Pappy Van Winkle

I'm trying to decide if it's a viable option for a 40yo man to go to the mall, sit on Santa's lap, and ask for bourbon?

Please have someone take pics.

Guyon, you wrote:Inquiring minds want (need) to know: which one will be opened (enjoyed) first?

I've still got some 12-year "Lot B" and some 10-year 107-proof from last year that I'm finishing off. I'll probably wait for a special occasion to crack the 15-year. Maybe I'll have a snort or two over the holidays. :thumbup:

Dang you guys are making me thirsty! I went to my local purveyor of alcohol and could find no Pappy. I guess I am going to have to special order some.... Christmas will be here soon after all.... but on the other hand then I would have to share it :eek:

Well, my "Pappy 15" has just been delivered. I was hoping to wait until Thanksgiving evening to open this one....but, I have extremely low will power when it comes to buying and tasting quality bourbon, 1911 .45 ACP handguns, and Busse knives. So, I'm just gonna give in to the Winkle and enjoy....:D

DowntownDM, this one's for you... :D

Punch Brothers - "Rye Whiskey" Lyrics

Rye whiskey makes the band sound better,
Makes your baby cuter,
Makes itself taste sweeter.
Oh, boy!

Rye whiskey makes your heart beat louder,
Makes your voice seem softer,
Makes the back room hotter, oh, but

Rye thoughts aren't good thoughts, boys,
Have I ever told you about the time I...

Rye whiskey wraps your troubles up
Into a bright blue package,
Ties a bow around it.
Oh, boy!

Just throw it on the pile in the corner, see,
You're not alone in not being alone tonight, but

Rye love isn't good love, boys,
Have I ever told you about the time I...

I used to wake up bright and early,
Got my work done quickly, held my baby tightly.
Oh, boy!
Rye whiskey makes the sun set faster,
Makes the spirit more willing
But the body weaker because

Rye sleep isn't good sleep, Boys,
Have I ever told you about the time I
Took it and took her for granted?
How I took it and took her for granted?
Well, let's take some
And take them all for granted.
Oh, boy!

DowntownDM,

WOW....the "Pappy 15" is phenomenal:thumbup::thumbup:

It has a bit heavier body and, of course more heat than the "12", but it's very worthy of the effort and money to attain it.

I'm hoping to have the "Pappy 20" delivered next week. Does this ever end?...:D

Awesome Rye song. ;)

Excellent... ;)

And, actually, it almost does end there... I mean, really, there isn't much that's of the same caliber as Pappy 15 or 20. George T Stagg, Thomas Handy Rye, 100th Anniv Four Roses, Van Winkle Rye, Elmer T Lee Single Barrel, maybe a few others that are almost as good, IMO.

I used to keep 20 whiskeys at home, but I've narrowed it down to 10 now - just to keep it reasonable since I have so many other hobbies/interests. And as much as I like the Pappy 20, it's not even in my top 10 anymore - mostly because I want some variety vs being too deep in Wheaters/VW whiskey.

The 10 whiskeys I stock at home and never want to be without are:

* George T Stagg barrel-strength Bourbon
* Thomas Handy barrel-strength Rye
* Booker's barrel-strength Bourbon
* Four Roses 17yr 100th Anniv barrel-strength Bourbon
* Wild Turkey Rare Breed barrel-strength Bourbon
* Pappy 15yr bourbon
* VW Lot B 12yr Bourbon
* Van Winkle 13yr Rye
* Elmer T Lee single-barrel Bourbon
* Sazerac 6yr Rye

Of course there are lots of others that are "good" in one way or another, but this list covers all the bases I'm into: rye (3) vs ryed-bourbon (5) vs wheated bourbon (2), multiple distilleries (4 of the 6 - no Makers or Heaven Hill), some single barrels (2), some barrel-strengths (5), and an age span from 6yrs (Baby Saz) to 17yrs old (the Four Roses).

I feel, for me, that it's the best cross section of American whiskey that I really love to drink - and it all comes from first-hand experimentation over the last several years (the last 5 in particular). I must have tried 70 different brands/expressions to get it down to this list, maybe even more than that.

Good times. :D

Just ordered a bottle of "Pappy Van Winkle 20 Year". Can't wait for this one to be delivered.

Cheers.

Sweet. Enjoy. :thumbup:

The Stitzel-Weller whiskey in that bottle will be gone forever in a year or so.

That's the main reason why I ordered it. When you mentioned this earlier (when the Stitzel-Weller bottled "20" is gone, it's gone forever), I began my search.

Again, DowntownDM, I can't thank you enough for your very informative suggestions and help. My wallet is a little lighter, but my taste buds are celebrating...:D

Well, looks like my bottle of "Pappy Van Winkle 20 Year" will not be delivered...:(

I called to check on the status of the order and a staff member told me that they had to fill the orders for other customers on the waiting list first. I have no problem with that...but, they also told me previously that my order had shipped.

Oh well. No "Pappy 20" for me this year, but I will continue to be on the hunt for a bottle.

I cracked the 20 yo first, its good, but not better for the extra money than the 15

yeah. I agree the 15 is better.

But I contend there isn't any Bourbon better than Pappy 15...

The 20's value is best found by comparing it against any other Bourbon. ;)

(cool photo. nice sheath too.)

Thanks! The sheath carries amazing with the shoulder strap, Jeff ( Rainwalker) is amazing. Anyways, yeah, the 15 is the top as far as I'm concerned as well, just tried the 10 tonight, it's ok, nothing great, but ok

Pappy "20" story to follow:

This past August, my wife and I bought a home in Kentucky due to her job. At the moment, I'm still in Virginia with our son until he graduates from high school this upcoming June.

With that said, this morning I called the local craft beer/whiskey store near the house in Kentucky and asked if they had received any "Pappy 20 Year" lately (in August, they told me they hardly ever get the "20"). The clerk told me that they had just received a couple of bottles but they only had one left.

After explaining to the clerk my situation of living in two different places, she laughed and said that was one of the better stories in trying to get them to reserve a bottle of "Pappy".

I then told the clerk I wasn't trying to get her to reserve the bottle for me (cause I knew they couldn't), but I was just hoping to have the opportunity to buy a bottle when I come to Kentucky for Christmas. The clerk then realized my story was legit and, out of the goodness of her heart, she bagged the last bottle of "20" with my name on it and placed it in the manager's office for me to pick up when I arrive in Kentucky for Christmas.

In addition, I just want to give a big "Thank You" to Jroden5446 for his generosity and to DowntownDM for the quality information given concerning the various Winkle versions.

Sorry for the lengthy post, but as you all know, we will do anything to aquire that next Busse knife or that next small batch of quality/rare bourbon....:D

Got a call from my store last night.
"Hey, I see where you filled out a request card for next year's Van Winkle. I have a bottle of 15 you can have today."
"Can I pick it up tomorrow?"
"We can hold it 24 hours."
"Put my name on it."

Today, I found out the store had called Van Winkle and conveyed an adamant request for more bottles. Apparently, it worked, though I had already heard from a number of vendors that VW cut distribution this year. First time my store got any bottles outside of October, so the request must've been strongly worded.

I went in to pick up my 15 today, and I casually asked if they might have a bottle of 13 year Rye as well. When the guy returned from the back office, he had two bottles in his hand. Someone had not picked up his reserved VW in time.

So merry Christmas to me...
