Paramilitary II

I was skeptical over the knife, as with most hyped things. 3.5 months after I bought my PM2, it's still in my pocket. My only gripe is the S30V. The stuff just doesn't seem to hold an edge. Maybe my expectations are too high, but if they made a PM2 in CPM-M4, it would be one of the last knives I would ever buy (maybe).

The ParaMillie 2 is a great knife. It has everything you'd require from a knife: great ergonomics, quality materials, good fit and finish, easy maintenance and a very strong lock (because the compression lock although it may look like a reversed linerlock, operates on a different principle and it is much, much stronger).
The only thing I'd change would be to replace the regular clip with a wire one but I can live with that. ;)

Thanks for all the feedback. I noticed a few cons about the knife with the compression lock, but thats one of the reasons why I opted for it due to me being left handed, I thought it would be easier to close than a liner lock since most knives are built for right handed people. I know the military offers a left handed model, but I didnt want that big of a knife for this purchase

I had no idea that the s30v steel doesnt hold an edge well like cypress mentioned! I thought this was supposed to be a great steel!

In so many high end knife collections found on youtube you are almost certain to find a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 in there for a reason. The same goes for mine. Its an absolutely outstanding knife and its ergonomics are some of the best you can ask for in a folder.

Very nice group. Which knife is the highest value?

Cypress must be slicing rocks in his spare time. M4 is a very good steel but is mostly made for high speed applications. S30V is considered one of the best as far as overall performance by a number of knife makers. You could argue which is better all day long.

I'm not that impressed with the PM2. IMO, it's the most overrated folder this side of the Sebenza.

I saved up for a Benchmade, then bought the PM2 on an impulse when I saw it in stock. It is an awesome knife! Like others have said, the compression lock is weird, but you'll get used to it.

Mine had no play, and I have never needed to adjust it.

I've bought and sold a lot of knives within the last year...all $100 or more...and the PM2 is the finest folder I've ever handled. Certainly the best for the dollar. The compression lock made me fall in love with it. Right now, I have one PM2, a cheap one in S30V, but I've owned a bunch of them in many good steels. Unfortunately, they get away. GREAT, GREAT KNIFE.

The pivot is not controlled by the tightness of the screw. Mine are tightened up all the way and it's like butter.

What exactly broke? You have two scales, two liners, two washers, and the blade. I gotta call you on this one.
I know, but mine came with the pivot screws loose and the blade was tight, I tryed just messing with the pivot and it wasn't getting better so I started messing with the blade stop screws and when I did that, that is when it started getting better. I was able to get it perfect after that tho :)

I think he was refering to the detent ball.

RemyKaze I don't need you calling me on anything , somthing busted with the lock , its not some magical thing that doesn't bust , and I really didn't find it that impressive before it broke

Because of the way it is made, it does require some tinkering if you're a perfectionist (I am), but I like being able to completely tighten that screw down. Makes me feel at ease. I've really beaten mine up.

When someone says really vague things like "something busted" with such a simple knife, I just have to question it. Seems like you'd be able to tell what exactly broke just by looking at it. I wasn't calling BS, just calling to question what the guy meant. Never heard of the detent ball breaking off before, but there's a first time for everything.

You have to take in account of what PM2 offers for ~$100-115. Price to knife ratio is extremely good.

I'm with you in the Sebenza just because of experience and price, but PM2 is as good as they come.

I've found Spyderco's S30V to be extremely good. The higher RC really helps the edge retention. I don't know what you would be cutting that'll make you say S30V has bad edge retention.

For those of you who received lemons, send it in and get it back. You have to realize that this is a production knife and that not everyone will be perfect. Most are, but not everyone.

Busted the lock? How exactly do you bust the compression lock? How do you break a piece of the liner that wedges between the stop pin and tang? I haven't owned a para in quite some time and the one I did own I beat the snot out of at work and it shrugged it off and begged for more. I'm calling BS unless you have pics.

Honestly, if I wanted a 3.5" folder in S30V, I'd much prefer the Ritter Grip.

OK, twice now you've dissed the PM2 without giving any specific reasons. We get that you're not a fan. To each his own.

The design of the edge of the PM2 is amazing and makes this knife an excellent choice for EDC.
I really like the jimplings on top of the blade, they make precise tasks pretty easy.
I have fun using it sometime even for cooking something simple.

I have less convinced by the design of the handle... That is functional but nothing more.
And it took me sometime to find where I would like to have the clip.
I don't really explain why, but the position of the clip didn't seems to be fine or natural for me...
Finally I get used to it, but it was not as natural for me as for my ZT or BM

Its hard being a perfectionist sometimes (I am too) lol

I remember reading in the Spyderco forum a while ago a few people that had the M390 Para2s had the detent ball fall out.

I just did a quick search and found the link http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1022352-Paramilitary-2-detent-broke

Hehe that would definitely be the Hinderer, particularly because i live in Australia and all flick knives are banned on import. Folding knives often go for 3-6 times the value of what you would pay in America as a reason.

Wow, at 3-6 times, that Hinderer must have cost as much as a used car!

Being a liner lock guy the compression lock feels backwards to me. I can close it one-handed but not as easily as with a liner.

After it breaks in and becomes smoother, you can close the knife by just holding the compression lock in and giving it a small nudge to the left and the blade will either close all the way or most of the way. It's actually probably the easiest knife to close one handed I've handed because of this, better than even the axis lock IMO.
