Paramilitary 2 Worth the Hype?

To this day I have never heard anything as hyped up as the PM2. And that extends beyond cutlery.

As far as I can tell though, the only things its got going for it are good ergonomics and a good steel at a reasonable price--definitely not the first knife of that combination. Going further, I've seen batoning and other hard use cases with the PM2 that seem absolutely ludicrous for a 3-inch modified liner-lock FOLDING knife in S30v.

Yeah its a good looking piece but I think there's something I'm missing. What makes the PM2 the EDC-tactical-harduse-last-ditch-survival folder of sex appeal and invincibility that everyone's drooling over? Spyderco must be sprinkling pixie dust on those blades.

Its a great knife. Feels great in the hand, flicks open like butter, great blade shape, FFG. For me the lock is ok, but not my favorite. And I would never baton it or even consider it a "hard use" knife. For me its a slicer. But yeah, very nice knife. Currently its sorta hard to find one, which is increasing the feeding frenzy.

I dig it...

Might not be everyone's cup o' tea, but for the price, it would be very difficult to find a better buy, imo.

I don't know about hard use, tactical folder, but they slice like razors. My blue paras were such aggressive cutters too! Just seemed to dig in and shred whatever needed slicing.

on the contrary it seems like everyones cup of tea... I'm just trying to figure out why.

There are some who don't like it. Not many, granted, but there are a few...

ETA: There's only one way to be sure: pick one up and try it! It's a popular knife, as noted, so it wouldn't be too hard to sell it off if it doesn't work out for you. :)

Its definitely a great knife,& its alot of knife for the money, thats fure sure...

Get one. You'll love it. My favorite is the orange CTS-XHP but my digicam satin S30V is great too.

Hello,

Just about any new knife that comes from any of the big makers has a bunch of hype. Sometimes from the maker and sometimes from the people that are die hearts for that particular brand. What separates hype from reality is how well that knife lives up to it all. The para2 has lived up to the hype and gone well beyond that. Find another knife made in the USA with premium steel for under $100. The ergonomics are as good as any knife Ive tried, it holds an edge very well, the lock can handle more abuse then most other lock designs, its light weight, it looks awesome, and it comes in any color and steel you could want. I dont know what else you can ask for. Now if the base model was in the $200 or $300 range this would all change because you can find other blades in that price range with a lot of the same good qualities. Its a great all around knife, its not magical, it cant save the world or cut threw things like Wolverine's adamantium. Its not my favorite knife, thats the military. I like longer blades. Try one out for yourself, it may just surprise you. If you dont like it you will not have any trouble selling it.

Have a good one,

Chris

At first I was the same way, then I said what the heck and got one. 7 months later, it as been in my pocket everyday since. Even though once I get an 0561 I probably won't carry it as much, I will still love it and carry it every once and a while. Totally worth the $100

I like it; it suits me extremely well overall. For me, it lived up to the hype. Will it be worth it for you? None of us can tell you that.

I think you just need to bite the bullet and get one for yourself to try.

I'm mainly a Kershaw/ZT guy and the PM2 was my first Spyderco. It really is a great knife. I have no idea why but I always equate it with my ZT0350 even though they are almost the exact opposite.

But seriously, can anyone really explain what makes a great knife so great? It is just something you need to experience for yourself and see if you are on board.

Yes it is worth the hype.. I've been wondering the same thing and I got mine in the mail Saturday. Its an all around great knife for the price. Lightweight, slim, sturdy, sharp, great steel, feels great in the hand. This knife is going to replace my Manix 2 and some more expensive knives as my daily carry for the foreseeable future. I couldn't understand what the hype was so I bought one. I definitely don't regret the purchase.

One of the best working knives out there. It's not really that any one aspect of it blows me away, but it's just a solid, competent folder that does just about everything well. The only thing I can really knock it on is the aesthetics and that's an extremely subjective call. It cuts well, pierces well, locks up tight, opens quickly and smoothly, feels good in hand, is big enough I don't feel underknifed, light enough I don't feel overknifed. Really just an all around performer.

I picked one up about a month ago and I must say I love that damn knife . I think the ergo's are perfect. The lock makes it very easy to close one handed. If the s30v holds its edge this good I cant wait to get my hands on the m390 version. Now I need a military. Damn you spyderco!
