Outdoor knife you wish you would have never bought?

Hey buddy what is that you don't like about the Grunt ? I have the older made in Japan version and really like it.

The handle on the new one is super cheap plastic junk and was too small for me, not sure if the original had the same size handle or not. Also the full convex edge was so fat and dull it wouldn't cut anything. I also just couldn't get a feel for the angle change between the blade and handle, which ironically was one of the things I liked about it in pictures. To quote the movie Tin Cup "it felt like a half unfolded lawn chair"

Doc, the guard was too big. Knife was just a heavy brute. I had 2 gave both away as gifts.

there are 6 or 8 partially serrated CRKT knives of various models hanging around here that were bought before I figured out that I don't like serrations.

KA-BAR USMC - mine has an amazingly thick grind and I think it's not heat treated properly, because it's extremely soft :(
Another one is the Lone Wolf T1 - amazing quality and craftsmanship, but it's too small - I should have gotten the T2 instead. :)

I have a number of relatively cheap ($30 or less) production knives that I wish I had been able to handle before purchasing them by mail order (various moras, cold steel, lauri, dexter/green river, old hickory, etc.).

They're fine knives, but I don't know if I really like a knife before I hold it and use it a bit. The damn things are so inexpensive that I think, oh I'll just get that one and see if I like it.

In the end, I have narrowed down what I like a somewhat, but I also have a drawer full of production knives that won't get used. I'd rather have the money back to get something custom or semi-custom, or at the very least a few more copies of the ones I do like to stash in various car kits, field kits, etc.

If only there were a knife library...

I'm gonna hang for this....:D
But here I go: Spyderco Military:foot:, I don't hate it but I don't love it either!
I surely am sorry I spent the money on it.

And to many others, too. I — and a lot of other people — always respect your opinions, Doc, because they're generally well considered and well stated.

I always learn from your posts.

Thanks for that dawsonbob, but you do know that being my public relations representative is a non-paying job? :D

Thanks for the reply, Rockywolf. I just wondered because I've heard some good things about it as far as being a camp knife goes.

What? What? But, but, they said I'd make big money...that the check was in the mail. You mean they lied?

I meant every word, Doc.

The original Benchmade Nimvarius.

What is with making the edge of the full tang extend way beyond the handle scales all he way around the handle?
Did someone say, "let's build a knife with as uncomfortable a handle as possible?"

Ontario Kraton Pilot's survival knife was one. Bends easily , clumsy handle , over-sized guards and mediocre steel.

X2. Huge dissapointment, but then again I bought mine used and didn't pay much. You get what you pay for I guess. My knives from BRKT and RAT Cutlery (now ESEE) are much better, albeit more costly, but get the job done.

I will say the one knife I wanted to love but didn't was the Bravo 1. Too thick and heavy for it's size, blocky handle and thick edge.[/QUOTE]

I REALLY wanted to like this knife, but ended up getting rid of it for the same reason.

The SOG Trident Tanto; the single stupidest knife I've ever bought. Even stupider than the Winchester Bowie, the S&W Neck Knife, the Winchester Stockman, the four or five Gerber folders, and the Jeep Rambo style survival knife all put together.

Tops Tracker, older RD9 with sabergrind, Ratweiler, Rat7 and others *sigh*
what a waste of money...

Funny, but I felt the same way.

I had one of the early Bravo-1’s with Micarta handle and Kydex sheath,

…I could not warm up to it at all.

Traded it off and moved on.

Then I spent some time with a Bravo-2 and liked it a little better,

…at this point I had started to realize how well these thick Bark River blades worked,

…but still it was not right for me.

Time passed, …I never gave the Bravo’s too much thought after that.

Recently I got to handle a Bravo-1 with natural hardwood scales (Lignum Vitae) that Marcelo had,

…I can’t explain it, but this one felt great in my hand.

Long story short, it’s now mine and has become one of my favorite knives.

I can’t imagine anyone not loving a BK-2, but that’s just me...
I think I'm on the same page as Doc on this one. While I don't exactly regret buyng the BK-2, its probably the knife that comes closest in my collection. Certainly not to say its a bad knife as its not, its just not really the kind of knife I like. To me, its excessivly thick and heavy, has poor edge geometry, and not the best handle I have ever held.

Of course, its about as sturdy as you can get so it will hold up to all the chopping and battoning you can throw at it, its made of good steel, and while the hand may not be the best, its at least large enough for a good grip, even while wearing gloves.

So, its got a lot going for it but I'm just not in love with it. ;)

Leatherman Charge XTI. I don't know how much time I've spent pushing this thing through an 800 grit stone, this is the only knife I haven't been able to get to cut worth anything. My Fallkniven A1 somehow manages to carve better...? It's EDC now, but when I actually need a knife I turn to the OP8 in my pocket. I think a Swisstool would've been the way to go.

Benchmade 580 Barrage. Great knife. I not only wanted to love it, I DO love it! But the blade geometry just isn't my cup of tea for a camp knife.

That's strange eh, I thought they were the same specs just different materials ? Mine has a hard rubber type handle that feels much like Res-c that Scrapyard knives use and it's also one of the largest handles I have on a knife. Here is a pic for comparison with some of my other knives.....
