Out with the old in with the new.. Thoughts on the Mannix 2

Had a caly and didn't like it too small, got a manix2 XL and it was too big. I saw a manix 2 g10 and light weight s110v at my local gun shop and fell in love with them both so I decided to buy the g10 there cause it had a good price but the 110 didn't, it was way inflated at $144.99 so I found a new here on the exchange for 105. I also got some Putnam scales and put all 3 together and I got my FrankenManix!! And Its freeking awesome, perfect blade size and grip, love their forward choil. It hasn't left my pocket since.

I also want a PM2, but right now the Manix is my favorite Spyder. I rotate it and the XL. They were as smooth out of the box as a Goddard lightweight, I had carried for 10 years or more. Once you get used to closing the Manix you will love it. On the Goddard or Endura, I would close it by pressing the back lock. Then I would stop the blade with my pointer at the halfway mark. Then finish folding it closed on my leg. With the Manix, I just pinch the lock buttons with thumb and pointer, and roll my wrist up about 30 degrees. The blade will close itself. I more thing. S30v is a great steel, but in my limited experience sharpen it when it quit shaving hair. Don't let it get really dull.

Thanks I'm excited. I feel like a fool, like I really should have loved the Caly 3.5, but I didn't. I mean at first I did just on the quality of the blade and fit and finish alone, but then as I carried it I just wasn't that much in love anymore. Seemed too slim and not substantial enough. Sounds like the Manix 2 might be right up my ally!

Manix 2 is an excellent knife for old retired scottish guys...:D

Manix 2 XL is not bad either...

Haha...well, that's the same way I felt about the manix. I appreciated the mechanics, the f&f, the action, etc...it just wasn't the right fit for my hand. Nothing to feel foolish about; that's why they make different model knives! :)

Btw, I think one thing that makes the caly seem so "slim" is how narrow the knife is (top to bottom) at the choil. The Manix otoh is much wider there...a little too wide for my tastes. I find that the paramilitary 2 kind of splits the difference and feels "just right". (Actually I prefer the military even more but we can do a whole new thread on that.) But don't worry, some people get that "just right" feeling from the Manix line. All of these knives have outstanding ergonomics, some will just feel better than others depending on your hand and grip.

Thanx bro, you know I kinda look to you as my Spydie guru, and I trust your observations. Not that everyone else's aren't spot on, we just seem to have kindred spirits. Being retired LEO and usually not trusting anyone, I am surprised at myself. Lol

I picked up the Manix2 knives when these two came out. Didn't think I'd like the ball lock, but I've come to like it. Fast closing isn't a priority for me. The positive detent action of the lock and the strong lock up are very seductive. The lightweight model feels too light, but that's probably because it seems so small to me. I like knives with bigger handles to grab on to. I love the Manix2 XL as a work knife at home.

Right on man! Hey, you're just having fun right now and I like helping because it's really relatable. Like I said, I was just where you are about a year ago so I know how much fun it is feeling the itch and trying to learn about every single spyderco. Lots of folks on here have given me loads of helpful input so I'm just returning the favor. Glad you found some of it helpful. :)

Thanks bro. Much appreciated

This is old news but the Manix2 came in handy for this Father & Son.

Manix 2, G-10 and s30v! I'm going out on a limb, I'm just not crazy about a lock back. I want a beefier feel in my hand. Weight is not so much an issue to me. Well see when it gets here.

The Manix 2 G -10, FFG, CPM S30V is one of my favorite blades on the market. I have one that I have carried and used quite a bit. It has required almost no work on the edge, and it took me just a few minutes with a Sharpmaker and strop to get it back to scary sharp. In hand... WOW. Hammer, saber, reverse, and choked up to saber grip using the choil... All outstanding. The ergos are flat out awesome.

I live near the store front for an online vendor, and have handled everything from cheap Kershaws to Sebenzas. Honestly, the Manix 2 G-10 blows away just about every other knife in terms of grip comfort. This is subjective, but I think many people will have a similar experience. It gives the same steel and a more comfortable grip as compared to a Sebenza or Strider, at 1/4 the price. That's a win.

I agree with Surfingringo on every point. You either tend to like the Manix2/Manix 2XL or the PM2/Millie. I lean towards the PM2/Millie. They just carry better, feel better in hand, and open/close more naturally... for me, of course. You may just have to try both to see what you like.

OK received my manix 2 and have to say wow! This is what I was lookin for. The heft is what I am used to from my cop days. Love the ball bearing lock.... Solid. I will post pics and a full review after I have carried it for more than just an hour or two. Lol. Spyderco does such a good job on their knives.

The Manix is much to wide for my pocket.
I don't mean it won't fit, lol. I just don't care for knives that take up that much pocket space. A knife that wide isn't needed for anything I can think of.

That was a Caly 3.5...http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?54132-caly-3-5-vs-mountain-lion
You are right it is a beefy carry, but I am accustomed to that knife size. I carried for years a Strider SNG which also was beefy. I actually like the feel. While the Caly was a beautiful blade, it was just a bit narrow and light for my taste. I guess it is all personal preference. If it wasn't Spyderco would only make one model.

The Manix2 is my second favorite knife next to my PM2. I do not like the flared tube on the Manix2, wish it had one more standoff in the rear of it. One of mine sports a chain ring bolt in place of the tube. It's hollow through the center.
