Anyone really excited about this one? The ergonomics look crazy good. I can't wait for it.
This and the Sage 5 are going to be my purchases for the end of the year :D

Ergo's aside it's quite expensive for a VG-10 Spyderco. Yes it has a compression lock.... But it's still VG-10. Not knocking VG-10, but it's not normally priced so high.

Yea the price is a little high. I guess I throw that up to the ss backspacer... still something I'm fiending for.

I got to admit when I first saw the Ouroboros I was very interested but a price tag of $170 ish make me hesitate a little, I may wait till one comes up for sale used.

I really love the design on this one but the price is definitely not right, IMO. They dropped the ball on this one, G10 and VG-10 for $170? This knife isn't even made in the US, Spyderco has knives that are made in the USA, have better materials, and are cheaper (Spyderco PM2, Military, Manix 2, Native 5, and even their S110V versions are cheaper, the exception being the Military in S110V at $173 (virtually the same price).

We can look at offerings from other companies too..You can get a BM 810-1401 or 710-1401 in M390 for $180, or a ZT0450 for $160 (full Ti, S35VN, ball bearing flipper), those are all made in the US too. The Spyderco Positron, a Taichung knife, is $170 and has S30V, CF handle scales, and is a ball bearing flipper.

A fair price for this knife would be, IMO, between $80-130.

Given its rather radical design, I'm guessing there was a lot of retooling involved which translates into a higher price tag. I doubt the margins are any higher on it than they are on any others.

That said, I won't be buying it specifically because of the price and the black g10. I just can't justify the expense on my end. Plus, I refuse to buy anymore black g10.

I was excited about it, but then I saw the price and my excitement somehow went away.

I was so excited when I learned about this knife. I'm not a VG10 fan...I mean, it's good entry-level stuff for sure...but I thought: 'Hey, it's VG10, it's a Seki City folder (+ all the good things...ergos, compression lock etc), and it should be affordable.' Well....it's not really. I think complaining about price is pretty pointless; at best, market demand might influence it to fall. I wonder how such a niche knife would sell at around the $80-110 price point, let alone $167, but time will tell I guess. I wanted to snag this and the upcoming ATR re-release but it seems I'll have to pass on the Ouroboros.

Felt like the thread needed a photo.

I dunno. I may still buy one and just have some scales made. It's the black g10 I take most issue with. I love VG-10.

I love the design of the knife, but I bought a sprint PM2 in M4 for less than that.... Can't justify the price even a little.

I don't really get the design. It looks like a skinner? I couldn't be less interested in this knife. I'm surprised people like the design. I'm not surprised people don't like the price.

I"m sure Sal has seen the comments on the pricing of this knife. I for one like the design and would purchase one but not at the price currently listed.

Could be Spyderco listens to the members concerns and adjusts pricing prior to release ,after all we the Blade forums community do purchase a a considerable amount of their knives.

I too was surprised at the price of this one. However, I'm pretty sure that, like most manufacturers, Spyderco uses a fairly consistent formula to figure the selling price of their knives. They might be able adjust pricing a little but I wouldn't count on too much of a change. In fact, I wouldn't hold my breath that they'll change it all before the release.

As Sal always mentions, the price is based off of what it costs to make. The percentages are roughly the same for all models. The G10 VG10 knives from Japan are always perceived as overpriced. The exchange rate is usually mentioned, but I see a trend with the use of G10 and the perceived higher price. The Junior always seemed overpriced, I would guess that would have come in with a street price of $100 - $110 if it was Golden or Taichung made. Could be US sourced G10 like Taichung Spydies, but maybe the import costs are higher, who knows.

I actually like VG-10 for the ease of sharpening, but man is this blade hideous. Any price north of $100 is too much. AF nailed it, what is the appeal of this knife's design to anyone who seriously wants to carry it?
