Hi,

As you know our scouting group has had several fundraisers in the past year selling some extra Firesteels and Glowrings.

We still use the principle of sending payment after having received the goods and this has worked without a hitch for almost all transactions we did, this just shows how good a bunch of people Forumites are :D

We have run however into one not so nice person, Mr. Randy Herring, who scr.w.d us for 4 Glowrings and used a most elaborate way to deceive us.

He used an address were a person lives with the same last name as himself somehow he managed to get the Glowrings we send to that address as he confirmed to us that he received the Glowrings that we send to that address.

Payment didn’t arrive and when we asked about it some vague email arrived that it supposedly was send from his work but he would check.

Then silence and we never got an reply back anymore to our subsequent emails (at least 5).

Upon doing some checking with the help off a fellow forumite I got the telephone number at that address + the persons name who lived there (same last name other first name)

Also the address where Mr. R. Herring now seems to live with an telephone number.

I reached the person living at the address we send the Glowrings to and he was shocked, he was a 70 year old man living there for the last 18 months he didn’t know who Randy Herring was (strange but could be true he sounded honest).

I haven’t been able to reach R. Herring at his new address, but him not replying to all our emails and the info I got from the “old man” leads me to believe that one should be extremely carefull when doing business with Mr. R Herring.

He used randyherring49@hotmail.com as an email address.

Be warned, best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera

I'm sorry to hear of your losses, Piet. I'm wondering if he had a forum alias? Is it someone who actually is a member of BFC or someone who just lurks?

Hi,

If I'm correctly informed his BF name was "Rude Water" but I did a search and saw that he hasn't posted anymore since at least one and a half year or so.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

This is what makes me mad. There are only a handful of people who are trusting enough to do business this way. Piet is one of them. I have my glow rings and he has is dough.

I know there has been debates over who is risking more. The buyer or the seller.

When I do deals, you do it my way or no way. We both send our packages at the same time with a tracking #. Then email each other with the #'s.

IMHO I think the guy sending the cash is most vulnerable. A knife(or anything else) is only worth what a person can sell it for.

But the way things are, this will probably never change anything.

I am truly sorry Piet.

Piet, i know that you are a very trusting man but have you considered that the man you talked to was lying to you? Almost same name with an exact address . May have been his modus operandi for all we know.

I find this particularly disturbing since this individual has the same surname as me  (it's just an unfortunate coincidence…I can assure you that there's no relation between us). I've never dealt with Piet, but it's clear from his presence here on BFC that he's a man of impeccable integrity…it's infuriating that someone would take advantage of his trust. I don't know if anything can be done about the situation, but I agree with copfish's recommendation to report this to the Postal Inspectors.

And Piet, please send me an e-mail if your scouting group has any more of these fundraisers…I'd really like to try to do something to redeem the name "Herring". Most of the folks who bear this name aren't thieves (although "Rude Water" certainly seems to fall into this category based on his actions). I really hope this guy gets his comeuppance…

Hi guys,

Thanks for the moral support from all of you, again Forumites are nice people.

Jim, please accept our appologies it was not our intention to give the name Herring a bad name, and as you said you are NOT the person that we have problems with.

I was able to reach a telephone number last night and left a rather lengthy message on the answering machine leaving my (our) e-mail address for Mr. R.H. to respond to.

To my surprise  I received an email from the person in question in which he explained the situation of not having replied anymore.
It seems he got "laid off" just about the time that he received the Glowrings, lost his emails because his email account got wiped, had no computer access, etc.
He said "A guy in my building told me that you had called for me" so he traked me down on the BF.

To make a long story short, he wants to fullfill his part of the deal and asked me for my (our) address.
I have send it to him, the only strange thing it's to the same hotmail email address as we've send all other emails  but we hope for the best.

I will keep you posted on how things work out.

Again, thanks for all the kind words we appreciate them very much.

Also Jim, we want to make clear that YOU ARE NOT the "Herring" that we had problems with and we appreciate your offer very much.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera

No apologies are necessary, Piet…I realize that you weren’t trying to insinuate anything about people with “fishy” surnames :). I just overreacted a little when I saw the name of the person with whom you were having problems. I’ve been caught up in cases of mistaken identity before, and I’m probably a little paranoid .

I’m hoping that I was wrong in my prior assessment of Mr. Herring’s behavior and that he’ll be able to make good on his commitment…maybe he just let things get away from him for a while (I’m trying to be tolerant and forgiving :p). Hopefully this situation will be resolved to everyone’s satisfaction soon…

Hi Guys,

A little update, after promisses, promisses and according to Mr Randy Herring returned mail he supposedly resend the payment already 3 weeks ago and again nothing received.
Reaching him by email is like expecting to win the lottery, it's (almost) impossible.

Our advise, keep away from dealing with him it cost us $40 and several phone calls etc.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera

Post the worthless POS's info on the board. Chances are a decent forumite resides close to the maggot and would pay a visit. If not, an email to the Postal Inspector might bring some action, they are great guys and love tossing maggots into the cell for Bubba to have some butt-time with.

That is not right... Piet, I have two Spyderco blades: One SS Endura combo blade and another SS Calypso Jr. plain blade. They are very lightly carried and the blade on the Endura has never been touched while the Calypso Jr. has been sharpened on a Sharpmaker and is scary sharp. Email me your address and let me know how to best get these to you and waste no more time on this guy. It's not cash (though if I had that I'd send that instead) but it should come quite close to covering your loss. Your effort to do business in a more than honest way should not go unrewarded and seeing that you do this for your Scouting Troop further emphasizes the point. I'll look forward to hearing from you and I'll have the blades in the mail by Friday and will send you email confirmation and tracking after sending them Global Priority.

Hope this helps a bit!

Shawn

PS: I don't know what's worse... Getting screwed on a deal or wasting valuable time trying to fix a hopeless situation with some moron stringing you along. Pathetic!

Piet, I am not sure if you are familiar with the term in American English "red herring", which is the same as chasing a ghost, it's not real or tangible.

No one else got this guy's R. Herring?

BTW, I still recall our conversation about the Al Mar SERE 3002 folder, my old email got wiped and I have not worked out how to access the conversations, plus lots else happened there. Let me get biz settled and I will contact you email about the SERE 3002 and we can work out money for the blade as well as a bit extra for the troop.

Parker

Bagheera,

E-mail me as to what these products are and I will buy some from you. I will also pay you for what the "parasite" R. Herring stole.

If you have no more, or the fundraiser has ended, tell me what you lost in $ and I will get you an International Money Order pronto!

Don't let the jerk change your view of doing business with us over here.

I am known here (bladeforums) and my word is true. Get me the e-mail and we'll get you squared.

Kinda funny Parker, I didn't pick up on that until you mentioned it and I use the term a few times a year.

Out.

They are these http://www.glowrings.com/ If ya dont have one, you should get one anyways. Theyre great fun, and its for a GREAT cause. Piet is a marvelous man, that deserves no less than honest customers. Ill help out with recouping losses as well.NW

Hi guys,

I (we) are overwhelmed by the nice words, offered support and advise offered by everyone of you.

Again, I (we) just wanted to warn you not to do business with the mentioned guy nothing else. It never was my (our) intention to get you guys into offering donnations/knives or even a short visit to the mentioned address which by the way seems to be the address that Mr. Herring now lives. He use to live somewhere else and that's were we send the Glowrings to but the person I spoke to on the phone who lives at that address doen't even know him he said. Still some other forumite knew that he used to live at that address also.

Guys, I really appreciate every "post" from you but please lets not forget the real world, we only lost $40 which although it hurts is nothing compared to what thousands of famnillies in the US are going through right now.
I'm carrying a deep scar on my brain from what happened, already a little over 3 weeks ago, in these hiddeous horrendous terrorist attacks on the WTC and Pentagon and the failed attempt with a 4th plain were some normal people decided not to let these terrorists do bad things with "their" plain and tried overmastering them and in doing them all lost their lives but saved countless others in doing so.

Please, we appreciate every one of your posts, but to those who are offering to make up for our loss please donate the money to a reputable fund for the families who have lost husband, sons, daughters in the September 11 terrorist attacks they will need it more then we will ever do as scouts.

Our prayers are with all of you,

Warmest scouting wishes from Holland,

Piet (Bagheera)

Piet,
You are an extremely honorable person from your posts and from your feedback as well as the way you do business. Your last post here is extraordinarily touching and brings us further toward what I hope will one day be a 'Global Community'. Your Scouts are fortunate to have you as a role model and Leader and by supporting your cause we support the global cause of peace by allowing your morals and ethics to enrich the lives of youngsters who will one day become great men like yourself.

The knives I mentioned are now on their way to you Global Priority. I was unable to buy tracking but I am sure they will get there safely! My best wishes to you and your Troop and hope these knives will enrich the experience for them.

Here's hoping you never have another deal go bad!

Shawn
