So, Mr. Master of Sharp Objects, for someone who has more money invested in knives than a lot of us do in our own vehicles, what would you consider "out of reach" as per the original posters question? Curious minds want to know. What is that one knife that you wish you could afford?
Would it be an original Loveless? a Michael Walker? Tim Herman? One of those bejeweled William Henrys?
Mine would be an Ed Fowler Pronghorn, or a custom Loveless-style from Bob Dozier. Some of David Mozier's stuff is just out of reach for me, and a Custom R. J. Martin might just be attainable, if I'm really committed.
Actually and and I know I'm going to catch flack for this but I wouldn't spend the time to piss on a Loveless, not that he didn't make nice knives but he like MANY MANY craftsmen who have heard too many times how great their products are let it go to his head that was too swelled to fit through most doors....Honestly I have been looking for a Bergham but again, is it "out of reach" no. Nothing really is it's all a matter of what I'm willing to give up to get what I want, I have seen some BEAUTIFUL fixed blades by Walter Brend I'd love to own for $28,000 but the whole point of my collection right now is it actually means very little to me when I'm watching my hero - my father - who lives with me deteriorating daily from Parkinson's & I could easily have my race car built for that & go racing with Dad while he can still remember who he's watching.....he's leaving me approx $50k in classic cars (sorry I'm crying) so to think any stupid knife has ANY value to me compared to building a memory I'm rapidly running out of time to do is plain absurd. And not to rub it in but to be straight up, if bob dozier was to pass tommorow (I wouldn't wish death on anyone I just know how it affects pricing) between just the 3 very rare pieces of his that I have I could walk away 30-40k wealthier and problem solved. But the thing people don't seem to understand is when your spine is destroyed and you have to dig through 6 safes to find 1 specific knife that is going to be mint anyways, and how many times I've hurt my back to do that to hear "oh thanks for the pic, I'll pass" I get a bit sceptical of buyers these days unless they are talking ready to buy because they *lightbulb* looked at my trader rating... So other than that, I'd absolutely love to own a bob Lum as he is one of my all time favorite makers. But other ones I thought I'd never ever have, now I do, a custom Microtech DOC, Mozier rare discontinued fixed blade, manaro fixed blade, a Begg pessimist 7 exist only 5 went to the public of this model, and my doziers of course, a one off Clark, two Sniper Blade Works LPC's 1 with an "error" where the tang makes it a flipper, how cool is that? My elishewitz tacticals, elishewitz m4 fixed blade, Cerberus 2, Two maurauders a serialized clip point and a standard tanto, two Doucettes, my Les George fm1 titanium bolster c/f scale one of the last cpm 154 models, my rockstead shin #78, 4 takedas all presentation including a 40,000 year old mammoth handle, finally bought one of the leopard barrel steel Boker solingen knives, that's like holding a piece of history, way too many rare ZT's too many buck custom shops to list, as well as more L/E Benchmades Sprint Spydercos and some very rare oldies but as I said compared to what I'm about to lose very soon, my mentor my hero, and the man who made me who I am how can knives compare to the best father a man could ask for?
