I don't wish I was young again very often, but.....

You know, if it weren't for my aversion to torn muscles and ligaments, broken bones and disfigurement and death in general I'd give this a go come spring.

Greg finally completed his pilgrimage from Northwest Arkansas to Houston and back picking up his "new" 1981 Blue Hole OCA canoe. The owner told him that he had not had the canoe on the water in ten years, since he moved to Texas from California. Needless to say, Greg is proud of his new aquisition. And as I mentioned earlier, I have dibs on the canoe if Greg finds it not to his liking. He has plans to take it to the Buffalo National River this weekend. Rain currently moving through the midsouth and predicted through the end of the week assure plenty of water for a good maiden float!

I was searching for Blue Hole canoes when I stumbled upon this forum. To my surprise, I realized that the Greg you speak of is my brother in law. Back in Dec. he brought the canoe down to Bastrop, Tx. and we paddled a 15 mi. stretch of the Tx. Co. river between Austin and Bastrop. It has been many years since I have been in a canoe but by the end of the trip I was thinking about purchasing my own. We had good water that day as the river was running about 600cfm which is just enough to avoid having to portage across the low bits. Greg says he'll be back again soon so I'm looking forward to another float!

Small world eh? I suppose he has mentioned his ongoing project to you? Stream restoration? He is making good progress in winning support for the dam removal, park creation and stream project. Proud to know the guy!

Yes, if you are in the market for a canoe, I personally would advise you to find a similar one from this defunct company if you can find one at a good price. I am pretty sure Greg would agree with me. I would still like to find an OCA myself. Though the odds of finding one are greatest in the South and Mid-South.

I know it's a long ways off for both of you, but there's a yellow OCA in Boonsboro, MD for $300.

If interested, search Western Maryland's Craiglist for "canoe."

I found the yellow OCA Blue Hole canoe mentioned above using SearchTempest. I have all my canoe bases covered for now, but I still do a quick daily check to see if there's something I might "need" that's within driving distance for a good price. SearchTempest allows you to search all the craiglist ads withing a user specified distance (along with other ways to define your search.) The great thing about it is that it saves your search criteria so there's no need to reenter your search info each time. If you're looking for a canoe or kayak—or car, tractor, or whatever, try SearchTempest.
