Went to the Southern California Blades Knife Expo at the Pasadena Convention Center this past Saturday: www.scblades.com

Had a trade show in Anaheim starting Thursday morning, that ended at 1:00 PM Saturday, got checked out of the Disneyland Hotel at 1:30 and was on the road in 10 minutes. Took me almost 90 minutest to go 38 miles. It's been said before, but L.A. traffic sucks eggs!

Parking was somewhat tough at the convention center, for some reason the last two times attending the Knife Expo(2005, this one), there has been a cheerleader tournament. Place is overrun with JonBenet Ramsey lookalikes-absolutely bizarre!

Once parking was squared away, had exactly 2 1/2 hours to "do" the show. The compelling reason that I made the trip was to procure a Harald Moeller Viper II throwing knife. Got one gently used from Bobby Branton last year, and was using it as a letter opener. Sent it to a knifemaker friend to polish, and he lost it. Done a LOT of favors for me over the years, so couldn't beat him up too bad, he feels like crap anyway. Harald HATES making these anymore, so am very fortunate that he agreed to do this one. Mirror polished. www.hmoellerknives.com

After concluding business with Harald, walked the show for a bit. Stopped by Bob Glassman's table, he always has some pretty knives to look at. www.customknifegallery.com

After that, said hi to Dan Favano and Scott Moore. Dan has a site, www.iqknives.com, and Scott is a big dealer/collector of tactical knives, specializing in Al Mar, and Chris Reeve, also has a bit of Strider.

Got to meet Mike Lovett after a fair amount of time, he had a large sampling of the Loveless-Lovett Connection knives, not for sales, but for show and tell. Mike is going to see Loveless later in the week, and is really looking forward to the visit. Louis Chow was a tableholder, and had his usual top quality selection of Loveless knives, and many others. We did some show and tell.

Visited with Mike Vagnino , J.P. Holmes and his lovely wife Karen for a short bit, J.P. is a good friend, and a past holder of a table next to us at the OKCA knife show in Eugene, OR. He has started to make folders, and he is doing a great job. www.jphknives.com

Stopped by and said hello to Jack Alvarez. He is well known to many on the Forums.

Barry Gallagher decided to do this show, for some reason. We sat for a while, and chatted about health problems. Getting old and busted-up really sucks! He had the "Dragonfly" knife on his table that was on the cover of one of the past Blade issues. What an absolutely stunning knife! He said that it took 33 days to complete, and you can totally see that when you handle it. http://www.gallagherknives.com/damascus_folders_frame_set.htm

Barry asked me to check out a new maker's table, Gordon Smith. Gordon is a renowned maker of museum quality glass paperweights, and is branching out into custom knifemaking as a hobby. The knives were nice, but the paperweights that he had were amazing! www.gordonsmithstudios.com

Jerid Johnson was a table holder, and had customers at the table, both times that I stopped by. Blades look excellent, and when he starts moving into fighter guards, will have my rapt attention. Serious up and comer, he had an integral knife on the table that looked very well done. www.jeridjohnson.com

As I was getting ready to leave, I stopped by the RECON1 www.recon-1.com table, and met Sevag Tankian, and his friend Ken, who I had chatted with previously, at an adjoining table. Sevag had a nice table full of Randall Knives, and is the younger brother of System Of A Down lead singer, Serj Tankian. Really, really nice guy, I must have seemed like a freak from another planet, but have been really digging on Hypnotize and Mesmerize lately, and shared that info with him.

On that high note, I split, and spent another 35 minutes in traffic, moving at 15 mph, until passing Anaheim going south.

This is a show that has been attended by some greats in the past, and still is. The crowd was pretty heavy, but reports were that not much spending was done. Bill Ruple sold out in his usual record time, and there were other makers that had nothing to sell on the table when I got there, like Richard Rogers. If you have the ability, I highly recommend making this show at opening on Friday, I will next year!

Thanks for the review.

I have been following Jerid's work for a while now and agree that he is an up-and-comer.

Interesting that you ran into Jack. It has been a long time since I have heard anything related to him. Many people don't like him, but I always got along with Jack just fine.

Jack has been around. He was at the Huntington Beach show, but there was so much else going on that I forgot to mention it.

Jack has always done me right, and he does irritate the crap out of a lot of other people, but, as written elsewhere, if a man does me no wrong, I'm not going to slam him.

Appreciated your review and comments, STeven. Posting the links was thoughtful. Didn't know you were into 'throwing.' Me and my boys got into it after watching Bobby Branton do a demo a few years back at BLADE. I prefer axes to knives for throwing but it's all fun. Harald's set of 3 damascus Vipers in a box looked interesting (SOLD).

Thanks again for posting, STeven

Thanks for the review. I wish I had gone but was feeling very lazy that weekend. :(

Not sure how to comment on that, other than to say that you missed a great show.

The reason for doing these reviews is:

a) to work on "reporting", creative writing, as an exercise.

b) to hopefully write the story well enough, and completely enough that people who missed a previous show will know what to expect to some degree, and will be sure to attend the next show that they are able to.

That's why the hyperlinks are there, this time. I suck at photography, everyone knows it, can't even turn on my wife's digital without help, the links give some visuals for a change.

STeven,

Thanks for sharing....Just came from the Gallagher site....Woo Hoo...Those are works of art.....IF.....IF...I could afford one I'd be happy just spending the rest of my days looking at it......A safe queen in the making...LOL

Nicely engaging and your personal touches always are enjoyable.

I know it takes a bit of time to write a conscise report, and memory has to be quick to recapture what went on. Sometime it all seems a blur.

Easy to read, also. Lot's of paragraph breaks. The internet is less kind to long paragraphs. I'd rather too many than too few.

Thanks!

Great review, Steven

How did Brian Fellhoelter make out? He is doing some cool stuff.

I also know Jack Alvarez, and whatever happened long ago (I have no idea what), I like Jack and think that he is a good guy.

I have sold knives to him and he has always come through 100% and never an issue. All professional.

We were co-judges at the last Blade West Show in Portland and we really had fun doing that. Steve Shackelford was on hand as the tie-breaker, and he only acted once when Jack and I could not agree.

For those of you who do not know how most judging works, all the judges usually have to agree on a knife. When there are 3 judges, like at the Blade Show (Atlanta)- there is no need for a tie-breaker. In Portland, however, Jack and I were the only judges making it necessary for a third to break a tie.

I always look forward seeing Jack at a show. (You too, Steve:thumbup:)

Take care, Neil

Did not see Brian Fellhoelter. The only person that I did not report on that I saw was Wayne Watanabe. Awesome Japanese style work.

It is always good to see Jack, and always good to see you. We are talking about people who are passionate about the craft of the custom blade, and make a living selling them.

How can that not be a good thing?

Great review Steven. Is the Viper just for your collection or do you intend on doing some throwing? I have a few Viper knives plus others by HM. Last year, Harald was inducted into the International Knifethrowers Hall of Fame which was begun by Mike Bainton or Austin Tx, many time world champion. this year if I recall correctly there will be among many other knife throwing events, 7 sanctioned by the IKTHOF in various parts of the country.

For the past few years champion knife throwers have competed at the Blade show but not sure if this is happening in 2007. Bobby Branton may have more info.

There are a number of good sites related to knife throwing including a couple of Yahoo groups where throwers hang their hats and generally have fun together.

Steven, someday get Harald to make you a Frontiersman thrower. I'm sure you would enjoy it.

Murray,

THIS Viper II is for the collection. The other one was for throwing. That one is gone now.

For serious throwing fun, I have 3 Viper Pro throwers, and a Viper III. Always felt that one of the Vipers belonged in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, but that is probably just a dream. At least it sits in MY museum.:D

Never really cared for the Frontiersman. It looks cool, and all, but the symmetry is the thing that is compelling about the Viper, for me.

I did pretty good Neil.

I won best new maker, and the award for Technical Innovation.

I sold all my knives, and had a great weekend.

Keep an eye on Jerid. He is doing exceptionally well.

Gordon Smith, that guys work was just amazing.
Beautifil knives, but those $3000 paper weights were just art on another level.
I stared into one for a good half hour.
