Pack set ups

For day to day stuff, cell phone car charger, sunglasses, RX glasses, Leatherman WAVE, can of gas, Spec-Ops small pocket organizer with a Rite-in-the-Rain spiral tablet and a Moleskine and some other things in it, pens, Energizer Penlight, etc. Storm Shelter, Ritter SKIT, contractor trash bag, FAK-Blow-Out Kit (I guess that would make it a FAK-BOK :D ) Reynold's Oven Bag - all stuff a regular Maxpedition Fatboy Versipac.

I have a Khaki Fatboy Jumbo that I used a little bit and I'm going to sell it or trade it for the Maxpedition (Large) Nalgene Bottle Holder like Tony Dobbs has. I think if they made a Fatboy Jumbo Versipac and took the water bottle pocket off of the one side and just did a mirror-image with the existing side pocket duplicated on the other side - you couldn't beat that. As it is, I tend to use the smaller and original Fatboy...

I have a Pygmy Falcon II and it's a really excellent little day pack. You could possibly extend that to two or three days if you are in a hospitable environment with a poncho or basha or similar shelter shock corded to the back of it and wanted to live on B-Jerky and dried fruit, etc. It would hold enough and has for me.

My brother has been running a Camelbak BFM and he absolutely adores that pack and thinks I am a total masochist for going back to a medium ALICE with no frame. Most of the stuff I carry is light and just takes up a lot of room so I go ask Alice when I need to carry a lot of stuff. As a matter of fact, if I had the ALICE frame, he would think I was more of a masochist. :D

I find a Medium ALICE to work just fine for my needs but for you guys that want to consistently hump over 40-45 pounds, ALICE can be a bitch. :D

I would eventually like to get a BFM or something on par with that, I just can't get the dough up to make that type of pack-purchase at this time.

If you're not humping radio batteries, massive amounts of ammunition, grenades, claymores and other heavy goodies... I think ALICE can do just fine and she's not the boulder everyone thinks she is until you start chucking heavy stuff in her and packing her tight, then she is a boulder on your back to be avoided at all costs.

ALICE, for me, is really a GTFO bag. I can pack a lot of regular stuff in her and she is still manageable...

I have to get some 1" OD strap, Fastex buckles and other hardware and sit down with some Singer Upholstery/Carpet thread next week and go to town on her and tune her up.

Jumbo Versipack for 3-season day hikes.

Vulture for winter day hikes and 3-season overnights.

Golite Quest for longer-term hiking/camping.

Thanks for all the replies. The jumbo I have has the water bottle holder which holds my stainless 38 oz. guyot. I attached the 10 x 4 with another guyot and cup. On that is a M-2 pouch to hold my fire starting gear. I was amazed at how much that pack holds. I can carry everything I need for two days out. My foam pad carries strapped underneath. I just have to carry the sleeping bag separate.

Do you have pics of the water bottle holder on the Jumbo? That is an interesting combo

When I get home I'll get a pic up. I'm on a break from the shop. :)

I've recently gotten rid of most of my bags and packs. I now have a Mystery Ranch 3 Day Assault for my day walk/kayak/canyoning pack (little large but OK) and a Mystery Ranch NICE frame with either a Crew Cab or a Cerberus bag (actually I'm yet to use the Cerberus bag) for multi day outings.

I've never come across anything that carries as comfortably as the Mystery Ranch packs.

I'm enjoying this thread and have been looking for a suitable ultra light for 3 days and finding the frame support a big issue with weight. I see sooo many brands and models being mentioned here and unfortunately being in Australia I dont have access to a lot of these. The suitabe packs here ask big dollars.
I think I'm looking for a 40 litre mainly vertical pack with light flat alloy braces, several mesh pockets on the back, three entries (top bottom and mid) and a few little pockets on the sides. Nice and simple made out of a tough light material and not too expensive. Is that a big ask?

Day Hike:
Snugpak "Rocket" harness- 30 liters.

3 Seasons overnighter:
Snugpak Main body - 40 liters.

Winter overnighter:
Snugpak Rocket System - 70 liters.

Since I've been working on getting some ultra light gear, I've found I can get almost everything I need for a couple nights in a Medium ALICE pack (no frame or hip belt). I use a tarp for the most part, and I have a nice Mountain Hardware 32 degree bag which compresses down to the size of a thermos.

I also wear a small-medium fanny pack.

I know I personally dont like have two or three diffrent camping kits, I like to have one that has everything I need to bring with. Right now, its been the Max Lunada, its perfect for me in the sense that its small, I've gotten smaller and smaller packs, and Finally came to this one. Right now it has just under 10 pounds of gear, and has what I need as essentials. I could probably loose a pound or two, but the are some conviences I like to have.

I get a bunch of crap in mine as well. I can easily pull an overnighter if need be, but it is my daypack.

In the winter time the only thing extra I carry is a folding saw. I also put a spork in thanks to MtnflkMike:)

I'm definitely a multiple packs guy...here is my current selection:

Maxpedition Jumbo as a ditch-the-truck-and-walk bag (or occasionally for day hikes)

HSGI Armordilla for a school bag for days I go to school

TT MAV + an assortment of different pouches including TT, TAG, DropZone (the only pouch I don't actually like) and Maxpedition for tacticlol outings

New: MEC Gladerunner reviewed elsewhere on this forum for winter overnighters, ski pack, and probably summer 3-day trips

Karrimore SF Sabre 60-100 for an expedition pack.

currently, i dont have a pack, but the duluth wanderer looks to be about perect for lightly provisioned 1 nighters or day hikes.

Here's a quick pic of the jumbo with the 10x4 on the right, M2 on the front of the 10x4.

I've got a Maxpedition Fatboy that I absolutely love. It's perfect for my fishing/day-hiking outings.

Usually I use the Max. Jumbo also with an M1, cell phone holder and a couple of ammo pouches on it for day hikes. I got a Devildog on closeout, and am playing with that also.

For longer, I still stick with a medium Alice. I've tried a ton of internal frames, and none fit my back like my Alice pack. Of course, I've been using it since 1983, so we're old buddies. I would like to try a Kifaru, and might drop in on them someday since they're close to me.

Having one pack is like having one knife, it's just not normal. Depening on where I am going and the length of the trip, I'll use a Maxped Jumbo, a fanny pack, a small daypack, large daypack, or a large Arc Terrex for winter trips.

i did some down sizing recently and gave my brother my eagle AIII. i replaced it with the smaller and more versatile kifaru scout. nothing i have come across beats the kifaru omnibelt system for comfort.

a few months ago for edc and dayhikes i bough a kifaru tailgunner 1. it has alot more internal organization than the scout with just a little less space. the scout can balloon in size with add ons though.
