantage. Free government cheese begets generations of people who rely upon Free Government cheese. Got it? This is because I love you, not because I hate.

There is not a living person who has not experienced prejudice. It is ridiculous to conclude the worst kind is about skin or even sex- it goes deep.
I'm not sure Ugly People of America shouldn't rise up and demand affirmative action- or fat people, or people whose IQ is less than 105. Conversely, everyone with an IQ over 180 may have an argument that you and I are not entitled to their jobs. Where does it stop?

munk

Morgane, it's not right when folks are discriminated against for no damn reason (skin or eye color, etc). I'm sorry that's ever been your experience. :(

We discriminate daily, sometimes rightfully- I don't want the guy with bad hygiene working in my restaurant, for instance- sometimes not. I don't know about Canada, but in America, we have what are known as "BFOQs". In other words, some jobs require certain characteristics. A fat person- or even just a large person- will lose if he tries to sue because no-one wants him as a jockey.
A person over 200 lbs (I think that was the line) cannot expect to be hired to work on an airliner (unless there are others in that weight class in similar position). People who can't lift x lbs over their head cannot take certain jobs.

I am for qualified people getting the jobs, and I care less what their color or religion is, as long as it doesn't interfere with their job. I would like to believe that's how most Americans- and shucks, most people worldwide, feel.

I would add bald americans (me being one myself) to that group....
