So i thought i wanted a paramilitary 2.. and after searching i finally did find somewhere that has a couple in stock. Now im not so sure if i want to spend 130$ on it. Does anything make it worth it or is it just a very popular knife with a lot of hype behind it? Is there anything that makes it worth the 50$ more then lets say a manix 2 in s30, or just your average 80$ benchmade with 154cm.

Im very curious because i would think there sold out for a reason, but when people talk about it it seems like everyone gets it because everyone else in the knife community likes it. Especially after i hear in a few reviews that you get very little cutting edge for the size of the knife, i dont really know because pictures dont do it justice but i like efficiency, i dont want to have extra weight and handle if it isnt necessary.

There are hordes of PM2 cultists on this forum. Personally I think it is way over hyped. It's a good knife, sure, but it is not the end-all be-all knife it's often touted to be. There are several knives I would buy before a PM2 but if you like it, $130 is a small sum in the scheme of things and if you decide you don't like it you can get what you paid for it.

Problem is, idk if i like it or if i like it because everyone talks about it. 130 isnt a lot but to buy it wait for it get it be unsatisfied then have to go through trying to resell it is kind of a pain.

The PM2 is nice because it has no major drawbacks. It feels really nice in the hand, it's lightweight, thin, the g-10 isn't too grippy, the clip is decent, the blade is a good size and easy to use for most tasks, and the blade steel is solid. It's not the most fun or flashy so if you're the type who doesn't actually cut a lot, maybe it isn't the best choice. When I actually need to cut something, I will use that before most any knife I own at this point. It's just very comfortable and ergonomic.

I'd be willing to go up to 150 for the PM2. I like the handle, I like the blade shape, I think the materials are good, and it works well for me.

But if the PM2 cost that much all the time it would never have gotten the attention it has. It's an excellent knife but so is the manix 2. I just want a FFG blade and I'm going to have to settle on either a lightweight manix 2 or get a special edition one.

It's a great knife. Very light, very comfortable.

That said, it is also a lot more handle than sharpened blade, and takes up a lot of pocket space for what you get.

If you think you might like one, get one. It's not like they're that hard to sell. Besides, even most folks who think the forum love for the knife is a bit much (yes, I'm one of those people) admit that it's a very nice knife.

It's a real personal thing.

It's a great knife, no doubt.

But if it doesn't call to you, find a knife that does.

It's a pretty excellent knife, but I don't know that I'd buy one at their current prices. I ended up selling mine because it just sat in a drawer for months and months - it's a good knife, and I used it pretty hard at work for a year or so, but I prefer the FFG Manix 2 sprint runs by a mile. To answer your question, for me, there isn't much about the Para 2 that really puts it ahead of the Manix 2 in the same steel, except maybe the full flat grind on the Para 2. Both feel great in the hand, both have excellent mechanisms, and if anything, the Manix 2s I've owned were all smoother and had less blade play than the Para 2 I had.

I keep seeing them for 170$ or more from the exact same retailer that sold me one for 110$ or so a couple years ago. Ridiculous markup, and that's actually pretty low compared to a lot of places... If I had to choose between an s30v Manix at 80-90$ or a Para 2 at their current ridiculous prices, I'd go with the Manix every time.

It's my favorite knife. The ergos are great (better then the manix IMO) Its lightweight but still has enough toughness behind it to take on some hard cutting task. I find the g 10 grips better then cold steels super texture but still zooms in and out of the pocket. Hype or not I don't think you'll be disappointed. Its a good solid knife that basically got everything right.

Just my $0.02

It looks nice, but i do have a knife thats calling to me more then that is but im kind of scared to try it out because its not like anything i ever had before. The para 2 appeals because people say nothing but good about it, the knife thats calling me doesn't really get forum attention and i haven't heard anyone talk of it really.

Why not ask about the knife that's calling you? Chances are that there will be some people here who will have experience with that knife.

Just because it appeals to some, doesn't mean it will appeal to all.

Follow your gut and try something different, life's too short not to.

You'll probably find a better deal on a PM2 down the road anyway.

What's the other knife?

Idk.. a stupid reason. hearing everyone talk about how great the pm2 is makes me feel like i kind of need it. I know how immature that sounds but.. idk. The knife thats calling to me well there is a couple but the main one is the benchmade 522 presido ultra satin plain edge in 440c.

what frightens me is the axis lock, never touched it handled it played with it or seen one in real life. And then ppl now say that 440c is inferior to other steels now.

Just because it appeals to some, doesn't mean it will appeal to all.

Benchmade presidio ultra. The cheaper one with the 440c blade. I saw it for 70 bucks.

I have a Presidio and find it to be a great knife.

No shame in getting a BenchMade.

PS - I've never had an Axis Lock Issue.

440c is a great knife steel, not the edge retention of some super steels, but still good; balanced with good toughness and relative ease of sharpening; what most folks like in a knife blade.

I love my Paramilitary 2 (camo S30V) and my Benchmade Axis lock knives (556 Mini Grip M4 and 710 D2)...

Can't go wrong with the PM2 or any Benchmade Axis lock in my experience.

The axis lock is new to me and idk the lock from what i understand works from 2 springs inside of it and that seems frightening like they might wear out. I have no idea though. How durable and long lasting is benchmades axis? Because i really do just like that knife, i like the blade shape i like the look of the thumb studs i like the clip position, i pretty much like everything about the knife, i favor it over the just very idk a way to say it and not start a problem. The para 2 just looks very generic to me.

Do you guys think i should just wing it and take a shot in the dark and get the benchmade presidio ultra?

I would not call buying a Benchmade with an Axis lock a shot in the dark. The Axis is a tried and true lock that is heavy duty, smooth and very easy to manipulate. I had been without an Axis in my collection for quite a while and just picked up a Griptilian with custom scales. Man, I forgot how fun it is to just flick the Axis. If you like the Presidio, go for it. And there is nothing wrong with 440C. Sure, it's not a modern day super duper steel but it's a solid steel.
