Overrated Blades

Chris Reeve knives. I got a large Sebenza used at a fair price. But truthfully I expected more for all the hype these knives get. It doesn't seem to be any smoother to me than some of the standard Buck and Kershaw knives I got from Wal-Mart but I expect the parts used in this knife are on the higher end for quality and longevity.

Also, I am of the opinion that the Reeve Sebenza is ugly. This kind of made me wonder why all the hype over this one folder. Maybe it is the performance over time with tough use I don't know. Several people told me that this was the best engineered folder available, so I bought it even though I didn't really like the look of it. Seems to me that the Emerson, Strider, William Henry, and Benchmade knives are just as well engineered as this one and they are good looking to boot.

I have not taken my Sebenza apart and probably won't. I'll never know about it's EDC uses because carrying it is not an option where I live. I don't like the way it sits in my pocket and in my state and every state near me it is illegal because of the blade length. So, instead of keeping it I'm giving it to my son when he returns from Iraq. I'm sure he'll like it just fine.

That's just about what I thought when I got to play with one on passaround...

I really expected a whole new level for the price but to each his own I guess.

I received my Recon 1 the other day... played with it for a while, wasn't impressed. Big, black, cheap, blah....

So I took it (along with the three new Spydies I got on the same order :D ) over to a buddy of mine's house to show 'em off... and he fell in love with the damn thing!

Get this: He gave me a $400 Yamaha electric guitar, amp, 3 pedals and all the cables for the Recon 1 plus a Spyderco Jester!

So the moral of the story: The Recon 1 is definitely not my cup of tea... but I'm sure glad I bought it!

It was his idea... He was literally drooling over the damn thing.

I told him it wasn't that great of a knife, explained the steel, etc, etc, but he didn't care.

I see everybody kept their opinions to only factory knives. Anybody with the balls to voice an opinion on custom knives?

He-he. Nope! :D

My rule is that if I have a good experience I'll talk about the maker all the time and highly recommend them. If I had a bad experience with a maker (and I've had several) I trade the knife off, keep my mouth shut about the maker and just never deal with that maker again.

So you would rather deal off the bad knife and let the other person deal with it.Interesting. If I get a bad knife I usualy don't say anything unless I am asked my opinion, but one thing is sure,I would never sell it or trade it to anybody else.

You're assuming a lot aren't you?
I never said the knife was bad. I said the EXPERIENCE was bad.
And I don't appreciate your insuating that I'm dishonest with my dealings with other forum members.

I am not saying anything, you said it.When you make a statement and you don't like somebody's reaction to it you want to change the statement. Thats the way I interpreted your remark.

No?

Just appologize. :(

You said something and I interpreted it one way. Maybe you didn't mean that way, but thats the way it sounded to me. So lets just forget it,no hard feelings.

Thanks, buddy! :D I appreciate it.

Let's not stir this up anymore than it's already been stirred.

Let's get something straight, I never questioned his honesty. He probably didn't phrase his remark to say what he actualy ment. Thats all there is to it,but i'm sure more people will want to make a bigger thing out of it.Be my guest.

I've modified my post to aknowledge Larry B's complaint and avoid any future misunderstanding. I think it clearly states what I intended now. The original post is still quoted in Larry B's post for the record. ;)
