ParaMilitary, anyone carry in-pocket, not clipped?

Hi All,

The paramilitary is calling my name, looks like a real sweet EDC, but I have a concern.

I work in an office environment where carrying a knife clipped to my pocket would cause some unrest, so in the pocket is the order of the day for me. The knife must co-exist with my keys and any pocket change I might have on me.

The back of the knife is completely open. I have several knives with open backs that will "collect" coins between the blade and liner which I have to remove when I take the knife out of my pocket to cut something. Kind of annoying. I have also had the keyring get up in there and make a flat spot on the cutting edge (even more annoying).

Anyone carry a paramilitary in-pocket that could tell me if they have the same issue (or not ;) ) with it that I have had with other open-back knives?

Thanks,
Mike

I usually put change in my left pocket and keep the para in my right, and as far as keys go I haven't had any problems with it. The main reason I haven't had any problems is because I keep it clipped to my pocket and the back of the para rest against the seam. If you get one and don't like it I am sure you could resale it pretty easily. Good luck with whatever choice you make

My left pocket has my cellphone (iPhone) and coins would scratch the screen, so coins/knife must coexist for me :(. And unfortunately clipping is not an option since it would create a stir in my office. :grumpy:

You may want to consider an excellent mod from STR. The lowrider clip almost completely conceals the knife. I am thinking about getting one for my new Para D2.

I carry mine with out a clip in right back pocket. I put together a leather lanyard tied like the ones that come on the Sebbies. Just the tip of the leather knot is out the back pocket, so It is easy to get to, but causes no worries to my fellow sheeple.

With or without the low rider clip carry it inside the waistband behind a cell phone holder or something similar.

In pocket with lanyard and no clip..That factory clip is not good.. At least until I add the tip up clip next week..

I never clip a knife to my pocket when going out, this is what I do, it's basically just sewing a slot in my pocket just for a knife.

I would just carry IWB.... well that's not 100% accurate. I spent 5yrw in an office environment... Sometimes I even carried a Strider SA on my belt. People actually said it made them feel SAFER... I try to be curtious, helful and practice an overall honest attitude... I find people see me before they see my knife. Otherwise I DID get a LOT of ignorant people asking "What kind of pager is that" when they saw my Sebenza clip... funny.

Like I said... I'd recommend IWB... It's what I do when I have to dress up anymore. Just place the clip under the belt next to a belt loop. Nobody will even notice.

Yes it has a chance of collecting keys or coins if carried in the same pocket as those items while carried loose. :(

I almost always carry my knives clipped, but there are some exceptions.

Some of my ridiculously shiny knife clips, like my Kershaw G10 Offset, needs to be concealed, so in my suit pants I actually just let it lay tip-up in the coin pocket. So basically, I give the entire pocket to that knife and move everything somewhere else.

I find lanyards help with loose pocket carry. They can make getting the knife easier and finding the orientation easier if you ever need it in a hurry.

Just tell anyone that complains about it to stick it up there ass. Or carry it IWB

Well, I used to be in a postion to do that :). We used to be a small close-knit company, now we've been bought and are a 2 $billion division of a $12billion company with all sorts of policies. And we have a whole crowd of new people that haven't known me for 20 years.

Couple months back, there was a meeting where someone needed to cut something. A coworker pulled out his Leatherman Wave and another coworker exclaimed in a panicked tone "Oh my God! He has a KNIFE!".

All I would need is to be the guy that caused one of these non-knife sheeple to complain to the boss about "he has a deadly weapon in the office" which in turn resulted in a new policy about no knives in the workplace (or being told about an existing one that I don't know about yet).

Such is life in large corporations :barf: :)

Sheesh, scared of a leatherman wave?

That's ridiculous.

Here's a technique you might try. Idiots think that bright colors make things non-lethal.

Particularly pink. Wonderful experiment--try "revealing" a normal delica versus the pink one on separate randomly selected groups of people in a given non-threatening box opening task.

I must be more regimented with my personal effects than most. The whole thought of keeping a knife in the same pocket as my change sends chills down my spine. :)

Just as there's a tool for every job, there's a place for every tool.

BTW, if I carry two knives ( one in the change pocket), the change gets to ride in a small zip lock, or other coin holder depending.

I've gotten to the point that I carry most knives in the pocket, not using the clip. I won't remove the clip as I still have the option of using it when needed. I've found I'm more prone to losing the knife if it's clipped than if it's riding deep in my pocket. Joe

Though I dearly love the para mil I think it would be one of the worst knives to carry loose in pocket even without change and keys. Its got some sharp bits that are hard on clothes and hands even when clipped and the open back and lock will both get clogged with coins and keys. I love the knife, in fact I have one clipped to my casual friday wear right now, but for a discreet carry or in pocket folder for the office there are much better options IMO.
which isn't to say you shouldn't get one cuz you defintely should.

I can guess the results of the experiment...

Pink -- Ooh that's cute, where'd you get it?
Black (normal) -- Eeek! He has a knife!!

:D

Oh, and yes being intimidated by a Leatherman Wave is ridiculous!! :barf:

I'm right there with ya, or I used to be. Used to carry keys/coins in RF, knife in LF. Then 12 years ago I started carrying a Palm Pilot PDA. The thing cost $400 12 years ago and had a very delicate plastic screen. I did a big gulp  and put my EDC in RF with the keys and coins. I hated myself and the knife took some scratches, but I figured the knife could survive some scratches and still be useful however the PDA with a scratched screen becomes very hard to use.

I've thought of a small coin holder, but I am thinking it might make more bulk in my pocket than just the coins. No good answers, I've tried IWB but I don't find it comfortable (belly is too big :) ).
