Hey gang, just got in from an overnighter with forum member Snow. We went to place called hanging rock, Ive posted pics of this place before.......

Great time. Snow is a funny dude. It got down to 35 degrees last night, but it wasnt that bad. Slept in my skeeter beater hammock for the first time. Well.....my first time in a hammock at all! Im a convert. I just dont see myself goin back to a tent. Waay comfy, no condensation, Nice! I used an AMK heat sheet instead of a pad, and had a mountaineering Knee bag I slept in. Slept most of the night without issues. Awoke at 4am pretty chilly. I had my stocking cap and gloves and shemagh in the bag that hangs on the hammock. After I put them on, I was fine. From mid chest down stayed toasty all night from the knee bag. If you dont have one, or Know what it is, look into them. I scored it at a surplus store for 40 bones, and it stuffs down waay small and is awesome!

It rained Friday during the day so wood was soggy, but we had plenty of it. Alot of fell cedar trees around, which provided a very hot aromatic fire. I brought along a couple MREs for food. Snow hadnt had one before and thought it was pretty cool. The heaters in those things are really neat. Did some bow shooting with my new longbow, shot Snows Ruger single six...Had a ball.

Brought the Laconico with me, and beat it like it stole somethin. Handled batoning with ease, Rays high grinds really make a great Knife... ABSOULUTELY 0 hot spots on it. I mean this thing is probably one of the most, if not the most comfy knife ive ever tried in this size. Get one!!!!!!!
Held an edge great, just a sweet blade.

Also brought a GW, a machete, a farmer(of course), my gerber saw, and a Blade from JK that he sent me to beat the hell out of. Great blade. Batoned with it, used it for food prep, just dug and sliced up on wood with it, and other things. Lemme tell ya. I showed it no mercy, it laughed it off. This one is 1095, with convex grind. John got the heat treat right on, and he can do great convex. I prefer it hands down over the V grind he does, which is good, but this one is GREAT! I am gonna keep doin crazy stuff with it to try and kill it, so stay tuned!!!!

Anyways...Here are some pics!!

Dang, you're fast at the draw! I just got home and showered. I'll start uploading my pics as well.

looks like a fun trip.

the knee bag sounds interesting...it is like a sleeping bag that only comes part way up or something?

good to hear you enjoyed yourself, its fun to get out with forum members.

Simon, its like a stuffsack, except its down, and comes up(on me) To about sternum level. It has a drawstring at the top. Im 6ft 1 so, shorter guys would fit in it even better. Very cool. I will get a pic of it up.

nice, I need a small getaway like that to clear my head after all these midterms.

I LOVE cedar, great wood for several reasons. But the smell can't be beat!

Great pics, jealous of the trip you guys had! That laconico is pretty sweet too. In most of the pics of his work that I've seen, the slabs seem pretty slim. That one looks a good bit thicker/rounder.

Looks like a great time. Pretty cool having forum members get together like that. So how do you like the cord wrap of that JK? I'm not the biggest fan of cord wraps myself, even though I keep trying different wraps on mine. I finally settled on a leather thong wrap that has a bit of give to it on the squeeze and that feels pretty good in the hand.

Man, I did that wrap this morning pretty quick. Most of the work I did was with no wrap at all. Not comfy, but it worked.

I like cord wrapped knives. I am gonna wrap this one a little better, and keep on beatin it.

Okay, time to post my pictures. Most are pretty much the same as what Jake posted, but oh well. A different point of view, I guess.

I had a great time. The hammock was pretty comfortable and warm. I used a pad that I got for $5 from Walmart and I could definitely tell it provided some good insulation under me. It also helped to keep the hammock spread out flat and somewhat more stable.

The cedar fire was nice. Even when we let it burn down quite a ways it was plenty hot. The MRE I had was delicious! Cheese tortellini, spiced apples, peanut butter and crackers, pumpkin pound cake, toffees, and some apple cider. It doesn't get much better than that. I was jealous of the mini bottle of Tabasco that came in Jake's though.

I woke a couple of times to pee and was a bit cold, but another layer around my body, a hat, and my AMK space blanket helped a bit. I definitely would need a heavier bag for these temps if I planned on making these cold trips a habit.

Okay, time for some pics!

Mine is the blue tarp, Jake's is the orange. No rain, but we were prepared for it.

Beat that blade, Jake, and when you are done send it back for handles! Jake was kind enough to be one of my "knife testers" on my new line of 1095 blades, TFin04 is another. I wanted someone to try to beat it to death, and I knew these guys were the ones for the job! Looks like you guys had a good time, like the Single Six, it was the first gun I ever bought, still have it.

John

Hey that is cool - the dueling pictures from the same trip! Love the colour of that core in the cedar!

So I gotta know - which hammock was downwind of the other;)
