para2 cf

i just checked my watch list on _bay and noticed that a carbon fiber para2 sold for get this... over 821.00 DOLLARS! that's freakin crazy, you know what kind of custom you can get for that kind of scratch?

I was the "other" bidder for quite some time on the sale that went to $821. I wanted this Para 2 CF as a daily carry and have an insight/opinion for what it's worth. For some, $821 is an inconsequential amount of money. My previous boss used to have about $6 million in his bank account. I know because I got his ATM receipt one day and asked him about it. His active trading account had over $12 million in it. Again, for just a sense of it, this sort of money doesn't even rate for some. My best friend's brother wrote a check from his brokerage account for $28 million for one of his homes on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. It's like me (I don't know about you) handing a few bucks to the kid at the door raising money for the softball team- to buy this knife if desired. It's a rare item that cannot be had. Telling some people they cannot have something is a challenge. And when that challenge is met with literally unlimited resources, well.....I see how bidding can go to ridiculous levels.

I left the bidding at $650 I think it was. While this is hardly a few bucks to the kid at the door for me, I wanted a carbon fiber Para 2 for daily carry. Or, figured I could still get out of it for "whatever" if I didn't like it. I wasn't sorry when I stopped bidding and lost it. In all honesty I was partly curious to see just how high others would push this. I'm very glad I was out. I really didn't want to pay more than $400. The other $250 for me....I figured I could live with it.

One last thought....it's a silly rationalizing I do but I view the "cost" of an item as the difference between what I buy for and what I can sell for. So if I paid $650 for that Para 2cf, lightly used it and was able to sell at some future time for some figure, the cost is just the difference. Maybe that's silly but it's a way for some of us to justify these hobbies to our wives, right? Or ourselves. There's always the "greater fools" theory to fall back on for that one.

But I also completely get your point sechip about buying a custom for that money. I have a couple and would be too afraid to carry them actually, as I now view them more as art pieces. In fact, I'm going to sell them here pretty soon.

I have a Para 2, digital on the way. Just took delivery of a couple other items, and now on the hunt for a Manix 2. I'm trying to decide on black, satin, strait, or combo blade.....too many choices.......all with my "savings" from losing that __bay auction.

At the end of the day, if you're happy, who are we to judge? I mean that. A custom might not scratch 0.01% of the "itch" that a CF/S90V Para 2 would satisfy.

That's just your specimen and you got lucky. Spyderco doesn't put more effort in f&f in those sprints other than use different/ better materials. I handled different s90v sprints and they did not all have the perfect f&f my regular para 2s have. So you really can't say the s90v para is the smoothest, best f&f etc... out of all sprints. Quality varies from each specimen to another.

Could be. However, like I said, I have had mulitples of every single sprint run made to date. None compare to the S90V in several of the areas I mentioned. This latest 204p version was super stiff, not smooth at all. Maybe it has just been coincidence that all were subpar compared to my S90V versions, I don't know. I still have 2 of the S90V versions and both are identical in smoothness and fit/finish. Maybe I got lucky twice, who knows.

Ummm...someone just listed one on fleebay starting at...$1,000!! I don't have the link cause I'm mobile right now.

I use a free bid sniping service any time I bid on an eBay auction. It eliminates the headaches of a bidding war.

Someone just listed a Spyderco Twin Towers Commemorative Knife for $850 buy it now!

Wow just wow.
I really wanted one and was hoping I'd luck into one someday but guess not.
Who are we to tell someone how to spend there money lol.

Jeez. I'd be happy just getting some custom CF scales for a regular S30V PM2.

The ultrasuperdupersteel would be nice, but really I just love carbon fiber ;)

My feelings as well. Does anyone make aftermarket cf scales for the PM2?
