Pacific Salt saves my dog from being mauled to death...

Seems to me I had no choice – of course I had the choice to stand there and watch my little dog die a gruesome painful death.

But in terms of a ‘to use or not to use’ choice with the knife. I didn’t seem like I did.

Good for you! You acted quickly, and to paraphrase something I heard Ted Nugent say recently, you did that most natural of things for humans -- defended what was yours, a part of your family.

This helps validate why I ALWAYS have a knife on me. Can't always reach the Glock as fast as I'd like....

As far as remorse -- I don't think any decent person actually likes to hurt others. I'd feel bad if I had to shoot some jerk who broke into my house and threatened my family or me. If necessary, I'd most definitely shoot him/her, but I'd still feel bad. From a Christian perspective, this is the result of living in a sinful world -- sometimes there are no all around good solutions.

I was going for a coffee with my brother last year and we were walking along the street with Puff on a leash. Two lovely looking ladies were walking towards us and as we crossed paths with them we smiled and they smiled etc. My brother and I were both single at the time so we thought this was a good thing.

The ladies were both still in earshot when I heard one say to the other 'Isn't that nice to see two gay men out and about without being ashamed'
My brother grumbled 'You're leaving that bloody dog at home next time'.......

So no - she's no macho accessory. :)

I don't know about Jack Russell's being a gay favoured dog or not] but one of my students brought hers to my office one day. For a laugh, I took the dog out for a walk down one of the other depts corridors and into the grounds. All I got was admiring female attention and flirty chat:D The dog was a little demon and a handful but he was certainly an asset:thumbup:

Ming..,
I glad you did save your dog. He/she is part of your family. I have a small Rat Terrier and we walk everyday the same path and have for over 7yrs. Now within the last 6 mos. is seems that a bunch of people who think it's cool to own viscious dogs have moved into my neighberhood. There is one pit bull in paticular that even tried to come through the window of his apartment to get to my dog and me. SO:
On my walks I carry a 4'piece or rattan with a Cold Steel Bushman attached to the top of it. So far I have kept one pit bull at bay with the blade end until I could get the owner to contain his damn pit bull. Twice we were attacked by a pair of chow chows running loose, the first time they came into my back yard and would not let me get close enough to close my gate so I took a shovel to that one and drove him off. The second time they both came after me and my dog I finally had to unsheath the Bushman and rap one of the dogs accross the top of the nose and drew some blood and drove them off.

When I still had our Rottweiler we used to go for a walk at night after I got home from swing shift and one night a huge pit bull came after me from 5 houses away and my Rott. stepped between the pit bull and me and tore up some dog meat. I am sad to say that our old Rott finally had to be put to sleep because of his hind legs going out and he had to drag his back legs to walk. Some time I still cry over that hero dog when I think of him.

enough is enough,
Ciao
Ron

In your back yard though? Shotgun would be more my speed. And CCW when you walk, in addition to your rattan.

Ming, you did a fine thing when you saved your little four-legged friend. I know you would rather not hurt anyone's dog under normal circumstances, but you were protecting your innocent little dog from two large dangerous predators that were intent on killing it at that time. GOOD WORK!!!

Good to hear that your dog is ok. Glad to hear that you did not end up with a bite. I have ended up with a bite trying to separate two fighting dogs. I have had large and small dogs. From Rotweillers and Argentine Dogos to Pugs. I was once walking our pug puppy when a dog came to attack. I was carrying a small bottle of maze for that particular situation. It was a stray dog. I maze the dog and it ran off quicker than lightning. Now I have walked my larger dogs with a muzzle placed on their mouths and other dogs have come too close where I had to release the muzzle so my dog could defend itself. Once I released the muzzle the other dog backed off. It is only the bad owners who I am concern with. They can be real jerks. Sometimes I would walk my dog with my .45 concealed. No incident has happened when I carry a handgun. Maybe there is a sense of "danger stay away owner is armed" on those days. LOL.

Just three weeks ago I was walking my dog with my wife and 4 month old baby and we were attacked by a big mean mastiff (well over 100 lbs). It grabbed my 70lb dog (amstaff) by the neck and trashed him around like a rag doll and as soon as he let go he turned to get me (my wife and son were moving quickly towards home).
I shot the dog one time in the back and his hind legs dropped from under him. The fight was over and my wife and son were safe (my dog is shaken and has a few bad punctures in his neck, but he is doing better).

When the police showed up I immediatly told the police officer what happened. I asked him if he wanted my license and carry permit. He just asked where I lived (just a few houses away) and told me "OK"
about a half hour later the officer and the animal control investigator stopped by and just asked me to fill out a short one page report and send it to animal control. The officer told me I did what I had to do.

Suprisingly, the dog lived! The bullet hit the spine but did not permanently damage the cord. Animal Control gave the dog back to the guy:mad:
My wife will not leave the house alone with the baby or walk the dog without me until the dog is out of the neigborhood. The dog owner's landlord is supposed to evict him for several other reason very soon. Until then I not only carry a gun and a knife but a very BIG knife:thumbup:

I'm glad your little guy is OK. Mine is much better now.
You did the right thing. Good job to you!

That's a truly terrifying story. As a father with a 6 and 2 year old boys, and a little girl a month away, sceneraios like this are what keep me constantly on my guard. If I was alone, I'm not too worried about beating/kicking/shooting an attacking dog - but when you add your wife and precious little ones to the mix, everything gets way scarier.

I'm glad you reacted quickly, were prepared, and everything turned out well. Now you just have to get rid of the dog/owner from your neighborhood!
