Paramilitary 2 Clarification Questions (AKA, Seal the Deal for me)

Alright all you Paramilitary 2 lovers out there (and I know there are a lot!).

It's taken me a while to think that maybe all the love thrown at this knife is for real, meaning that I might be ready to actually order one and get one in my hand to see what all the fuss is about! I think I'm probably gonna go satin s30v blade with digicamo scales.

My clarification question is around the action of the knife and the pivot screw. From my research, I've heard some people suggest that in order for that fast opening action (thumb flick, middle finger flick, etc.) the pivot needs to be loose enough that there will inevitably be some blade play. Is that true? I'm not sure that I could handle it if it is...

Any other recommendations on configurations or anything else are also appreciated. I'd also love to know if the digicamo is as nice looking in person as it is online. The print doesn't strike me as being overly tactical or military inspired, but maybe I'm wrong  .

Anyway, help me seal the deal! I'm sending a knife back to BladeHQ today and once I receive my store credit I hope you've all convinced me enough that there is no more hesitation!

It depends my digi para2 has to have the slightest blade play to be able to just drop with gravity with the lock released. But I mean you have to work to find the blade play. I could tighten pivot slightly and eliminate blade play all together and it would still be smooth enough to flick open no problem I just prefer them to free swing. On the other hand my black para 2 swings freely with absolutely no blade play it just came that way not tuning ect.

And I have a few much more expensive ti frame lock ballbearing flippers I had before my para's and I still like my para 2 more then any of them and I edc it the most.

My black on black PM2 swings free, flips easy, and has no blade play at all. I think it's luck of the draw. Some have minimal play, some do not. Seems that with some fiddling and tuning, you can normally find a sweet spot from what I've read.

I'm extremely happy with my PM2. Best EDC I've ever had.

The para 2 is just a very well designed knife, comfortable in hand capable blade shape not too big not too small. In addition to having good size shape it's also tough and durable, plus the compression lock is genius. I do have a video that is all about why people love the para 2.

I won't have a knife that has blade-play. I do love PM2's...bought one yesterday...again.

Yeah, I'm the same way! The knife I'm returning today is due to some very minor lock rock. The PM2 hasn't ever given you a problem with any play in any direction?

Had minor lock rock myself, turned out the screws on the stop pin were loose, fixed that ;)
As for the smoothness, you just got to find the sweet spot on the pivot screw and locktide it down...

YMMV, but of the 4 that I've owned I don't recall that any had blade play that I detected.

small amount of blade play..... my biggest disappointment...... two times open in the pocket and almost lost a pinky knuckle.... I owned two.... went with the Endura.

I love the PM2.
I have owned two of them on two separate occasions. (About 2 years apart) and used them both.

I might get flack for this, but from my experience S30V is the king of micro-chipping issues.
Maybe it was my two PM2's (and the two Milli's I have owned?)

I also had a KA Mini Samaritan in S30V that I used for about 3 months and had to very sadly sell because it would micro-chip so easily.

Maybe it's just an S30V thing to micro-chip with ease, but I never had the same issue on the countless BM 940's I have used.

Those 4 knives are my only experience with S30V, and I have kept it that way...

Since then I have used CPM-154/M4/3V/CPM-20CV with zero issues in terms of micro-chipping.

It's the only reason I don't own a PM2 anymore, although I may at some point pick up an LE with a different steel.

I really hope you don't have these issues and can enjoy your knife.....

Only when they are new - with time and use, they wear in quite nicely. And, if you don't already know how to, learn how to disassemble, properly clean/lube, and reassemble, and you'll have very little to worry about.

I had the same thing happen in all the S30V knives I've owned:

PM2 (major chipping, not micro)
Benchmade 162 (again major chipping, returned to Benchmade, gave me a whole new knife, which I subsequently sold).
Spyderco Nilakka (sold)
Strider SnG (sold)
Several others I can't remember now

S35VN, its replacement, I have had no issues with, and own three knives with it (TSF Beast, Kizer Ki423, Southern Grind Spider Monkey).

I too will look for a sprint PM2 in a better steel, and then do a giveaway with my current one.

Thanks for posting this!

I have talked to many people that have had the same issues, but still nice to not be the only one in a thread!

I have 2, both digi camo, 1 satin one black. Camo looks really cool and feels great!
Both swung freely from the box with no blade play any direction.....
The best flickers I have!

Do it or we'll beat you senseless... :p ;) :D

My first "modern" Spydie was the PM2 and I still have and absolutely love it. Just put a Ti deep carry clip on it from NWLynch and I love it.

I just shot these pics today for another thread. My PM2 just needed a little flipping the first evening I got it, and now is smooth as a babies...well, you know. I have had to adjust the pivot on other knives, but not this one. It's tight with NO blade play closed or locked open, but still smooth flowing. I'm pretty impressed, and I've got a bunch of ball bearing pivot knives that aren't too much smoother. Color me impressed.
