paper sharpening wheels - when your time is important to you

anyone wondering what size wheel to get, if you are picking up a grinder with a 6" motor housing you get an 8" set which will give you 2" between the knife handle and housing.

the single shaft motor i have had a capacitor mounted on top. i moved it to the side out of the way. anyone that has a motor like this but was wondering how to use it with the capacitor on top, now you know :D

I just found out that a local hardware store is on the suppliers list for the paper wheels . I'm thinking of going to pick some up !

i would make sure they are not the cheap recycled paper wheels like i bought not long after buying my first set from razor sharp. sometimes going cheap is not the way to go. i wore out the cheap wheels i bought already.

i just re read your post and missed the part about the hardware store being on the suppliers list. i didnt want you or anyone to find out the hard way that the cheap wheels suck.

if you have any problems send em an email with your number. i'll be glad to give you a call and help you out :D.

So i practiced on kitchen knives which got really sharp, then i did it on my delica which came out great. Then for some reason i decided that i would do it on my griptilian..... Bad idea, the grind came out horrible, like something in a nightmare. The bevel is all curved up. And to top it off it hit the corner of the wheel and sliced it up real good. I placed an order on a new wheel with grit, so next week im going to buy some really cheap folders and practice on those some more before i move on to my grip again.

email me pictures of your griptilian and the wheel. it might not be as bad as you think. rje196021@gmail.com send me your number too. i'll give you a ring and see if i can help you out a little.

a lot of guys get freaked out sharpening that way but i have never had anything happen. a face shield is a good idea if sparks from a carbon steel blade bother you.

i can see a few drawbacks to holding the knife like the directions say at the 9:0 position and not being able to see is the main one. you could end up sharpening on the shoulder or up above the shoulder or end up with an uneven edge like you did.

i had a member ask about where to get small quantities of white rouge cheap. he said his supplier is charging $4.00 for 4 oz. bar. anyone find a cheaper place to get the medium grit white rouge?

a member contacted me wanting a place to buy small quantities of white rouge. he found a supplier that has grobet dixon white jeweler's rouge for $1.65 per 4oz. bar but he didnt say exactly who had it. has anyone else found white rouge cheaper or as cheap?

Richard,

Sorry for the mix-up. I thought I had included the info on where to find the Grobet Dixon white jewelers rouge. It is at FDJ On Time. The URL for the jewelers rouge is: http://www.fdjtool.com/ProductInfo/47.2E_470.aspx. It begins at $1.65 per 4oz bar and the price goes down the more bars you buy. If you buy more than 12 bars at a time, the price is $1.37 a bar.

Anyway, hopes this helps.

no problem. you sent me the info but not the link where to get it.

if you ever see any of the paste for a tormek grinder, get some and give it a try on the slotted wheel. ken onion told me it works great. also just buff the burr side of an edge. he said it gives you one heck of an edge.

I took the plunge and ordered a set of wheels from Grizzly, I now have a Porter Cable varible speed grinder. I think I'll be making a setup that 1scooter posted with the addition of the Bubble Jig to keep the blade level. Should be fun.

starting out the bubble jig would help to get close to the angle you want. dont try to watch the bubble while you are sharpening or it will drive you nuts trying to keep it centered. just use it to get close and go for it :D.

Rich,
I'm going to use 1scooter's set up with the laser to get the angle. I will use the bubble jig to make sure I keep the blade level so there are no waves in the blade. 1scooter discovered this problem and solved it with his base that sits it front of the wheel that he rests the blade on. I'm not quite that handy, and I have a bubble jig, so I'll see if it works.
