Overbuilt folders : Yes or no?

Black versions still available. This is where I purchased mine:

Materials are excellent as is the design, but I wish they would do a different blade profile. I'm not complaining too much, but it's a pretty aggressive tanto style

ROCK6

I received mine. Thank you for the suggestion : it's a cool addition to my overbuild folders collection :)

i think overbuilt folders have their place. there are times you cant carry a fixed blade, ill leave those scenarios up to you to imagine, and sometimes you need to perform a decently big cutting task that requires a stronger knife. if you were carrying a case slimline , you may not be able to take on that task, however if you gad a ZT 0350ts or something else it will not be a problem. all I'm saying is, big knives can make both big and small cuts(if you possess the grace and finesse to perform the task)

Which is the best screwdriver? How about the one best suited to the specific tasks. Variety is good, big, small, thick, thin, cheap, expensive, etc. just provides us with many more options.

The OP asked yes or no

Some have said yes some have said no

No one is right no one is wrong

Heck I edc a small fixed blade most days

Does not mean that that is the best choice for all

I’ve been involved in knives for decades and I’ve seen fads come and go

The overbuilt genre I do believe is here to stay but it does not mean they are for everyone

My biggest issue is with overbuilt frame locks

They just don’t add up

They don t add up. And we ve seen at least one company base much of the value of their knives on being overbuilt, even though
the large majority of their knives are frame locks.
Marketing does not have to be factual.

Why so much hostility against the frame lock. I know about the recent spine whack videos where a few knives failed, but that's kind of a silly test that has little to do with real world usage. All folding locks fail. Especially the lock back variety, which tend to fail when materials build up on the locking slot or when an inappropriate grip pressure disengages the lock . There is nothing wrong with frame locks. Sometimes it is best to avoid both the marketing hype and the internet memes.

In fact, of all my overbuilt folders, what I like best is my custom AD-10 ;)
Not insane like the CS 4-Max (really too large) but the perfect size for my hand and an incredible tank of a knife.
I ve mentioned this before on these forums, but I couldn't resist bringing this back up after seeing your link.
Years ago being very impressed with the AD10, I was able to hold one in hand and meet Andrew Demko At Blade. Fine knife! But none were available for sale. Then, about 3 years ago, I saw the Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter on line. Had some very good reviews , so I got one. When the 4 Max came out, it looked very similar to the UH in design. Then looking at your link to the AD10, I realized all three knives are very similar.
I only have the Ultimate Hunter, but I m very impressed with the strength to weight ratio, the cts xhp blade, and the great ergonomics and comfort of the knife. If not overbuilt at that weight,, certainly hard use. And look at the price! I ve got a back up.
Anyone interested might get one while there are still a few left with the cts xhp steel. The new ones with s35v will also be good, but maybe a downgrade.

I literally just ordered a Medford Praetorian T in S90V steel from DLT... This knife will be way too big, way too heavy, way too thick behind the edge, and therefore, way under the peak performance of the S90V steel its made out of. Oh, and did I mention it was expensive? ...........

........ I don't care. I have too many practical knives. I like some crazy mixed in. Can't WAIT for that beautiful, ridiculous monster.

If there is a market for them it means that these designs do express some people's personality or, as another member suggested, appeal to our 'crazy' side. Personally, i look at a few models from Medford or the XM-24 and i cringe, but i do believe it has a lot to do with the overall design, and not necessarily on the 'overbuilt' feature. I've seen some beefy folders which carry a really appealing blade design so i naturally am drawn to them

Gotta say yes. They have their place in the practical world. And, as an enthusiast..I can only speak for myself, but liken to motorcycles, aircraft and women...I can find something beautiful about every single one of them.

Nope.
I'm not a fan of thick folders.

I just need my folders to do normal tasks, not pry open car doors.

Heck yes! Why not!?

The way I view knives is simple, there is a different knife that is a perfect knife for many different tasks however no 1 knife perfect for every task...

That's what's great about the great "perfect knife" hunt / journey we all find ourselves on....

Personally I've found my small sebenza 21 insingo to be the knife I've owned for many many years and still carry it today for EDC, I think out of all knives this has been my favorite and remains my favorite for EDC... for me it strikes the balance between ruggedness, ergonomics, and utility all in 1 package that can handle just about any EDC task it faces.
The only other blade that I've had as long but havnt carried as much is the strider pt.

They are both comparable in size, yet the sebenza has a much larger cutting edge, which is nice along with IMO a high quality of fit and finish all around.
Still love the pt though.

If I'm at work however, I like something larger and more rugged/tank of a knife, preferably with a glass breaker (as I've needed to use it in the past, and it came in clutch multiple times). That's when I carry something like a microtech socom elite, or Umnumzaan.

Just my thought on the matter =]

I’ve been carrying the 4-MAX when doing yard work. It has performed very well. Better than a smaller, lighter knife. More convenient to carry than a 10” fixed blade. I’ve been looking for a reason to sell it and so far it’s hanging around.
I carry in a pouch, belt carry.

My only regret with this old ZT0561 is not buying 2 of them. After all the years of carrying this pre lockbar insert version the action and lock up is still spot on with zero blade play.
