Paramilitary 2 up and down blade play

So I received my para2 from blade HQ a couple days ago and first of all, it was very hard to get out and was not smooth at all. I have had another para2 in the past and this one was a lot harder to deploy and the detent was ridiculously strong. Anyways, after lubing it up with some tuf-glide, I adjusted the pivots a pit until it was pretty smooth with no blade play. I checked it today and now it has quite a bit of up and down play for only having it for a couple days. What is the deal with these? I have had one before and had the same problem. Should I contact Spyderco or bladeHQ?

Contact spyderco, bladehq wont be able to do anything. Is there horizontal play as well? If so the problem might be a loose pivot. As for the too strong detent it sounds like the lockbar might be bent too far

Check the pivot screw, if it has worked itself loose then get some locktite and tighten it back up.

If the pivot is tight and it still has vertical play, contact Spyderco

i tightened the screws and the only point where it doesn't have blade play is where it is at the point when i cannot open the knife with one hand have to tug the blade out. i am very disappointed in spyderco because i though that this knife was going to be solid considering the fact that i payed about 140 dollars for it and it is only has been a couple days after receiving it. Do you think spyderco could be able to fix this? Could they also patch up a chip in the blade coating?

Contact them and allow them the opportunity to help.

You'll find out the answers to all your questions that way.

Things happen, but when you pay $150 for knife, shouldn't it come close to perfect?

Close to perfect is really subjective. You don't get a "No play, perfectly centered, no small marks guarantee" with your paperwork.

I've sold many things that cost a hell of a lot more than $150 that were less than perfect. It's usually understood that you need to give the manufacturer the opportunity to correct the problem.

When you buy a new car and something isn't right, do you take it to everyone pointing out the small flaw you found, or do go back to the dealership?

Mistakes happen in production, They just do.

Well going back to figuring out why there is blade play, do you have any up and down play when you tighten them that much?

Well I consider the knife no longer "one hand opening" when there is no more up and down play. Even when the knife is very stiff it has a good amount of up and down. And keep in mind the most extent to its use was cutting PAPER. I have seen the video with The Late Boy Scout completely beating on the knife and have no up and down. I have no idea how this could have happened in less that 2 days from me pretty much doing nothing to it.

Yeah I was wondering if all compression locks have this problem. I had a PM2 before and it got up and down fairly quickly. Again being very disappointed because my brother has a Buck Vantage that he payed under 40 bucks for and that is more solid than a knife I payed 140 bucks for and supposedly is supposed to be better.

Just send it back for an exchange

I've had about 30 at least, in nearly all of the available blade-steels, and EVERY ONE was perfect. Right now, I have one Sprint and I plan to gift that soon to a relative. But there is no better folder, in my estimation. I'm enthralled by the compression lock.

You took it out of the box and messed it up tinkering with it and now you want to blame someone else. Hmmm. You didn't give it time to break in before you messed around with it. If you have any pride, and honesty you would send it in to W&R with a check and ask them to fix what you messed up and charge you for it if necessary. Having a bit of integrity might help you in the long run in life. It will sure lessen the jams you get yourself in as well as make it easier to look in the mirror every day.

Sounds harsh huh? If nobody ever talked to you like this before maybe that's part of your problem.

I have had one before and had the same problem

Amen Mastiff. If he messed with it and can't fix it, he needs to get it fixed at his expense. Your advice to him is sound. A man needs to take ownership of the problems they cause. One wise man said, "It takes more of a man to be a gentleman." There are so few gentlemen these days sadly.

The Spyderco Paramilitary 2 is an excellent knife and very easy to adjust with simple torx drivers. It is designed to last a reasonable person a long, long time.

I'm sorry maybe I wasn't very clear. I broke it in for an entire day and keep in mind I have had a PM2 before. After the first day of constantly breaking it in it was no different from when I got it. I am also not new to knives, to my understanding I thought that the tuf-glide would help the knife and I loosened the pivot a bit and continued to break it in. It then developed blade play. If a knife cannot be adjusted without problems occurring then I would have a problem with it.

And if a knife I payed 140 dollars for develops blade play from oiling and slight adjustments to the pivot, then I do not find that to be a very quality knife.

The paramilitary 2 is a great knife because I had one before before giving it to my friend and I loved it. I just want to find out what went wrong with this one.

I tightened my PM2 all the way down, and it still opens freely. I just don't see how you could be having this issue. I don't think the PM2 can be tightened down to the point where the liners/washers constrict the movement of the blade.

Also, you chipped a DLC coating on the first day? Seriously, that stuff is harder than steel. DLC stands for Diamond Like Coating. What in the world could you have been doing to chip that? :confused:Metal won't even scratch it easily.
