Other Gear (music)

I used to play percussion instruments as a kid, now I want to learn to play harmonica. Any suggestions?

I like Lee Oskar any key . B flat is my all around fav for tunes.. Forget Twinkle Twinkle Little Star , or Mary Had a Little Lamb. I reccommend learninig Bad Moon a Rising by CCR. Only four notes played on the four and five holes. That song is ridiculosly easy to play.

Heres a link for that tune.

So all I know how to do is bang on a djembe and play the didj (no circular breathing Yet, been practicing and annoying the fiancée)

Here is some music that I like to listen to, to get me inspired when I'm outdoors. I'll listen to it when I'm wheelin or on my way down to the swamp.

Sometimes one gets the primal bug, maybe u know what I'm talking about. Here are a few fitting songs and fun songs themed towards it!!

Brent Lewis: Spirit hunter
Spirit Hunter
An interesting mix using many traditional instruments such as a didjeridoo and african djembes. Some faster paced songs on here are great.
Notable song: Catch that wild man

David and Steve Gordon: Sacred Spirit drums
Sacred spirit drums
Uses native american flutes and heavy bassier drums. It almost feels like it could send you into a trance.
Notable songs: Shaman's Dance

Speaking of Trance:
My favorite group on the face of the earth
Juno Reactor.
JUNO REACTOR
I understand many people don't like techno, and thats fine and dandy. But this guy has some songs that are just mind-blowing. He enlisted the help of Zulu drummer group Amapondo for a CD called Shango . I highly highly reccommend it.
Hard and powerful beats, like the song Hule lam are perfect if you are getting chased by an irate boar.
From the album Bible of dreams come an extremely popular song in the techno circle, called CONGA FURY and Swamp thing I love listening to swamp thing while I'm out snake hunting, feels good. If you guys like them alot, email me, I can hook you up with some tracks. There new stuff doesn't have the jungle-esque influence, I like the past stuff more.

John Serrie: Spirit Keepers Uses native american flutes, very pretty sounds Great while you are making trap triggers

Last of the mohicans soundtrack
A very powerful soundtrack with work by enya. I love this CD
soundtrack
you can probably find it in the used cd bin.

Don't like these so much?
How about some Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash: song: When the man comes around
A popular song in two "survival" themed movies; The hunted, and dawn of the dead. Its an apocolyptic tale of judgement day, but with Cash's classic sound and strumming. I like it a lot! You might too.
When the man comes around clip

Lynyrd Skynyrd: Swamp music
A fun classic rock song about a guy and his hound dog, going to the swamp. I've got really stuck in a mud hole in my jeep while wheelin to this song :P I stay away from it when I wheel, it is dangerous.
Swamp Music

Don't feel like buying CDs?
Try Live365

an internet radio website, they have radio for everything
I really like:
K-bear
A native american themed station. It plays native american songs and tribal chants, as well as some good country music as well as some awesome classic rock.

Music and Nature
An interesting station that analyzes the bond between music and nature. Has some weird stuff on it but its fun

Naturesong
One relaxing station. Plays natural sounds, like seascapes, birds in the morning, all sorts of relaxing sounds. Great backround music when reading or at work, even when sleeping!

innovaworld
ethnic, international, tribal, folk, traditional Native American . Makes you feel all cultured and stuff.

bluegrass radio and how can you resist some good ol mountain bluegrass

]Some of these choices are odd, even hippyish, some may like em, some won't.
Post up what you like to listen to to get you feeling outdoorsy! No making fun!

I play a late '60s Fender Mustang that has seen some playing. It's got zero original finish and I refinished a crappy refinish of a previous owner long ago. Not much value on the collector's market, but it's a player, even with all of those miles.

Here's a pic of the first position. Look at those divots!!!

I play it through a Nau Engineering 2x6V6 amp that's basically a Fender Blackface Deluxe clean channel and a Tweed Bassman dirty channel. John Nau is a local amp guru who fixes most of the broken amps for the shops all around Rochester. He knows how to make an amp and how not to make one given the countless amps he's had to fix over the years. I'd post a pic but I'm in the process of putting it in a new enclosure made from some black walnut I had sawn up a number of years ago.

I'm also fixing up an old Harmony from the late '50s. It needs an overhaul and a new fretboard. I had a nice piece of ebony laying around and it's going on there one of these days.

I also make my own effects pedals from schematics and layouts on the web and have built dozens. It's not too hard to do and if you make more than a few, it really pays off. Here are a few I've done.

I'm also gonna build a Marshall 18 watt kit and an Acoustic 360 bass preamp kit soon. I've just got to find the time...

Oh and I picked up this critter at a yard sale. It needs a new head and some parts, but it's sure to make some noise someday.

Hard to see except in certain parts, but the drumkit I was playing was a Tama Superstar birch with natural wood finish with DW 5000 double-bass pedal:
